Will Wright Wants to Expand Spore

Spore is going to see "broader" expansions than The Sims, and Will Wright will increasingly look to players to develop game content in future titles.

Amid digital right management controversy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/86246], publisher Electronic Arts is looking into milking its latest Maxis insta-classic Spore into a virtual printing press for money.

Will Wright, the lead mind behind EA's Spore, already has plans for how he will "horizontally" add onto the game and expand its reach beyond people who purchased another Wright classic, The Sims.

Wright says, "I think with Spore we have a lot of opportunities that are broader where we can create other games around the editors, for instance, or take certain levels in the game and put them on other platforms. With Spore we'll be looking at a wider range of expansion possibilities than The Sims. A lot of these may not even be things for people who didn't buy the PC game, like downloading the creature creator."

Not content to just earn a profit from its games, the company expects to develop future games where the user plays an increasingly crucial role in how the gameplay is developed, a trend that Wright has followed from SimCity, where players managed their own metropolis, to Spore, where the entire universe is under his or her command.

"Well, I can see things going in that direction. It would depend on a lot of advances being made. I've been keeping up with advances exactly in that area in the last 20 years. I'm pretty aware of what can be done and can't be done in that area. It would be a cool path to go down," explained Wright on the topic of user-created content. "Programming was one of those things where either you give them a complete machine and they can do a lot of stuff or you really dumb it down, in which case, all the stuff looks the same. It's something I would love to do if we could think of a good way to do it. I spent a lot of time studying people's attempts to do this, primarily people in the educational community like ... Ken Perlin, who has a project in that direction right now. But that's something that's a lot harder than it sounds."

The technical challenges, Wright says, start showing themselves when players are working in a "parametric" environment (within boundaries of the game's engine), as opposed to the more complex yet largely unexplored "algorithmic" gameplay.

"Parametric means you're changing weights and variables around an existing behavior engine. When you program the Sim's personality and then they go off and behave differently because of the way you set the personality modifiers, that's parametric. That's different of getting down to the fundamental algorithmic level where you have branching and levels," says Wright in an attempt to address the programming challenges presented in such games.

He's a man who that talks a lot gaming shop due to his aggressive approach to game design. His next ideas aren't ready to be revealed, but promise to be "pretty grandiose."

I think that "a" is erroneous.

Anyway, it'd be nice to see Spore expanded a little bit. He should work on better eco-systems/behaviors in the creature stage!

Expansions would be good in they could flesh out some of the stages a bit more and include some of the stuff that was promised. But in the end it still seems like they are trying to milk it as the game shouldn't need expansions because it should have been a fully completed game on release.

I'm keeping an eye on this to see what things the expansions will include as they will probably go the Sims route and just include more parts to create vehicles\buildings\creatures with. Bit of a sham if they do.

So they may even be things for people who did buy the PC game? What? *head explodes*

Amazing an EA/Maxis game that requires you to buy expansions to enjoy everything the game should have been at release!

I didnt see that coming.

Now if only they would release an "Added Depth" expasion ill be happy

Will Wright Wants to Expand Spore
Not exactly the hardest job in the world.

Spore is going to see "broader" expansions than The Sims,
Translation: Spore is going to see "more" expansions than The Sims.

and Will Wright will increasingly look to players to develop game content in future titles.
Translation: Will Wright will increasingly use Google in a desperate attempt to find new shit to sell to stupid people.

How about adding the stuff we were shown way back when, in the early demo videos? Evolving from tide pool to ocean instead of going direct to land (and the option to stay a sea-creature the whole way through).

How about better transition between stages in general, make it less of a harsh break. Tide pool blends naturally to ocean which easily blends to land. The Creature stage could easily turn social just by zooming out a bit and having some more of the species turn up waving spears (or something) which should be able to again fluidly progress to the higher stages. Make it feel like one great game, not a collection-pack of 5 similarly-themed ones.

How about putting in some more incentive to be the vegetarian/pacifist type, instead of just eating and conquering everything in your path? Real life handles that one by making a predator's life actually pretty hard to survive in, which isn't such an issue when you can respawn, but either make it a bit easier for the "nice guys" or offer greater reward for being one.

How about some limited multiplayer? I think they have it right that going to an MMO style would make it too easy for some ass in the space stage to blow up your planet while you're busy being a creature, but in the higher stages you could have some fun by playing a competitive game against a friend (separate from your main play, like a skirmish in RTS games).

How about a choice of graphics... hard to do, but I really liked the more realistic style in the early videos - the animals and buildings looked real. Alien and unusual, but real. Now it looks like something from Pixar, which isn't inherently bad, but still...

There is plenty of scope for improvement and addition. Just hope that EA won't slap a full price tag on every expansion (read: I expect they will and will hate them for it)

This could be good, in that they might give us some of the content they originally promised us. Or they could milk us for money like the cynical bastards they are. I wonder which one is more likely?

Spore wasn't bad, but there are many areas that could use improvement.

Especially in Tribal mode...

I suppose it's too late to change your avatar, then.
Avatar came from the free version of creature creator. And I am in the market for a new one, but very few can keep the beat as well as Scritch does.
I must have that creature in my game. Is Scritch it's official name? I must find it in Sporepedia.

Oh I know it wasn't a stock one, but it isn't in the sporepedia...

Hrm. Is there any other way to get them from you to me?

If they flesh the game out in one expansion and not the ten or so sims has and sell it for expansion price, Like £20 pounds or less then I might consider buying it. I like many people wanted this game to be good and I don't mind spending £50 pounds in total if they actually sort out the problem and add alot of depth. If however its just a couple new part for each of the editors they can forget it.
