Telltale Giving Away Back to the Future Episode 1 For Free

In the spirit of getting you addicted to its product, Telltale is giving away episode one of Back to the Future: The Game, absolutely free.

With the announcement coming on April 1st, the one day a year lying is perfectly acceptable, Telltale's announcement came with an assurance, "This isn't an April's Fool gimmick or prank! And we're not setting an expiration or cut off date for this free game availability!" Well, that's mighty fine of you, Telltale. Care to give us a hint of when the other episodes will become free as well?

"After getting a taste of the first game, players can then get the full 5-game series for just $24.99!" So, your plan really is to get players addicted with a free taste before you charge for any more. Sly, Telltale. Very sly.

Considering the first episode didn't get the greatest reviews [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8495-Review-Back-to-the-Future-The-Game], perhaps this is an attempt to make use of a product that didn't do so well to promote the series that seems to have gotten better with the successive episodes, giving the "meh" stuff away free while charging for the higher-quality content.

The first episode of the adventure game, entitled It's About Time, follows the misadventures of our DeLorian-driving hero Marty McFly. Just as he's getting used to being safe back at home in the 80's, his friend the slightly-mad scientist Doc Brown gets trapped in the past. And wouldn't you know it, Marty has to go save him. Again.

Whether or not it sounds like your drug of choice, the game is free, so it can't hurt to give it a shot. If you've got a PC or Mac, it's available for download over at Telltale's Site [http://www.telltalegames.com/bttf].

Wait, this isn't an April Fool's joke?
Woo!
Not normally my kind of game, but I won't turn up a free legit game. Especially a Back to the Future one.

They offered it for free back in, what, December? Granted, you didn't get access to it for free until like a month after its release (February 25, I think?), but still...kinda old news.

I just got through playing Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People series on the PS3 this morning. I like to wait until all the installments were out before I play anything with an episodic release. I am huge fan of TellTale Games but I am not a fan of waiting on episodes I already paid for months at a time.

Yeah... How exactly is this new when you've been able to get a free copy since Episode 2 was released?

The article is just... Factually inaccurate in this regard.

The first episode had a 'free' code since November 2010 or so... Before it was ever released, or anyone had bothered to review it.

*raises hand* Actually, it got plenty of good reviews. [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/back-to-the-future-the-game---episode-i-its-about-time] They haven't been glowing, but an overall Metacritic score of 72 is far from bad.(Or a whopping 80% on Gamerankings [http://www.gamerankings.com/pc/997882-/index.html]) All you did was link to the review here on the Escapist, which is evidently one of the minority opinions.

Seriously people, give this a shot. The first episode is free, so you have nothing to lose.

Cool I might just give it a try. I think it's a great idea to give away the first episode like a demo, and if people like it they can pay to play. It's a hell of a lot better than a company making all sorts of promises then buying the game for $60 and being terribly dissapointed.

Well, they do this with all their games. Give an episode away for free(usually the first), then charge for the rest.

As for me, I already got it for free by doing that one promotion months back. So yeah.

I already played it for free with that giveaway included in the blu-ray bundle of the movies. It was alright. I'll probably pick up the rest of the series later, when they're all released and on sale.

That are part of this game mostly the story is really good, but then mostly gameplay and mechanics get really destroy this game. I'm all for stylized art, but the aesthetics are a bit off in this game, the environments are awesome when they reference places in the movies, then go way downhill when not.

I was pretty much waiting for this to give the BTTF game a go. But it's low priority on my list since I have a huge backlog and my newer computer that can run it just stopped working :-(
