Neverwinter Becomes an MMO

[ign=http://www.ign.com/videos/2011/10/05/neverwinter-story-trailer?objectid=84411]
Cryptic's delayed Neverwinter is being changed from an online co-op RPG to a full-on free-to-play MMO.

A year ago, Cryptic's Jack Emmert Oblivion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103332-The-Neverwinter-Formula-Co-op-Dragon-Age-With-a-Touch-of-Oblivion]." But while instanced dungeons, social hubs and other MMO-like features were on the menu, he made a point of noting that it would not in fact be an MMO. "I want people going in knowing that we're doing things differently to an MMO," he said.

But the situation got a little sticky back in May of this year when Atari delayed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110502-Cryptic-Studios-Bought-By-Chinese-MMO-Operator], as Perfect World said it wanted to make the game "a more immersive experience."

And what that means, it turns out, is a transition to a full-blown free-to-play MMO with a focus on action. The game will apparently be somewhat similar to Vindictus [http://vindictus.nexon.net/], which offers session-based gameplay "and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully murdering hordes of monsters." Every content pack for the game will be free but some consumables and vanity items will come with a price tag attached.

Because of all the changes, Neverwinter [http://www.playneverwinter.com/] now isn't expected to be out until the end of 2012. Hope it works out to be worth the wait.

Oh, i always thought it was gonna be an MMO to begin with. We'll see how this goes then, looking foward.

Vindictus part sounds good too, the combat in that was neat.

Oh well, never mind Neverwinter, it's back to Nights for me. I didn't like Vindictus much.

In before the: OMG THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO USE THE NAME NEVERWINTER!!
Im curious as to why you would think anybody would say something as stupid as that.
Because it's been said before numerous times on other forums when stuff like this happens.

Anyway, I love Neverwinter Nights so I'll be cautiously optimistic about this.

Well there goes my interest in the game. Just going to be another useless DDO.

Dear Cryptic,

Thanks for killing my interest in this D&D game by making it a fuckin action-MMO, especially when you tease me with the epic forgotten realms campaign setting that is Neverwinter. May your souls rot from the hell you create.

Much Hatred,
Hashbrick

Funny that when they announced that there would be a new Neverwinter, i went "Yay, finally an RPG Co-op, not just another crappy MMO".

And now it's an MMO.

..I'll just go back to complain how there's never any good RPGs anymore.

The voicework in the beginning reminds me of Fable. A bad way to open a "serious" trailer...

Somehow, I'm not holding my breath.

You really have to wonder why all these studios are going out of their way to produce MMOs they know are gonna suck and fail. I mean, granted, we have the same thing happening in every other genre, but how is anyone willing to put the money and time required to build an MMO into something that's gonna be a failure?

Why even bother with a NWN MMO when D&D Online is around and very successful?

Also this is being developed my Cryptic, so it won't be worth the wait and will be very inferior to D&DO.

Am I seeing things or is Drizzt in the tavern?

I had never heard of this game before, but I'm not really interested in an MMO honestly.
I also find it ironic they made it an MMO for "a more immersive experience"; 'cus nothing says immersion like mailbox dancing elves and people speaking in textese.
