Western Domain Registered for Final Fantasy Creator's Last Story

The Last Story might be released outside of Japan after all.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's latest project at Mistwalker is a Wii RPG called The Last Story. It no plans [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101990-Trailer-Sakaguchis-Last-Story-a-Wii-RPG-To-Anticipate] to release the game outside of Japan. However, a domain registration may point toward the possibility anyway.

Gaming France noticed that Nintendo of America registered "TheLastStory.com" in early 2010. Visiting the address redirects to the Nintendo website.

Does this mean The Last Story is confirmed for North America or perhaps Europe? Sadly, no. Nintendo has registered domains for Japanese titles in the past that didn't lead to anything.

In this case, the same situation is possible, but unlikely. Nintendo needs titles for the Wii in 2011, with just Final Fantasy [http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Skyward-Sword-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002BSC54I] would be a nice addition to the two titles.

Impressively, Last Story not only looks good but received a 38/40 review score (10/10/9/9) from Japanese magazine Famitsu, so it's been well received in its Japanese release. Localization takes time, but hopefully the process is underway and we'll hear more in the coming months.

Wow, just when I thought Nintendo was pulling a boner by not bringing this over...not that it's confirmed or anything.

Excellent news.

Also, it seems Xenoblade will have a western release as well, so happy days indeed!

Xenoblade and Last Story, yes. I am pleased.

Now, if only I could tear myself away from the PC for long enough to play the near-dozen Wii games I still haven't finished.

38/40 from Famistu? That must be pretty damn good. Might be time to dust off my Wii for something other than Monster Hunter Tri.

It got 38/40 from Famitsu? OF COURSE IT DID! It's not developed in the West! It looks pretty shiny though.

For god sake Square Enix please release it outside of Japan! I've got no future Wii games to look forward to that isn't Conduit 2, Skyward Sword or Mario!

The Last Story is not a game from Square Enix. In fact, they are Square Enix ex-pats. Mistwalker is its own studio and I believe Nintendo actually published the game for them. Xenoblade is in a similar situation; developed by MonolithSoft, now a developer owned by Nintendo instead of Namco, and published by Nintendo, but despite its leanings to appeal towards both Western and Japanese demographics, Nintendo seems to have largely ignored the game despite it being just what the Wii needs to expand its appeal. Hopefully these two games see the light of day outside of Japan, instead of Nintendo neglecting two solid jRPGs just because their sales will likely be mediocre compared to Nintendo's IPs.

Dear Mistwalker: If this isn't better than any recent Square Enix games, I am going to fly over to your headquarters in Japan, buy enough copies of FF XIII and The 3rd Birthday to destroy a building, and launch them out of a catapult at your HQ.

Signed,

-Raziel

Seriously, if this isn't on the level of an Persona game, at the very least, then I will be mad.

Even if it comes here to the US, it won't sell well.

Many who have Wii (mostly casual players) wouldn't be interested, anyone who would be interested has a PS3 or XBox ('Cause they're "real gamers" *herp derp*), and plenty who not only would be interested but also have a Wii probably hate JRPGs (*Insert generic JRPG-hating joke here*). And then even those who fit in this game's demographic just wouldn't know about it or just not buy it.

As someone who owns a Wii, I think this would be great to have. But there is no way this would be a solid business decision.
