Capcom Announces Bite-Sized Mega Man Legends for 3DS

Before Mega Man Legends 3 hits the 3DS, fans can take a peek into the game's world through the Prototype Version.

Capcom has announced another lead-in to an upcoming game in the vein of Case Zero [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Rising-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002EE5ROO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303420701&sr=8-1]. This time it's for the 3DS's upcoming Mega Man Legends 3 and will come in the form of an eShop download called Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version.

The game's Prototype Version is evidently part of the promise [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108417-Other-Capcom-Brands-Could-Get-the-Case-Zero-Treatment-Says-Exec] that Capcom made to continue with this style of development. The download will be available when the eShop launches on the 3DS, as the virtual storefront is still in Nintendo's garage.

Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version is described as fans' "first taste" of the upcoming open-world, action-adventure game that revives Mega Man Legends [http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Man-Legends-Playstation/dp/B000006OVJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1303420751&sr=1-3] after more than 10 years. Legends differs from the other Mega Man titles by depositing Mega Man into a 3D adventure rather than a 2D platformer.

The Prototype Version will add the leader of a sky biker gang named Barrett to a cast also populated by "risk-taking digger" Mega Man Volnutt and "wonder mechanic" Roll Casket. Players will take on the role of Barrett, who uses a close combat gameplay style and has the potential to get mobbed by Servbots.

Interestingly, Capcom plainly states that Prototype Version will be presented as a work in progress, and will even give players access to unfinished areas of the game once its core missions are complete. In addition, players will gain access to a debug menu to give themselves special moves and abilities.

The partial basis of the release seems to be to help bring fans to Capcom's Dev Room [http://www.capcom-unity.com/devroom/], where it gives them the power to vote on designs of Mega Man Legends 3 characters and certain gameplay aspects such as Easter Eggs. Capcom didn't announce a price for Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version, but I would expect it to come at a minor cost.

Seriously!? The original Legends was one of my very favorite games for the N64, it was unbelievably good! It was probably the first shooter I played that had RPG elements.

Can't. Fucking. Wait.

Finally a bit more to legitimize my 3DS purchase beyond the Zelda remake.

As a fan of the first two Megaman Legends, and most Megaman games in general, I'd like to say how ENRAGED I am that I now have to buy a shitty hand-held if I want to see what the new game is like (Not that the 3DS is shitty, I wouldn't know, I'm just angry.) God knows when I'm going to have the money to drop for a 3DS and a new game.

Ok, I'll admit I never played Legends. It looked to me like the worst to be done to Megaman since Capcom decided to give him a soccer attack. Megaman was going in a good direction with the Megaman X series and Legends looked very lame to me at age 11 when it was originally released in 98.

I realize I'm slightly biased in my pic selection
Gamefaqs puts Legends in General Adventure which is kind of vague. What kind of game was it?

It is basically a third person Megaman with RPG elements and a more open world.
And those pictures are a TERRIBLE representation of the comparison between the two games.

OT: I knew about a Legends 3 for a while, and I'm pretty excited.

We ARE going to play as Megaman, right? They aren't going to make a Zero knockoff and have MM come in at the end of the game, right? Right!?

And no, not as far as we can tell over at the dev room. But they just unveiled the rivals final appearance the other day so it's a logical decision for them to show up the gameplay of him. Like the video itself said, "Introducing", so of course they're going to focus on his gameplay in an introduction video.

I saw the Legends pic at Gamefaqs and couldn't help myself, but it's a good representation of what it looked like to me when I was 11. If I end up getting a 3DS I'll at least consider renting it.

Haha, oh god I just saw this and had to comment. You're comparing artwork with an in-game image, and we're supposed to take that seriously? Really?

Ohhh well. Well to be fair Mega Man Legends WAS obviously intended to be more lighthearted (in general) and yes maybe even slightly kiddish. Does this mean it had a different look and tone than X did? Yes of course. Does that make it a bad game? Not by a longshot.

Omg, Megaman Legends 3?! That game may make me purchase a 3DS. I absolutely LOVED the first two on the PS1. Only Megaman games I ever played, and I loved them.

Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 for the Playstation are 2 of the select few games that I make a point to pick up and play at least once a year. They're kinda kiddish, but I still enjoy playing them. They're a lot of fun, have competent controls, and a certain charm about them that I still enjoy, and I'm turning 20 in just over a month.

Other than the fact that some names are similar, and some of the enemies and pick-ups bear a vague resemblance to their old-school counterparts, these games don't compare much to the original series, or the X series, but they're still a fun addition to the Mega Man library. I just wish 3 wasn't coming out for the 3DS. I've no intention of buying one. I wish it was at least coming out for the Wii, as I already have one of those, and it seems like a more fitting console for it to be released on, at least to me.

I never said it's a bad game, back in 98 I didn't have an internet connection so my opinion was based only on the box art. The main reason I never gave it a chance was because it wasn't a sidescroller I'd come to expect, so I just went with what I knew.

The picture comparison isn't as funny when compared to the actual sprites.

heh, yeah I know, on a side note I wonder what a Megaman World crossover game would be like with Megaman, X, Megaman.exe NetNavi and Megaman ZX.

...Man, why do they keep doing all the bad Mega Man games? I mean Battle Network and Zero were bad (ZX was ok). C'mon Capcom, let's get some Mega Man X!

Despite me loving the Legends series I can't justify spending cash for a system that I just don't like.
