Final Fantasy XI Might Come To PlayStation Vita

Just because it's an older game doesn't mean it might not come to to Sony's newest platform.

Final Fantasy XI may be aging, but it's still better-liked and has a more devoted player base than Final Fantasy XIV. As a result, it's not too surprising to hear that Square Enix is apparently considering a new platform for the former title: the PlayStation Vita.

At the moment, it's being reported that Square Enix is still in the consideration stage for this project. This would apparently be a pretty basic port of the game; but it makes a large amount of sense that Square Enix would consider this system since it'll have both Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities.

This isn't definite though, as Hiromichi Tanak (Final Fantasy XI's former lead designer and producer of Final Fantasy XIV) merely told Famitsu that this was a possibility. On top of that, while the Vita port might happen, bringing the game to the PS3 isn't looking too likely because of "the difficulties of working with the PlayStation 3."

That... would be pretty cool.

If I end up getting a Vita, I'd definitely consider reviving my old FFXI account again to play on the go like that.

That said..
XI is so, so hard to get into. While it's gameplay was really nice, I find the big thing for me in MMOs is not feeling limited by the character creation. And XI's character creation is appalling >.>

I'm not sure I'd be able to try again, however brilliant it coming to the Vita would be.

By the by, what was with the 404's trying to get at this forum topic?

I'm not sure if you know this, but the game has been completely overhauled. You get STUPIDLY HIGH amounts of experience in the Abyssea areas and it's a lot easier to get through the low levels in a matter of hours, rather than DAYS. Note; I haven't played it since at least 2008/2009.. But friends are still actively playing it and enjoying the improvements.

Oh, and;

FYI, Tanaka has nothing to do with FFXIV anymore. He's the FORMER producer/lead designer of FFXI and he took full responsibility of FFXIV's failure and stepped down. The current producer/director of FFXIV, Naoki Yoshida, is actually IMPROVING the game.. Rather quickly, I might add.

He may have a very minor role in FFXI's development, but he is by no means in charge of anything. He fucked up. Badly. People replaced him.

We'll see. They said that FFXI would be on the PSP too and that never happened.

"Play the game on the road" they said.
"Connect remotely to your PS3" they said.

Besides, until I can get my character's name back and they un-overpowerlikeholyshit my favourite job in that game I'm not coming back.

I managed to get on this topic earlier after about four 404 errors. I made my post and now I see it's no longer coming up so I'll say what I said earlier again.

An MMO on a handheld? As cool as that sounds I can imagine the controls being pretty fiddly.

While an MMO on a handheld is a really cool idea, I doubt I'll play it even if I do get a Vita. I bought a copy of the game which came with a 30-day free trial for 1 euro about 2 or 3 years ago. I installed the game on my old computer, but I never actually ran it. I wouldn't have bought it but it was only 1 euro and me and a few friends decided to buy a few copies each (to get more than the 30 days offered) and play online with each other but I don't think any of us actually played it at all.

MMO on a handheld would be a fantastic idea. If I was a) planning to get a Vita and b) willing to commit to an MMO (again) I would be all over playing FFXI again if they did that.

I do know, I tried to return about a fortnight ago. As I said, the character creation is an important point for me. I appreciate XI's gameplay rather a lot, but four hairstyles with only two possible colours and a face determined by your choice of hair? Ew.

As for your last two paragraphs.. it's more complex than that. The less-ragey elements of the FFXIV fanbase are now very much under the impression that whatever role Tanaka may have played in the trouble the game has gone through, it was also in large part a case of someone above him screwing up as well, likely forcing him and his team to rush out an unfinished game (one important question being whether this state of completion was his fault, or the fault of the people developing the technology used to make everything).

And, while Yoshida and those working with him have made a vast number of technical improvements, he's.. still kinda controversial. Frankly, I miss Tanaka myself. None of the actual problems I've seen could not be attributed to executives shoving the game out before it was ready. The rest? That's a question of whether people like particular game design ideas or no.

I don't want to make a beaten to death and pointless argument any longer than it needs to be, however, so I'll simply say that I and a decent many others dislike some of Yoshida's changes (poorly optimised enemy resizing, for instance), many others are unsure of a few of them, and I personally really wish Tanaka had stuck around simply because I liked all the little touches his team originally added, many of which Yoshida has since torn out.

Final Fantasy XIV is, however, definitely on the up in general. I just happen to think that the things I see as positives, were the things it is entirely possible Tanaka would have achieved (and had already publicly scheduled somewhat) in a similar timeframe, had he not, as I see it, been scapegoated.

Aaand I'm out of this one, it's not really a fun subject. Please make of the above what you will and I'll try to read any reply given, but do forgive me not answering in turn.

Oh, final note:
Chocobos and Airships tentatively scheduled for patch 1.19! 1.18 scheduled for 21/07/11

You can't have a free-to-play game on a handheld.
the same logic can be applied to the a monthly subscription game on a handheld. that's why i'm hoping for the game to be one time buy then free to play but you can pay for bonus content or keep the subscription as a special program

Oh. By free to play I thought you meant no one time first time payment. My mistake.
my fault to. i probably should have been a bit more clear in that.

Ahh, the good old fashioned Valve Excuse. Never fails, does it?
