Sony Acquires Infamously Infamous Infamous Developer

Sony World Wide Studios has bought out Sly Cooper and Infamous developer Sucker Punch Productions

Sony has finally consummated their twelve year live-in relationship with Sucker Punch Productions, but apparently, not much is changing. Sucker Punch will retain its original management team and, with the exception of a single N64 title released back at the turn of the century, all of its games have been PlayStation exclusives anyway. This deal, which sees Sucker Punch become the sixteenth independent developer to join Sony WWS in exchange for an undisclosed sum, really only reinforces that exclusivity. Considering Sucker Punch's output has been uniformly brilliant, other platform owners may begin grumbling angrily around about... now.

"The relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties," said Sucker Punch's Brian Flemming, "As a part of the Sony Computer Entertainment group we look forward to introducing more innovative content and providing consumers with exciting, new interactive experiences."

Considering Infamous 2 [http://www.amazon.com/inFAMOUS-2-Playstation-3/dp/B002I0GX88/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312298785&sr=8-1]'s rather definite ending and the fact Sucker Punch is not developing the [ http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.289846-E3-Sly-Cooper-to-Return-to-PlayStation-After-Seven-Year-Hiatus] upcoming addition to the Sly Cooper, the "Innovative" and "new" in the quotation above might not just be empty buzzwords. Though my finely honed sense of cynicism is telling me we're probably going to see at least one more game about racoons, or superpowers, or racoons with superpowers.

Okay Sony, now let them do their own thing. Don't try to put your projects on their plate, unless you want them to screw it all away.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but suckerpunch has never made a bad game. With sony funding them, great things can happen.

Well, since not much is changing, all that happened was they got a bunch of money. Sounds like a good deal.

That's weird, I thought this happened a while ago.
It wont convince me to get a ps4 when that time comes but it is something to keep in mind.

I thought Sony already owned them. Well...I still haven't really played any of their games. Infamous is toiling away in my backlog until my sandbox fatigue subsides.

Hope it isn't like EA or Activision and when Infamous 3 comes out, they close the studio when the sales aren't what they expected.

I thought Sony already owned them, now I feel silly for not knowing that they didn't...

Oh well, good for them then, then that means they might make a game about superpowered raccons!

This actually concerns me, does this mean Suckerpunch's announced multiplatform title will get locked onto the PS3 by virtue of Sony owning them?

I have a PS3 so it doesn't affect me, but I hate exsclusives.

I...thought this agreement had already happened, to tell the truth. They were already Sony exclusive, to my knowledge, not knowing about a game two generations back, and were to the game reasons to put money down on what would be an assured game of great quality. I just thought they were a second-party developer--one owned by Sony, but indirectly, and not directly run. Like Retro Studios is to Nintendo, kind of thing. But hey, they made it official. Cool.

That's good news for Microsoft, Nintendo, and every other publisher in the world. They'll never have to suffer one of Sucker Punch's very, very poor games.

I hope it's exactly like that. I mean, I don't like the job loss part, but I like the less bad games being made and advertised as if they were worth playing when they aren't part.

I happened to enjoy Infamous. I haven't played Infamous 2 yet though, it looks like an improvement over the first. My point was more along the lines of if the first game sold 2 million units (numbers for example only) and the third game sells 3 million units then there is an increase. However if a 3rd game releases and only sells 2.5 million, while still making money, there is likely a chance that the studio closes because the publisher who owns them expected more than 3 million.

While that might be an oversimplification, it seems to be a developing trend in the industry lately.
