Westin Phipps, a mission giver in the superhero MMO City of Villains

Most of the NPCs you worked for in City of Villains were gangster, mad scientists, evil spirits, sentient televison sets... Westin Phipps was an unassuming man who looked like an accountant and whose job - his actual job - was to crush what little hope the already oppressed and hopeless had... and he'd get YOU to do it for him.

This was years before City of Heroes/Villains had its moral choice system in place, but regardless of that it wasn't unusual for players to intentionally fail some of Phipps' missions. Even Evil Has Standards, as tvtropes has it, and Phipps was so loathesome players would let targets escape and timers run out rather than put up with his congratulations for a job well done.

Brilliant missions though. The writing was so good Phipps could really get under your skin. Hateable fur sure, but very very memorable too.

The correct answer is Alyx Vance.
Gordon! Gordon you forgot to put Alyx Vance on the list Gordon! Gordon I'm going to run ahead and get myself killed while you're smashing crates Gordon! Gordon, when I die it's Game Over for you as well Gordon! Gordon, Zombines Gordon! Gordon, you have to spend a chunk of Episode 2 saving me from my much-deserved death Gordon! Gordon, I've got the hots for you, even though you're a personality-deficient pair of disembodied hands Gordon. Gordon, I've got the hots for you despite the fact that you're twice my age physically, and four times my age chronologically Gordon!

My favorite quest giver in that area was the TV. TV demands death to books and videogames!

Omochao from Sonic Adventure 2. This ************ appearing with his "helpful advice" on bosses made me shout far more than any of the boss fights ever did.

How did Diana Allers not make this list? Granted I didn't really mind her and her bulldog face, but there was a vocal backlash to her.

And Claptrap?! CLAPTRAP! He's like Navi, except he makes borderline War-Crime level bad jokes.

I clicked on this list thinking "Surely this is an easy enough category that there couldn't be any glaring mistakes or character's that have been left out...right?"

But lo' and behold: you went with the bird from OoT rather than the obvious choice of Navi.

HEY!
HEY!
LOOK!

HEY!
HEY!

Yeah, I'll take an exposition-spouting bird with an upside-down face any day over a little glowing dot that may or may not actually just be a hallucination Link is having brought on by a deep-seeded psychosis screaming in his - and thus the player's - ear every five seconds.

List fail, yet again.

Except the last one... cause I haven't played that yet. Bet I'll hate his guts though!

I have "Hey! Listen! Hey! Listen!" as my phone's alarm tone btw.

How about the radio announcer from Tropico 3?

A guy so annoying they released an DLC containing an edict to kill him.

Eight characters doesn't even come close to covering everything. But why the Owl thing instead of Navi?

Also, Snow. The best part of Final Fantasy 13 was seeing Lightning punch him in the face for being a fucking idiot.

You stay the hell away from my musical owl! Yes, it may have boundary issues. Yes, it may be a bit of a repetitive cuntburger, and yes...It may be obsessed with parodying that scene from the exorcist. But it is a wise musical owl, for sage's sake! Must i be the only musical owl lover here? It can't be that rare a trait, can it?

Anymoo toowoottwoooo, i notice there is no Lenny from The Walking Dead here. Why is this? He was particularly high maintenance, to put it lightly.

Edit: In fallout 4, everytime i return to the main settlement, there are at least two people (who's name's have escaped me currently) that repeat the same guilt-trippin' line about me letting Granny-skags die from her druggles. Let it go, for crying out loud! She asked for it, quite literally. What else was i supposed to do? She gave me experience points and...errr, something else i can't quite remember, for hooking her up. I rebuilt their whole damn settlement! I placed a goddamn freaking frankenstein monster machine teleporter there too! Also Preston Garvey, because balance was needed and like fuck was he hanging with me through my travels. Maybe i should just drop a fat-man on that settlement and start anew...

Thing about Diana Allers is you could tell her to shove her head up her backside the first time you met her, even if you let her on board you could still tell her to shove her head up her backside at any time after, upon which she would never appear again.

On a more serious note.

No hating on Ashley, that's just not cricket.

1) All of Ashley's escort sections had places to hide her in, once hidden she was invincible and you were free to room clear at your leisure.
2) Once you're playing as her Ashley is a door slammin' suplexin' zombie head explodin' machine. If you don't know what I'm talking about then YOU ARE PLAYING THE GAME WRONG.

You cannot hate someone who suplexes the undead back into their graves, it is simply not allowed under the fundamental constants of the universe. It might also be considered a war crime by the United Nations.

I vote you replace her in this list with Emma 'I can't swim,' Emmerich from MGS2, her entire arc is to be terrified of water, walk over a rickety bridge and get stabbed to death by an overly camp vampire. Ashley would have suplexed that long haired buffoon back into the sea, minus his head.

Come to think of it, MGS2 had some really, really unlikable characters.

Alas, poor Preston Garvey.

Uhmmmmm He wasn't on the list but I REALLY hated Larry from TTG's The Walking Dead. I didn't find any redeeming qualities in his character. At all. He was a loud old man with a bratty daughter and he was all about "me me me". Fine, see if I give a crap what you shovel into your fat bastard mouth.

Also I find myself hating any character that talks smack to my MAIN CHARACTER, like that time Jack from ME II was like "Oh yeah I could take over this stupid ship if I wanted to" and I wanted to shove my sniper rifle so far down her throat my scope could see the cells that made up her small intestine. I hate characters that talk smack like I'm not the main character in a game. i.e. Calo Nord.

ALSO also that "perfect specimen" or whatever from Dead Space 2 that won't die no matter what you do and it's bullshit and I hate that fucker so much

I guess I am in the minority of people who actually like Raiden.

A few of my most hated video game characters are:
Manfred von Karma from the Ace Attorney series
Bill Hawks from Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Count Vegan from Jak 3
Dr. Weil from the Megaman Zero series

No mention of Rosh Fucking Penin from Jedi Academy? That whiny **** made prequel Anakin look like a pillar of maturity. Even his stupid fucking face screamed "punch me."

I will give credit where it's due, though; choosing the dark side path in a Star Wars game has never been easier thanks to him. I leaped at the opportunity to skewer him like the galaxy's most annoying shish kebab.

Because with Navi you can speed through what's being said. With Kaepora Gabora if you try that without paying strict attention you can get caught in a loop.

It really depends on when you played the game. For the first year or two after MGS2 came out people hated him, but then over time as we realized what the game was even about we realized it was in its own way brilliant, and even MGS4 retconning a lot of the story didn't manage to take away from that.

Raiden was meant to keep you from playing Snake. He was supposed be the antithesis of him. That tied into the entire point of the game.

What about Rinoa from FF8. I couldn't stand the girl. So much so that i refused to have her in my party if i wasn't obligated to. She annoyed the hell out of me.

Sheiva from RE5 deserves a mention also. Man that AI was bad.
