Sony Still Unsure About Credit Card Leak on PSN

Sony still doesn't know whether any credit card numbers or other personal information were stolen in the recent attack on the PlayStation Network, nor does it have any idea when the service will be back.

The recent collapse of the PlayStation Network due to an attack by rebuilt infrastructure [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109514-Sony-Admits-External-Forces-Brought-Down-PSN] will prevent such disasters from occurring again, it has no idea when the job will be finished. The company also acknowledged today that it doesn't know how much private user data was lost in the attack.

Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said the company is conducting a "thorough investigation" into the breakdown but admitted that it does not yet know if any credit card numbers or other personal information were compromised by the attack. Sony will "promptly inform users" if that turns out to be the case, he added.

In the meantime, Sony's Patrick Seybold posted an update [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/25/psn-update/] to the situation this morning to inform PS3 owners that there is currently actually nothing to update. "I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time," he wrote.

"As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly. We'll keep you updated with information as it becomes available," he continued. "We once again thank you for your patience."

This is the only thing that'd concerned me about this whole thing. I've already been hit with identity theft once this year, I don't need it again.

(Side Note: Are some people really using this to revive a dead fanboy war?)

/This.

Also this is really sad. Sony just can't seem to do anything right.
Internal F-up turns into a tear filled "someone attacked us."
I don't doubt that this new PSN structure will be an angry functionality few little thing.

"Promptly"?

This happened a WEEK ago! Are you seriously telling us that you haven't put any effort whatsoever in this entire WEEK to check on your customers' personal data? You know, the financial information of millions of people that they trusted you to keep safe?

I haven't even heard that it might have been compromised until right now. Sony has been hiding this shit, apparently, all week. Anyone with payment into on PSN, watch your cards carefully, maybe you can sue Sony for endangering your funds by not telling you about the leak earlier if you lose anything.

So....In the attack from Anonymous they stole the information from random people all over the world.....yeah they really are trying to help their cause of....not being douches i really have no idea why they do anything.
Anon denied the attack. Now that's not to say that they aren't lying (also it's not really a unified organization so it could just be random anon members), but there's a lot of info that we don't have yet so I don't think we should be jumping to conclusions.

Anonymous itself has claimed they were not responsible for this attack, and yes they could be lying, but they have a history of taking pride in their actions and claiming responsibility for attacks they're behind, so it is likely they are not responsible.

If Anon is responsible, this is one hell of an attack. Seriously, considering their history of minor annoyance level attacks, this is to Anon what 9/11 was to Al-Qaeda (if you'll excuse the reference)

Um... okay, I'm just going to come and and ask it; why the screenshot of William Hurt from A History of Violence?

Sorry, it may just be the bank holiday dulling my senses, but I just don't see the connection there.

It wasn't "Anonymous" people! Where on earth did you get this idea? It's just speculation, they have no damn reason to attack and do something like this, nor would the average person have the skills to do so. This is something much different.

Also, thanks Escapist for not bringing the Anon thing into another article, I was getting tired of the constant "It could be Anonymous because blahblah".

I will be looking forward to the PSN coming back online :)

This is worrying, but it remains to be seen what the attack actually was. Until we have more information, I guess now is a good time to make sure you aren't mysteriously buying cars in Hong Kong.

Wow, this is like Die Hard 4..... Except this situation isn't great fun to watch.
So it's pretty much exactly like Die Hard 4, then?

If they were "unsure" of this they should have told their users fucking immediately so that they could cancel their PSN linked credit cards if they wanted to. Way to potentially give identity thieves a weeks head start Sony!

If I had a credit card on PSN and had my identity stolen over this, I would totally sue Sony for not announcing the potential for stolen financial data earlier.

I don't think it was Anon either, but you can't possibly argue that they have no reason to do this, they did just announce they were going after Sony after all.

But still Motive does not equal proof, I don't think Anon did this.
