British Tabloid Blames Grand Theft Auto For Submarine Rampage

British sailor Ryan Donovan recently went on a shooting spree inside a nuclear submarine. According to the Daily Mirror, Grand Theft Auto was an accomplice.

Donovan is staring down 25 years in prison for his attack on several crew members while the sub he was assigned to was docked in Southampton. According to his superior officers, Donovan was angry that they had denied his request for a transfer to a different vessel.

Petty Officer Andrew Love claims that Donovan said he was planning a "Grand Theft Auto-style massacre."

Likewise, Prosecutor Nigel Lickley said Donovan "... just giggled and said he was thinking how to start a massacre."

"He started talking about Grand Theft Auto where you start a massacre and rack up points by killing," Lickley adds.

For the purposes of this article, I'm going to give the Daily Mirror the benefit of the doubt and believe that the above quotes actually took place. However, I feel I should also point out that the Daily Mirror immediately capitalized on these comments, almost to the exclusion of the actual violent shooting rampage.

Have a look at this image thoughtfully captured by CVG [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/viewer.php?mode=article&id=266495]. That's from the front of the paper itself, and it's not alone. The article is emblazoned with the words "It was like he was playing a video game" and includes a sidebar dedicated to describing Grand Theft Auto.

According to the sidebar (which bears the heading "Cyber Kids Dabble With Death"), "some critics have dubbed it a 'killing simulator,'" and "it is accused of inciting vulnerable youngsters to commit horrific crimes." Granted, the Mirror isn't exactly lying, but they also completely fail to point out that they themselves are these "critics."

And why was that sidebar necessary anyway? Do the suddenly terrified geriatric readers of the Daily Mirror not know what Grand Theft Auto is? You don't see an aside explaining "Gordon Ramsay," "badger" or "sex dwarf" in that recent Sunday Sport piece [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/16/percy-foster-dead_n_962667.html], do you?

I'm just thinking one thing:

How on earth does a sick fuck like that ever get to work on a nuclear submarine?! Don't they have extensive screenings for that or something? Because if you really act like that, there's something wrong with you for sure.

Oh, yes, videogames being the scapegoat, blah blah blah, nothing we haven't heard before.

Let's see, he either did it because he got to play Grand Theft Auto so much he lost touch with reality and thought the inside of the sub was Vice City orrr
he got cabin fever from being locked up in a metal tube with a bunch of other guys for long periods of time.

But at least it's good to see people going back to the old standards.

Yes,the danger of car-based rampage and murder in urban setting is a real threat in a nuclear sub.
I don't believe for a second the sailor talked in detail about GTA,and the prosecutor took the very little info he was given and filled in the blanks about "points" and other stupid bullshit like that.
Then again,we are talking about the Daily Mail and old bitter people who have no idea what they are talking about,so all reference to video games are rendered void and null.

This is the Daily Mirror, I wouldn't believe any of the quotes or facts until they are cross-referenced with a news source that isn't more akin to a comic.

Before I go on my stupid killing spree, I'm going to talk a lot about how The Daily Mirror and the Fox News inspired me with their utter asininity.

Also: Do the captchas keep getting crazier with each passing day?

Serving on a submarine, more so than on any other navy watercraft, can easily break a man's mind.
Sounds like this guy was serving with people he didn't get along with, hence the request for transfer - which was denied.

le sigh, I was having a very good day until I went into my local shop and saw this headline glaring out at me. Making something as trivial as video games your main focus in a story about the tragic murder of lots of people is to me, morally wrong because its saying that the killer was a sweet innocent person UNTIL he played grand theft auto, which to me is sympathizing with the murderer. Also, i've yet to actually see a newspaper story that had something good about videogames, you wouldnt see the story about gamers making a big discovery to help fight aids and the only reason you wont see it is because of the video games part.

When I saw the article I thought it was meant he used the submarine to go on a rampage. I am severely disappointed.

Lol people who believe the things they read in the Daily Mirror are usually taxi drivers or old people who have no contact with the real world and represent a tiny of minority of people anyway, this doesn't worry me

The Daily Mirror is akin to a man on a box wearing a tin foil hat and shouting YRAGLGLARBLY RALGPLAGAPHONE

The only thing the Mirror is good for is substitute toilet paper, even then its cheap paper is harsh on your arse.

Even Confucious says it :
' He who look at mirror for news is looking at dumb self '

Disclaimer: I am copyrighting that quote as we speak :p
