Mortal Kombat: Legacy Goes Blu-Ray

Mortal Kombat: Legacy may have started life as the film equivalent of fan fiction, but come this November, the series is headed to Blu-Ray.

Indulge me for a moment while I offer a short history lesson.

In June of 2010, a mysterious trailer hit the 'net [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101195-Mystery-Mortal-Kombat-Trailer-Will-Blow-You-Away] starring everyone's favorite Mortal Kombat characters (and the incredibly charismatic Michael Jai White). It was a wholly new take on the franchise, simultaneously more realistic than the traditional storyline and also much, much more grim. Instead of a lizard ninja, Reptile was an insane serial killer with a rare birth defect and cannibalistic tendencies, for instance.

The buzz surrounding the clip was huge and Warner Bros. (the company that owns the rights to Mortal Kombat) asked creator Kevin Tancharoen to turn his vision into a web series [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106978-Warner-Commands-Mortal-Kombat-Rebirth-Director-to-Finish-It]. Not only would this expose more people to Mr. Tancharoen's brilliant creation, it would also promote the then-upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot from NetherRealm Studios.

The series was well-received, recently came to an end, and now Warner Bros. has revealed plans to collect all 9 episodes of Mortal Kombat: Legacy [http://www.youtube.com/show/mortalkombatlegacy?s=1] on a single Blu-Ray disc to be released on November 8. High-Def Digest reports:

Specs have yet to be revealed, but supplements include: Mortal Kombat Legacy: Fights - A look at the role Fatalities and hyper-violence play in the Mortal Kombat storytelling process. Included within the piece is a detailed exploration of the fights and stunts staged during the production of the web-series and Mortal Kombat Legacy: Fan Made - Go inside the mind of Mortal Kombat super fan Kevin Tancharoen and uncover his passion and vision that brought Mortal Kombat: Legacy to life.

Blu-ray exclusives include: Mortal Kombat Legacy: Expanding The Netherrealm -- Multi-chapter documentary brings the Mortal Kombat universe to life; Mortal Kombat: Mysticism - Discover the powers that define the characters; Mortal Kombat: Gear - Explore all the weapons that make Mortal Kombat fighting unique.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $19.98.

Surprisingly absent from the announcement is any possible ties the release might have to the aforementioned game. I was at least expecting a code for some middling DLC trinkets. Maybe a Black Dynamite skin for Jax?

9 episodes? Aren't they only 5 minutes each? 20 bucks? None of this sounds right at all. Not that it isn't happening, it just sounds... retarded.
They be about ten min apiece jive turkey.

I enjoyed the original concept trailer loads more than the piecemeal nuggets that came later. It all felt like preview origin stories for each character building to a crescendo you could only experience with the game. I wanted a movie- or at least a longer narrative than a series of stand alone shorts. Something drawing everything together.

Oh well. I guess I could go watch the '90's MK over again. It has been some 7 or so years since I last saw it.
