Prey 2 Details Reveal a Very Un-Prey-Like Game

A detailed look at Prey 2 reveals that there's not a whole lot of Prey [http://www.amazon.com/Prey-Xbox-360/dp/B000C427NM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300738707&sr=8-1] to be found in the new game, which by all appearances is a sequel in name only.

Bad news for everyone hoping that Prey 2 would pick up where the original game left off, with the intrepid Domasi "Tommy" Towadi plunging through a portal in pursuit of his ultimate destiny. (And if that's a spoiler, hey, the game's been out since 2006. Get over it.) Tommy is out, Native American mysticism is out, the Sphere is out and instead, according to Game Reactor magazine, we'll have an open-world game built on a blend of features and play styles taken from other games.

The new game, as is already known, will feature an escapee from the original Prey story who's now working on a "seedy" planet named Exodus as the galaxy's lone human bounty hunter. That escapee is named Killian Samuels and he's a former sheriff and prison guard who was aboard the jetliner that crashed on the Sphere and subsequently battled his way off of the alien ship. He'll be "as flexible and limber as Faith of Killzone [http://www.amazon.com/Mirrors-Edge-Xbox-360/dp/B00149PCAO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300738784&sr=8-1]-esque cover system" will come into play when he fights. "If the first Prey was the Luke Skywalker version of the story, Prey 2 is Boba Fett's story," a Human Head rep told the magazine.

Gameplay is open-ended, with players able to go where they want and take on various missions set in cities, wilds, deserts and cave levels. "Every area is comparable to Borderlands [http://www.amazon.com/Assassins-Creed-II-Xbox-360/dp/B00269DXCK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300738991&sr=8-1]-like loot system. And although they'll be fewer in number and have "different looks," there will, thankfully, be "vag portals."

All of which leads me to wonder why exactly this is being called Prey 2. I'm not going to shed tears over the absence of Domasi and company but I do have to wonder why, if literally everything from the original game (minus the opening scene) has been excised, it's being developed as a sequel at all. The obvious answer, that it's a cash-in on the name, makes sense only to the point that the name is worth cashing in on, and while I certainly enjoyed Prey I wouldn't consider it a high-value property by any means.

Whatever the reason, Prey 2 is currently in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and is expected to come out sometime in 2012.

This has failure written into its DNA.

Wonder if they're keeping the physics err...upsidedownsideways conveyor-belts? Or the portals for that matter.

I have to say, whilst it's disappointing this won't be a follow up to Prey in a traditional sense, the game sounds really interesting and could shape up to be really good.

Bethesda claim this is the Prey that Human Head wanted to make so I guess we will have to trust them.

Is Killian the security guard off the plane in the live action trailer? I think I read that somewhere?

They get an "A" for ambition, at least. But, I do get the feeling of... failure, too, which is very sad. The original Prey was an interesting experience, coupled with unique game mechanics and an engaging story. Sadly, if it completely loses all of its identity, it just fades into the sea of FPS's that exist today. Basically, a CoD based FPS world.
Well, here's hoping that it turns out decently. That image just does little for the imagination.

You know, this actually sounds pretty darn good. I was totally ready to write off Prey 2, but seeing that it'll put together a combination of Mirror's Edge style platforming with cover-based first-person combat really caught my attention.

That particular combination of gameplay mechanics suggest a game in which the protagonist is relatively fragile, forced to duck and cover or run away from enemy encounters. The whole open world and Borderlands-style equipment upgrade deal is music to my ears, too.

It's not often that you get an announcement for a game that blends all of your favourite mechanics into one package, so I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.

But... the whole native american character was pretty interesting.

I mean yeah, the game sounds cool and all, but the main character sounds so bland its ridiculous.

this isnt my name said:
Free running, with a good open world and a killzone style combat.

You damn ninja.

OT: It doesn't even sound like that it has so much connection to the first game. Though I haven't played the first one. Still sounds interesting enough for me wanting to buy it and try it.

If this is first person, it will be amazing.

I see this whole, "Its nothing like Prey!" as a marketing ploy. Follow me if you will. Bethesda knows how to market... see Skyrim trailer. They also know how to make open world games (Kinda)... see Elder Scrolls. I bet that this guy will be tied to the native american stuff, and they want that to stay under wraps because they want it to come as a surprise to not only the character but the player. You're probably saying, "How can a white guy be related to Indians?" He isn't, but that doesn't mean he can't be tied to their religion. Follow me if you will, He's a bounty hunter right? When in American history were bounty hunters extremely prevalent? Thats right, the wild west, so lets say that he might have had a great great grand-dad who was a bounty hunter, that'd mean that bounty hunting was in his blood. And lets say that this grand-dad was friendly to Native Americans, and they taught him their ways, and when he saw that they weren't just talking out their ass, he started to believe too, intermingling his family with the natives religion... Making this new guy get some of those benefits. Now, I'm just curious how this new guy will understand the alien technology and language, cause in the first, the bird did that shit for you.

It's definitely ambitious and if HH can pull it off, it might really rock the house. I just don't understand why they bothered with the Prey connection since it pretty obviously ain't Prey.

You know, it's bad enough when your average poster drops spoilers without caring, but one of the news staff? Come on man, 2006 isn't exactly ancient history. Good thing I wasn't interested in the game, or I might have raged a bit.

Anyway, I'm not so sure that claiming gameplay mechanics will be essentially a mish-mash of other games. Games like Mass Effect and Borderlands are certainly quality titles, but I don't know if they'd make for a good game if you combined the two.

then again, Quake 2 was the same case that it was only a sequel by name

and we know how awesome the game was and that it was the only one to truly surpass the original one

so I'll be looking forward to this one

I liked Prey, mostly because of the clever use of portals. Though this sounds totally different, and I despise cover based shooters (ESPECIALLY Killzone games, which I found to be incredibly boring), as long as this is still a FPS I'll be interested. I like me some scifi, and a "human bounty hunter surrounded by aliens" plot, while not original, is something I could enjoy.
