Codemasters Admits Weekend Hack Attack

U.K.-based Codemasters [http://www.codemasters.com/] has become the latest game company to feel the wrath of the hacker, but it doesn't appear that any real damage was done in the attack.

Codemasters, best known as the publisher of the GamesIndustry [http://www.amazon.com/Operation-Flashpoint-Red-River-Pc/dp/B004PFS9TU/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1306423986&sr=8-6] that hackers were able to breach its security on May 20 and gain access to user data, which was then posted online. Fortunately, the stolen data was all encrypted and Codemasters was able to get on top of things quickly to ensure the situation didn't get out of hand.

"We responded swiftly with a full investigation to isolate the issue, bringing down Codemasters.com for a few hours to ensure no access would be possible, and returned the website after a security hole was closed," the company said. "While some staff admin names were obtained, passwords were all encrypted."

"Our online team take security of user data very seriously and we are reviewing all of our websites and systems to ensure we are as safe as possible, especially as many games companies have been popular targets for this sort of activity recently," it added.

Props to Codemasters for slamming the door in a hurry but this attack clearly wasn't as serious as the one that brought down the PlayStation Network in April or even the defacement and user data theft that the Eidos and Deus Ex sites Sony BMG Greece [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110011-Anonymous-Hacks-Eidos-Deus-Ex-Websites-UPDATED], described as a hack that didn't require any particular skill to pull off. So what's the deal here: has hacking game companies become the internet equivalent of cow tipping?

So hackers are just being jerks now it seems. I don't think its the same people doing all this but hopefully soon if it is the same people that they get nailed to the wall.

What did Codemasters do to warrant this? The whole Sony thing kicked off over Linux and Geohot, and while I don't approve I could at least see that they had a reason. With this and the Deus Ex site, it just seems like people being a pain on purpose. I'm dying for them to slip up.

They just have better security than Sony, evidenced by the fact that user data was encrypted rather than stored in fucking plaintext like on Sony's servers

This is all getting retarded now.

Surely all these internet geeks cant have that much spare time between beating off to linux and scouring the internet for signs of Morpheus.

Since when have people needed a reason to be an arsehole?

hey, they told us that the data was taken...in a week...like another company...well...atleast they weren't in the 43% that report the hack in a month/never (laughs at the fact that 43% is totally arbitrary and made up, remembering a certain show)

So is this still in the category of "Funny"? Or was that only the PSN attack?

I think something is going on in the underground world of internet and it should be dealt with. I think this is no longer fight over customers rights...

Could this be a misdirection tactic? I thought that the Geohot lawsuit and the PSN attack timing was far too coincidental.

Eh, once the cool kids start doing, everyone else wants to join in. Nothing too surprising.

If I had to guess I'd say the hacker was after staff admin privileges on some of their games.

But that is just a guess, I can't see any other reason for this.

It's SUPER EFFECTIVE!
You, sir, just made my day a bit less painful.

OT: This video-game-related hacking is getting ridiculous. Someone needs to kick these hackers' asses and teach them a lesson!

Holy shit, I'll be right back.
