Fear 3 Multiplayer: Don't Capture the Flag, F**king Run!

Fear 3's multiplayer is a bit different from what you'd normally expect - including one game type that has you just fleeing for your very life.

Fear 3 (which I refuse to write as F.3.A.R. no matter how much they push that name) has largely slipped under my radar for the most part, but this multiplayer trailer for the Day 1 Studios FPS is somewhat intriguing.

[video=3062]

Specifically, it's interesting because it doesn't hold to conventions found in most other modern FPS titles. There's no territory hold, no Capture the Flag - hell, it doesn't even look like there's a standard "Deathmatch" mode in sight.

Instead, we have modes like "Soul King", where you play a ghostly soul that possesses the bodies of hapless soldiers and has them shoot other soldiers, who are in turn possessed by souls of their own. I guess this is the closest thing to a Deathmatch there is, but it's a neat little twist.

"Contraction" seems like the most standard of all the modes - judging from this trailer, it's a survival campaign like Firefight, Horde Mode or Nazi Zombies, but you get suits of robot power armor here, which could make all the difference.

There's not much information on "Soul Survivor", but it looks like an "Infection" style game, where those who are downed then join the other team until only one person is left standing. But perhaps the most imaginative gameplay type is the aptly named "F**king Run" mode.

Guess what you do in that one? Go on, guess.

If you guessed, "Run from an advancing wall of cloudy death that resembles the Nothing from Neverending Story while shooting enemies in your path," then bingo. Give yourself a cookie.

On the other hand, the gametypes look cool, but something about the actual gameplay itself looks a bit awkward - or perhaps it's that the graphics don't look nearly like what we'd expect from a high-end shooter these days? Oh, and the "creepy girl" isn't very creepy at all.

Fear 3 is out at the end of May.

Fucking Run mode. Brilliant.

Now I suddenly want a RACE mode in my online FPS games. Maybe relay races for team modes.

The multiplayer actually sounds pretty sweet. But I think I'll pass on the game. Unless they don't make the scares "PUSH X TO NOT DIE" quick time events, like F.E.A.R. 2.

Also, how would you spell out the acronym for "F.3.A.R."?

First 3 little piggies Assault Recon?

I see a bunch of people complaining about the graphics, but that shouldn't really matter when you have slide-tackles and giant mech suits.

This game seems to get less and less creepy ¬_¬ Now it's just comical.

To be fair, neither 1 or 2 seemed to be very scary. But the AI and gunplay were excellent in both. And I also enjoyed the environments in the series. Not enough shooters let you fight through office buildings and cubicles. Or elementary schools. A few games use schools, but never to fight basic solider grunts.

I kinda missed checking phone messages, too. Hope F.E.A.R. 3 lets me do that again.

Well yeah, but at least the first tried. And didn't shoe-horn in quick-time events where they didn't belong.

We're missing a lot of context for the creepy girl.

It looks like it's built off the same graphics engine that the previous games were, so we'll see if the gameplay can stand on its own, as opposed to being bumped up by new graphics. I'll bet the PC version could probably get a lot better in quality, but they ran a lower level graphics settings so as not to show how great it could get.

The steel door as a riot shield bit is pretty great though.

Ok, the F##king Run could be a lot of fun as you will end up having to run into a through waves of enimes which will remove the hide and kill them all format we are use to

People make a big deal out of that, despite it not really taking place that often. Yeah...it was out of place. Yeah...it sucked. But you don't hear people complaining about the 2-3 QTEs inserted randomly into Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood likes it a horrific mistake.

To be honest, I preferred it to walking down an unscary corridor of blood every 20 seconds.

That I do. But what he said is also true, and is what I've been saying for a while. Putting quick time events into horror games is stupid and removes any sense of fright. I'm not scared if I can control whether or not the monsters kill me through repetitive button pressing.

Brotherhood wasn't trying to scare you. And FEAR2's QTE's happened enough to annoy the hell out of me.

I am also a ZP watcher.
But mores the point, he's right. And i agree with you. it kinda takes away from the horror aspect when you have to start franticly button mash so you don't get your face ripped off.

Point in case, Dead Space 2. I recently got it and finished it and the start of the game genuinely scared me. OK, not shit my pants and need rehab scary, but still. more shocked then anything i suppose... But the frantic pressing of a button every time one jumped on me kinda annoyed me. And online? it just hurt my arm.

EDIT: didn't know if this one posted, hence the other one further below showing pretty much the same stuff.

Ah, someone else who won't write it that way.

Fucking run mode sounds pretty awesome. I wonder if it's a "Stab other people in the back while you run" or a "work together and you're all graded together on your performance" type deal
