Behold Tri-Ace's 3DS Ico Look-Alike Beyond the Labyrinth

Our first peep at Tri-Ace's Beyond the Labyrinth makes it look like a handheld Ico.

Tri-Ace recently announced a duo of upcoming games for handheld systems coming to Japan: Frontier Gate for the PSP and Beyond the Labyrinth for the 3DS. Frontier Gate sounds like Tri-Ace's take on a Wizardry [http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Hunter-Tri-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B002BRYXOO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1304281027&sr=8-2] fans are used to.

From its first screenshots, Beyond the Labyrinth looks more like Ico [http://www.amazon.com/ICO-Shadow-Colossus-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B002I0J5FG/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1304281358&sr=1-1]. Tri-Ace described the game to Famitsu as a 3D dungeon RPG that'll feature dungeon exploration.

While players may be crawling around, the situation with combat hasn't been revealed yet. The only character we know of so far is a young girl that Beyond the Labyrinth's story will center on, but she may not even be the main character. Very confusing. If she's to be fighting skeletons or shadow beasts, I hope she has magical powers or at least a knife stashed somewhere in that sun dress.

The world is intentionally being made bright, which might get Diablo fans all hot and bothered, but is totally fine for a JRPG. It's only 60% complete, so expect to see more on it in the coming months. If it's good, I'm sure Beyond the Labyrinth will make its way out of Japan, especially if it has the Ico vibe.

Slightly off topic but I think we can all agree that SotC on a 3D console would be fucking unbelievable. Though assuming this game has giant beasts too, it wouldn't be so bad on the 3DS.

"OMG WTF IS THIS. I can SEE THE SUN. Might has well have MY LITTLE PONY AND HELLO KITTY all over everything! Dungeons are supposed to be DARK and BLOODY and DARK and GORY and DARK."

I want to release a game that only displays a black screen and lots of weird sound effects for these people. "OMG this game is SO HARDCORE. Did I die? Did I kill something? Did I fart? WHO CARES THIS IS SO DARK IT'S HARDCORE."

Anyway, I'm sure that the girl in the sundress has magical powers or a pocket monster to protect her! After all, it's a JRPG. Joking aside, though, it does look impressive, and I'm sure people who love exploring (like me) will be interested.

EDIT:

Will David Bowie be in it?
...do we really want to see David Bowie's Crotch Bulge in 3D?

I don't think aping such a beautiful game as Ico is all that bad, its a lot better than getting your ideas from FPS Military shooters like COD and Medal of Honour, could be good, and a sleeper that makes the 3DS a bit more attractive to me, the launch window for it still has nothing that does it for me except Ocarina of Time and that's still not enough to warrant buying the system yet.

I love it how everyone is optimistic about this game, from a company that hasn't published anything decent in while, and the only thing which brought them to attention recently was their so called "Tech Demo" which has white papers at best on how they did stuff...

Yes, ICO was a good game, but a game is only good as the company which makes it...

I havent played a Tri-Ace games since Infinite Undiscovery, though I used to be a huge fan. But, what the hell, might give this a try unless it gets terrible reviews.

I think they should drop the RPG elements (which will probably be a bunch of stupid fights, anyway) and add Bowie instead.

Mr. Goldman, if in the future, you could refrain from posting info and screens of great looking games which WE HAVE NO IDEA IF THEY WILL EVER BE TRANSLATED AND PORTED TO OUR HALF OF THE WORLD, that'd just be super.

On a completely different topic: We should have more games that try and copy Ico's style. I'd like to have so many of them that I get sick of the copycats like some other franchises.

Can I have a bigger image of that last one? (It looked like concept art, but the architecture in it looked amazing!

Cheers, I knew they were HD but I didn't think they'd support 3D. Oh well, now's a good time to buy a PS3, Sony could use the cash.

Damn, that looks impressive.
Now if only the game could come out sometime in the next two years, so my 3DS could quit gathering dust.

The correct answer is, Who wouldn't want to see David Bowie's Crotch Bulge in 3D?

OT: I almost think Team Ico should call Plagiarism, but then again, it only looks like Ico, as long as it isn't Ico, I guess getting knickers in a twist would be a very silly thing to do.
