If I were VLC I'd be both pissed to have my player made a target for so many spy vectors and honored that VLC is so widely used.
Mostly pissed though..

Why the hate? The Central Intelligence Agency is using the electronic tools which they have developed to help protect the American people from potential threats. Spies exist. Terrorists exist. Does it not make sense to use every available option to try to identify and thwart actions which are perceived as threats to the American people? It's cool when Batman steals information off of Lex's computer mainframe. Why not the CIA?

It's sad really that I am more concerned about their malware artificially slowing down my computer than I am about them reading any personal information that they could glean from my PC. Stay out of my VLC CIA!

Sure, so we'll then assume that everyone is a spy and/or a terrorist. Sorry I don't want the CIA spying on me and as such they can fuck right off.

Because privacy rights and due process. Innocent unless proven guilty and if they want to collect information from someone, they can get a goddamn warrant.

I'm going to poke this bear just a little, realizing full well that the posts quoted below came in a little hot. No anger here. So, take the following with a grain of salt (or just dismiss entirely).

You're in Canada? Yeah. The CIA may actually be watching you right now because of your post. Kidding. Kidding. I kid.

The CIA only has jurisdiction in foreign affairs. They can investigate inside the US only if locals are suspected of being in league with international threats. They aren't going to get a warrant from a foreign country to spy on folks. They're legit friggin' spies! There ain't no rules except "don't get caught". The CIA is in no way a law enforcement agency. They just collect information and pass it on to other folks like the President, Congress, or the Military.

Follow up question: Is Batman a colossal prick who should "fuck right off" or "get a goddamned warrant" for stealing Justice League member info off of Lex's mainframe in Batman v. Superman?

...because it was kinda cool when he did it and the Justice League movie teasers look pretty good ATM. I know I'm playing devil's advocate here. And I apologize for sounding kinda dickish by asking this question. But it's the same crazy crap that the CIA does. They spy on a lot of people (some good, some bad) to try to stop the bad ones from doing bad things. That's their job. It isn't like thousands of people come to work every day for the CIA to capture pictures of nice people in their underwear on their Samsung Smart TV sets.

Well, to me, since I don't live in America, they are the threat and the evil foreign spies.

Didn't the Obama administration pass a directive that meant that zero days and vulnerabilities would be passed to their tech companies instead of exploited? Because I remember that being a thing in the time after Snowden and the other stuff that came out.
