John Romero Reveals Details for New Facebook Game

Cloudforest Expedition sounds quite a bit different than a lot of Romero's previous games.

It wasn't too long ago that John Romero revealed he was getting involved in casual games, which threw a lot of gamers for a loop. However, the man behind Doom (<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100748-John-Romero-Apologizes-for-Trying-to-Make-You-His-*****>and Daikatana, though let's not dwell on that) has now revealed information about what his new Facebook game will be like.

The game will be called Cloudforest Expedition and is a joint venture between Romero's Loot Drop studio and RockYou (the latter is funding and publishing the game). The game is apparently going to be an adventure/exploration game that "invites players to become the next great explorer."

At the moment, other details about Cloudforest Expedition are a little sparse. There's going to be a story with the game, though gameplay is based on exploring the game world and clearing areas. Romero has also revealed that Loot Drop will be doing a second game with RockYou, though no information has been revealed about what that title will be.

Unless this game promises to bitchify Facebook, I'm not the slightest bit interested.

Doesn't it strike anyone else as ironic that the best a social network game has to offer is almost exactly the same as going outside?

Creator of Doom turns to facebook gaming? Credibility has departed hastily through the window and nostalgia is now taking potshots with a pump action 12-gauge.

Hair like that has no place in the causal games industry.

That's the only thing I can think of whenever I see that hair. It's pretty disturbing.

Honestly, if it's this item that makes you question John Romero's credibility as a "hardcore" game designer, then you haven't been paying attention for the last 15 years.

No more so than the irony of gamers everywhere on 'hardcore' platforms spending several hours a day playing Guitar Hero or The Sims. Or any of the 'gritty, realistic military shooters' like Call of Duty. Or racing games. Or sports games. You know, all those things that can be done by just going outside and living real life.

And judging by the fantasy-ish title and the explanation that it's about 'exploration' (a vague term, I know), it sounds to me like this is going to be more than just 'going outside.' Sounds alright to me, and could maybe work towards improving social games.
