Aussie Politician Approves Facebook Games at Work

An Australian political staffer's official request to play Facebook games while she passes the time on the telephone was approved by her boss, but the Speaker of the House says it's not going to happen.

Caroline Beinke works for Australian politician Bejeweled Blitz [http://www.victordominello.com.au/] on Facebook!

"When I have long conversations on the phone to constituents it is my version of doodling, a mental chewing gum of sorts," she explained. She filed a request for "extended internet access" with the Department of Parliamentary Services, which was approved by her boss, "provided it is acceptable to the Clerk/Speaker."

"My staff work very, very hard, often starting at 7:30 am and working through lunch. So when my staff member simply asked for this request, I said I had no problem with it as long as it was OK with the Speaker," he told the Sydney Morning Herald [http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/games/voters-dull-mp-says-play-games-20110228-1bbs5.html]. "If they are sitting at their desk on hold to a department for 15 minutes, I do not have a problem with it."

Unfortunately for Beinke, Richard Torbay, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said the request is most definitely not acceptable. The paperwork hadn't yet crossed his desk but he was clear that it would not be approved if and when it did. "I have not seen this specific request but I can say this: I put filters in place to stop staff accessing inappropriate websites in the Parliament and I do not think we should be paying people to play games," he said.

It's not a terribly surprising decision, since "paying people to play games" instantly conjures images of government flunkies drawing hefty civil service salaries while sitting in their offices doing almost nothing of value. But as anyone who's ever had to spend long stretches on hold as part of their day-to-day employment, a little bit of stimulating distraction can go a long way toward preserving short-term sanity, and that's better for everyone. Besides, is playing Bejeweled really any worse than any of the countless other ways people invent to screw in time while they're stuck on the phone?

Richard is a fitting name for him, he's a real....

Anyways I'd say it's a fairly rational request, It'd basically be asking if I can twiddle my thumbs while on hold or with someone on the line. (Like she says provided they don't mind her doing so.) If say she need to write something or perhaps pay a bit more attention I assume she would in order to be able to do her job well enough to say employed there.

It's not much better, either. She could probably do just fine with a doodle pad or spot-jogging, maybe head-banging or even simplistic flamenco dancing for her co-workers' entertainment.

...Well, my brain got away from me there.

lol you think that's bad? I've had two different government jobs so far in my life.

In the first one, I was being paid over $11 an hour and worked 8:30 to 4:30. My job was to upgrade the web site, and my boss gave me a reasonable per-day quota to complete because the job had to last all summer... however, I found a really awesome way to complete my entire daily quota in about 15 minutes. After that, I sat back and played Final Fantasy XI on my laptop for the next 7 1/2 hours.

In the second one, again I only had one job and a limited amount of it to do daily. Sure, some days I spent all day working on it, but most of the time I sat around talking to my friend and watching videos on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses and The Escapist.

Government jobs ROCK!

Good news everyone! We've found Atkinson's heir apparent in the Australian government!

Seriously, I have to agree with the staffer and MP Dominiello. What's the harm? And even with the rejection, their just going to find something else. Hell, I spent my time looking at Wikipedia pages and webcomics that made it past the company work filter when I worked at a call center. It's something we do, we like to have something else more enjoyable to do when doing menial tasks, they make them go by quicker. I think the Speaker is overlooking this fact, and I'm pretty sure that anyone working for his office is miserable, and therefore less productive then when they are in a good mood. I know people are going to come with the (games can't help productivity only harm it by distracting), but I know I would rather have happy employees doing average work rather than miserable employees doing good work, but then snapping and quitting in a kangaroo-dung covered rage.

why do you ask permission for something like that?

just play and if they say anything just say "sorry I didn't know it was wrong"

or better still buy your own data plan and play on your personal phone or laptop w/wireless card, then there is no way to get caught

Because her net connection is filtered and she apparently doesn't have access to it.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my response. I should have more clearly stated "what possibly made her think that it was appropriate to ask permission for something like that?" She works for the government and like most large organizations appearance matters over performance. So if she asks for permission to play games she appears to be a person not dedicated to her job, even if her job, like almost everyone elses' who sits at a desk, involves a lot of waiting time.

Instead of doing that she should have just spent some money on an iphone or 3g ipad.

20/20 hindsight I guess

No problem. She can just sneak in a handheld and use that as her "mental chewing gum". Infact, a DS seems perfectly suited for such a task due to the fact that it has a stylus. She can hold the phone with one hand and hold the stylus with the other.

I mean honestly, I've had jobs like that, where you spend 50% of your time on hold waiting for someone to do their damn job so you can do yours, and I'd have gone insane without things to distract me.

I did crossword puzzles in the newspaper, drew obscene images of my boss, played noughts and crosses with myself, or mine sweeper on my desktop, this was long before facebook mind.

Ah, heirarchical systems of administration. How else would I be able to validate my own self-worth and power without publicly enforcing rules with little to no bearing on the success of my organization? I mean, I paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for my education so please cower before my social status.
