Woman Reveals Sale Of Son On Facebook, Gets Busted

Who could have guessed this would have ended badly?

Facebook has helped cops catch a lot of dumb criminals lately. There was <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111955-Evil-Genius-Gets-Busted-After-Taunting-Cops-On-Facebook>that one evil genius who taunted the police and gave away his location. Then <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.267597-Burglar-Busted-for-Posting-Crime-Scene-Photos-on-Facebook>there was the dude who took photos of himself burglarizing a journalist's home (which he then posted on the victim's son's Facebook wall). Oh, and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.305798-Surprise-Authorities-Investigating-Looters-Swag-Pictures-On-Facebook>let's not forget all the moron looters in Britain from earlier this year. And now there's Bridget Wismer of Pennsylvania, who apparently announced she was selling her baby via the social network.

Wismer has been accused of selling her newborn son to a 54-year-old man named John F. Gavaghan. According to a court motion, Gavaghan is classily described as "allegedly a known seller of prescription medications and bookmaker at Delaware Park."

Wismer gave birth to her son on August 31st, and the boy was reported addicted to opiates when he was born. As a result, he had to remain in the hospital after his mom was released. Meanwhile, Wismer apparently arranged to sell her child to Gavaghan for $15,000, along with an extra $2,000 for allowing Gavaghan to sign his name on the kid's birth certificate. On September 4th, the woman left the hospital and went to a Philadelphia casino while Gavaghan stayed in the hospital with the child.

The two were arrested last weekend at the end of a month-long investigation. Each has been charged with felony dealing in children and conspiracy.

Authorities began investigating Wismer after she reportedly announced her plans to sell the boy on Facebook. Speaking to reporters, Wismer stated that she was an unemployed single mother of two children, that Gavaghan had given her money (though it wasn't payment for adopting her child) and that she didn't mean to do anything wrong or illegal: "I didn't do anything wrong. There was nothing that was hidden, everything was out in the open."

Wismer's newborn child is currently staying with a foster family and her family will be allowed custody (or at least visitation rights) in the near future. Wismer, however, is under court order to not have contact with her son.

She only wanted the money. She says everything was in the open, she didn't do anything wrong. She doesn't think selling her child is wrong?

She's absolutely right though-the only thing she did wrong was make the deal so transparent! I've secretly sold a total of twelve of my children over the years to various interested parties and never once gotten into trouble!

Oh balls.....

As opposed to what? Because the foster system is so often touted as a loving institution that does a great job with kids? Sure, this is pretty low, but when you've got no good options, at least she picked one that she got something out of as well. In the end, I'd withhold judgment based entirely on who the guy was, this article makes him out to be fairly decent. If she was trading the kid to her dealer for her next fix, than yeah, fuck that. But who is this guy, a local, financially stable man who's always wanted a kid? A crazy cannibal? I don't know, but depending on the answer it could have been the best thing that ever happens in that kids life.

Besides, aren't there entirely legal routes of doing exactly this? The only wrong doing on the surface of this is an absence of proper paperwork. I certainly don't have a problem with some useless example of a person handing her kid off to someone who might have the means to provide him some sort of life.

So it's okay to sell your children to a person you probably don't know anything about their background; but they look clean, have money and are well kept. Doesn't seem right to me. At least the legal way there is some form of checking on the people trying to adopt children. Is it foolproof, no but there is some type of check and balance at least.

Yes the system is messed up, but no one really knows who this man is.

The fact that there's even a crime called "Dealing in Children" makes me embarrassed to be a human.

The number of people who randomly judge the guy based on nothing but the fact that he's old and a guy is simply stupid.

Maybe he never had kids, and wants one before he dies, couldn't find a girl or is sterile and the adoption program won't let him in (single old father =/= stable perfect family)?
Thus, he helps out a single mother by giving her some money and more or less adopting the kid.

Sure, the mother is a retard who talks about it on facebook and wastes the money at the casino, but there's no reason to suspect the guy of anything.

Sex Offender? CP on his computer? Had children in the past?
Aight, be suspicious. But otherwise, stop assuming the worst of humanity. To do that, go read some youtube comments.

I'd agree with you but for the description of him.
allegedly a known seller of prescription medications and bookmaker at Delaware Park."
A drug dealing bookie? Sounds like a perfect father figure.

The kid was born addicted to opiates so even ignoring the sale the mother isn't exactly parent of the year either. Then again, the circle of people who would think purchasing or selling a child is a good idea is probably a relatively small one...

As an expectant mother, I don't condemn this woman, I pity her. She doesn't deserve our scorn, she needs HELP, and a lot of it. There are a lot of reasons why a mother can be put in a position to abandon her child at birth, but here?... *shakes head* This story is wrong on so many levels, I wouldn't know where to start.

Normally, I wouldn't care too much about this, but the kid shares my birthday. Kinda puts things in perspective.

I agree but it says the child was already an addict when born so it's logical to assume he's not a good choice for father. Also, putting on facebook and not seeing anything wrong with what she did makes me think she's not all there.
