New Zelda Ad Stars Robin Williams and his Daughter Zelda

Even if you're a famous actor with a magnificent beard, you can still name your daughter after a videogame character.

Actor Robin Williams has been a Legend of Zelda fan since 1987 - in fact, he was enough of a fan to name his daughter after the series' titular princess when she was born in 1989. The commercial you see here, for Nintendo's 3DS remake of the legendary Ocarina of Time, is all about that name.

In it, Robin fondly reminisces about the day he met his daughter Zelda, and how he grew to become a hero and to save her kingdom from the forces of evil. That doesn't sound much like Zelda's actual life story, of course.

In all seriousness, while this sort of commercial could have come off as campy and trite, it actually manages to come off as genuinely sweet and cute. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Robin Williams is rocking one of the most impressive beards I have seen on anyone in a very long time.

Of course, it's not like Nintendo really needs to try to convince people to pick up Ocarina of Time. That game sells itself.

Update: Nintendo has released a longer video with interviews with both father and daughter on the origin of the name Zelda, and the fond memories both have with the franchise.

(Thanks, Alai!)

Robin Williams always has been an awesome man. I love him to bits. A true gamer, and he's not afraid to show it.

That... was actually really good. A bit cheesy, perhaps, but it didn't feel forced. For some reason, the little name things reminded me of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World... maybe it was the zelda music.

I remember him saying that he named his daughter Zelda in a stand-up show.

1) That was a nice ad.

2) That beard is bloody incredible

3) *Censored*

I enjoyed that, and hope Robbie never shaves ever again. He looks like a dear old granddad sitting by the fire, reading stories to his grandchildren...

If you'll excuse me, I think I'm sweating through my eyeballs again...

I love how genuine and wistful his narration is. He's the Morgan Freeman of bedtime stories.

This is the cutest advertisement I have ever seen. It is also my new favorite ad.

Thank you for this, I wouldn't have seen this otherwise.

He named his daughter Zelda?
Right...

Other than that, pretty good ad. Nice and personal which is what Nintendo likes to portray themselves as.

I reckon everyone should be named after a video game character. It should be a law.

And that beard truly is magnificent.

That's an awesome and sweet advert. Wow I did not know that he had a daughter named Zelda and even more the he is a big fan of the game to name his daughter after the Princess. So would that make him the King of Hyrule?

Since when did he have that massive fucking beard?
If I can, I'm getting this game just for the beardliness.

That was actually really sweet, and that beard is officially the coolest thing I've seen all day.
By the way, why do so many people hate Robin Williams? Sure he was in some bad movies, but he's still a really good actor.
