Activision: Engaging With Fans Turned MW3 Leak Into a Triumph

The publisher wanted to make sure that if anyone was telling Call of Duty fans about Modern Warfare 3, it was Activision.

Thanks to the recent leak [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110018-Modern-Warfare-3-Blows-Up-Brooklyn-London-and-Mogadishu], the cat is out of the bag on the next Call of Duty much earlier than Activision originally planned. But Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg says that rather than view the leak as a bad thing, the publisher made the leak its own, and managed to harness a lot of excitement.

Hirshberg said he obviously hadn't wanted for all of Activision's carefully laid plans to get messed up, but he knew that complaining about it wasn't going to make it better. "It would be really easy to just obsess over [the leak]," he said, "And obsess over how it happened, [but] that's only looking backwards. And in the meantime, your launch just started."

He said that no one was immune to leaks - not even the government or military - and that being able to roll with the punches was an important part of marketing in the modern age. Hirshberg said that Activision had tried to look at the leak from a fan's perspective, saying that the fans hadn't done anything wrong. "We woke up with a marketing crisis and wanted to go to bed with a marketing win," Hirshberg explained. "So what we did was we kind of took that exact conversation we were having in our conference room outside and had it publicly in social media ... We reached out to our fans and we said, 'Look, we didn't schedule this. This wasn't something we had planned. But everyone seems excited, so we're just going to roll with it. '"

Activision then released a quartet of teaser videos [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110049-Four-Modern-Warfare-3-Teasers-Invade-the-World], which Hirshberg says generated millions of views on YouTube alone in just a few days. By way of comparison, he said that the first teaser clips for Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops, which were released according to Activision's schedule, received 61,000 and 89,000 views, respectively. He qualified that by saying that Activision hadn't done anything wrong with the launches of the previous two Call of Duty games, but that it showed how effective seizing the moment could be. "What you're pointing to is the power of response in these moments," he said. "And responding is different than reacting or overreacting, or not reacting. Showing a willingness to be a part of the connected, digital, social universe we live in as a company is very powerful."

"We kept coming back to the fans, to the people who love this game; who are just waiting; for whom that day was just a really cool day," Hirshberg added. "All that interest for us we knew was harnessable in a positive way. The other thing we wanted to do was, if there's gonna be a dialogue about our game, we want it to be between us and our fans and not between the leakers and our fans."

It's pretty obvious that Activision made the right decision following the leak by being flexible and engaging with fans, rather than doggedly sticking to its schedule, no matter what. What's more, moving quickly to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the game has seemingly only served to intensify it, as the numbers would attest. Hopefully, this will also mark the start of a more open Activision, something that others at the publisher [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109590-Activision-Hate-Understandable-But-Unfair-Says-Social-Media-Guru] have said is important to it shaking off its "evil empire" image.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 comes out for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 on November 8th.

This is actually a pretty good move on behalf of both the Call of Duty guys and Activision. This seems... backwards. Is it opposite day?

Whatever. This is surprisingly good news, and maybe I shouldn't doubt Infinity Ward as much as I am. Call of Duty 4 was amazing, after all. Perhaps this will be a return to form...!

It's a trap!

But seriously... well played, Activision. Did you lock Bobby up in the board room or something?

If you try sticking to a schedule thats already blown, you lose all credibility. Smooth!
Actually looking forward to the game, as long as it balances Americans/Rest of the world evenly. I think what made MW great was that you didn't spend the whole time as a US soldier. A bit of originality is always nice.

I still question the wisdom of releasing "teasers" for something that has been revealed in it's entirety.

Yeah cause no other Call of Duty ever did that.

MW3 is going to have to do something special for me to care about it. Especially compared to Battlefield 3.

However this was a good move by Activision for a change. Quickly followed up by charging for multiplayer in MW3 most likely :p

Yes, I especially loved the parts where we infiltrated the Russian army. That part is always very understated. It deserves more credit! :p

I'd bang my head against the wall in disgust that people keep buying into the same game that gets released every single year but I think it would only be detrimental to me.

The next video game crash can't happen fast enough. >_<

You know, you haven't even heard anything about this game yet, sure the leak gives some info but not all. Honestly COD has changed, playing COD4 compared to MW2 does feel different and with the addition of Kill Streaks changed the whole pacing. So honestly only two CODs (MW2 and BLOPS) have actually been similar enough.

Also why do you have a problem with it? I mean honestly, if people are having fun still with the series, is that honestly a bad thing? I get sick when people say they don't understand why people keep buying it, its because of FUN, and that should be all that matters.

If the Call of Duty games were bad, I would agree with you.

But you don't get a billion dollar worth of sales for nothing.

My problem is that the series is choking the industry and flooding the market with "CoD-clones." The very same thing happened in the early 1980s which caused the video game crash; the market was flooded with cheap clones and knockoffs and the industry was nearly crippled by it.

Exactly. If I bought a game and I felt burned by it I wouldn't buy the sequel. I've thoroughly enjoyed every CoD game I own and I'll be buying MW3. (And BF3, what is with these people insisting on one or the other? They both look awesome.)

Not its fault, honestly it isn't. All COD clones are because of other people.

It's like:

If a kid in school began to make a card game and it got popular. Then other kids in attempt to get popular made there own card games. Then everyone began to blame the original kid when it wasn't there fault.

:p

Because what follows is even more derivative crap where other studios think their audience is being stolen. It affects everything from game mechanics to how often they're released.

It also rather lowers people's standards ("CoD has good writing!").

You've seen how much the Transformer films make, haven't you?

They've done that since the first one.
