L.A. Noire Breaks UK Chart Record

The ambitious, investigation-focused L.A. Noire is now the UK's fastest selling original franchise of all time.

Over the course of the week (ending May 21), Team Bondi's debut shot up the UK charts to the number one spot, according to [a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1094&s=1111"] Chart-Track[/a]. It beat out The Witcher 2, also released on May 17, and previously established contenders Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and Brink.

Despite the PS3 version offering the convenience of a single disc - as opposed to three Xbox discs - and an exclusive mission ("Consul's Car Traffic Case"), more than half of the copies sold were for Xbox 360. Kind of ironic, considering the game was once [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98117-L-A-Noire-No-Longer-a-PS3-Exclusive"]a PS3 exclusive[/a]. Part of this could be attributed to the PlayStation Network being down, but, even then, Rockstar titles have a history of selling best on Xbox 360.

While Australian developer Team Bondi is just getting started with the release of L.A. Noire, part of the team previously worked on the London-based The Getaway series while at Sony subsidiary Team SOHO. The two PS2 entries in the series did fairly well in the UK, despite remaining relatively obscure elsewhere. This along with the UK's history with film noir (The Third Man, for example) could be part of why the game sold so well.

Until the game's release, only the few who played Rockstar's latest knew exactly what they were in for. Most of us, myself included, relied on Rockstar's [a href="http://youtu.be/GRwnJ0EX9Ko"]slick trailers[/a] and made assumptions on the game's quality and content based on Rockstar's high pedigree.

It was unclear from the trailers whether L.A. Noire would be a fast-paced, action game in-line with previous Rockstar titles or a slow burn, adventure game. As misleading as some of the advertisements and trailers for the game may have been, it seems to have paid off with record-breaking sales and positive reviews. Speaking of which, look forward to ours tomorrow.

Good. It's a great game and deserves all the praise it's getting. Hopefully a sequal will iron out the kinks in the vehicle sections and maybe polish up the shooting mechanics as well.

If only all games were this ambitious, then we wouldn't have such a flood of spin-offs and "meh" games.

Congrats to the entire L.A. Noire team. You guys and gals did a great job with this game.

Ugh, the vehicle sections. At least they were forgiving. (I crashed about four separate times and had to switch cars once during one chase, and still managed to catch the guy)

The shooting mechanics definitely need work, though. The cover system was annoying enough that I never bothered to use it..and you really didn't need to. Every firefight was basically me running through the building popping off headshots all over the place.

It's a great game, but monotony is slowly setting in. Especially since the "homocide" chapter was such a Goddamn drag.

Finally, a game that is getting a ton of praise and deserves every ounce that it's getting. Here's a big thumbs up to Rockstar and Team Bondi, because now we'll probably get more games like this. Hopefully we're over the Call of Duty bubble and games like LA Noire and Heavy Rain will become more popular.

If it only had been released for the PC, imagine how much more money they would make.

Very good game. Played a lot of it today and only thing I can be annoyed at are the framerate problems... And the lack of connection to the main character.

VERY VERY MINOR SPOILERS BELOW.

Seriously, it's like Rockstar does not want us to care for the guy at all. It's like on the second disc we find out that "Hey by the way I'm married and have children" in a matter of banter talk while driving... And than it's never mentioned again... At least for how far I'm playing the thing.

You see Cole's wife near the beginning of the game. She gives him a goodbye hug as he leaves for work...but his wife and two daughters do become important later on. Just give it some time.

Glad to see opening day wasn't a total cop-out
I'm going to kill, and then use my powers as a physician to bring you back to life.

Then I'm going to kill you again.
You must not be a very good doctor, cuz you sure don't have a lot of patients =P
Ok. That was a good one, I must admit.

Well, praise the lord for my work experience at Rockstar! I still need to buy the game though, but I am kind of skint at the moment. Still, I am super proud that I got to play it this time last year.

"more than half" is terribly useless and misleading when you're talking about two options. If the 360 sold 11 copies and the PS3 sold 10 it would be "more than half"

As it is, it's a 58%, 42% split, so ther was 8% in it, which is significant. But usefully so
