Leisure Suit Larry Creator Will Make Sequels

The lovable cad will return for new adventures to titillate teenage boys with his sexual antics.

Inspired by games like Softporn Adventure [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softporn_Adventure], Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was published by Sierra Games back in 1987. Players assumed the role of Larry Laffer, a poor young guy as he desperately tried to get laid. Like many adventure games of the time, you guided Larry through fetch quests and simple puzzles by using text commands but the reward was usually a naughty picture of a lady or some digitized humping. What made the experience more endearing than the iterations of this decade (Magna Cum Laude, Box Office Bust ) was the sarcastic writing full of cultural references and in-jokes among Sierra staff. After years away from the franchise, casual gamemakers Replay announced that the original designer and writer of Leisure Suit Larry, Al Lowe, will return to take the helm of a remake of the first game as well as start work on a new LSL title.

"Replay can also now create new games in the series," said Replay's representative. "The goal is to go back to the fun and tongue-in-cheek nature of the original games, rather than the fairly poor games released more recently."

Replay Games is a small outfit based in Austin, TX. Founder Paul Trowe got his start in the games business with Sierra back in the 80s and he was finally able to negotiate ownership of all publishing rights to Leisure Suit Larry, including the ability to create new games in the franchise. You may remember The Escapist reporting the remake back in June [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110692-Leisure-Suit-Larry-Returns-Later-This-Year], but a representative from Replay confirmed to us that this new deal is for the whole banana.

"This deal is much, much broader and more exciting. Replay now has the global rights to the whole LSL franchise," the representative said. "They can recreate, re-release, redesign generally make all of the existing titles available on any platform they so choose. With new graphics, new controls and optimized for touch screen, analog controls, or whatever control systems [the] platform uses."

I think everyone can agree that touching the screen to interface with a character's body parts is exactly the direction that Leisure Suit Larry needs to compete in today's market.

There's no timetable on when the remake will be released or when we can expect a new LSL title, but I'm glad that Replay has its top men working on it in Al Lowe. Top men.

The most modern ones as in Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust were total shit compared to the others. Reach back and play the older ones like Land of the Lounge Lizards, which is pretty much a direct copy of the aforementioned Softporn Adventure only with graphics.

If they're bringing Al Lowe back to make more games and he still has it in him to be as creative as he was back in the day whatever they come up with should be fairly entertaining.

I found Magna Cum Laude quite entertaining in a guilty-pleasre-if-you're-in-the-right-mood sort of way, but Box Office Bust was atrocious and holds the title of "Worst Game I Have Ever Played". I don't know what could topple it. A game that set my computer on fire or caused it to explode, perhaps.

Its not going to be a FPS, with visceral action and squad management with the lead platform being the 360 ?
Suprised.

I remember the original Larry's... and Heroes Quests, Space Quests, Kings Quests ... all brilliant stuff, but how to translate that to the modern markets ?
I hope old Al still has some magic left... good days those.

Quest for Glory remake. Now. No, yesterday please... I'd love to see the same humor writing with a more modern day RPG epic world like Elder Scrolls. Maybe even compress the original series into one epic game.

This has somehow peaked my morbid curiosity: I wonder if there's a stealth based voyeur game. As in, you creep around changing rooms and open windows hoping to watch people change.

AT ANY RATE I have played the original and Magna Cum Laude, and really preferred the original. Magna Cum Laude had some hilarious moments (like Larry's inconsistent character scale,) but was focused on minigames.

I'm really glad to see that Al Lowe is finally getting his hands back on his own creation. The way that Lowe was treated when Sierra fell apart was terrible. I for one would spend some money on another remake of this game. I miss the old adventure-type games of the 90s.

Now I can't help but imagine Al Lowe being wheeled through a large warehouse full of crates representing IPs shelved by Replay Games.

Fools. Bureaucratic fools. They don't know what they've got there.

Funnily enough the first PC game I ever saw was land of the lounge lizards, on the first day we got a PC, back in 89, when I was just 13. Watching a guy chasing a leaking blow up doll around the screen was something very different to what I had see with games up till then. Good times. And yes dad's parenting skills left something to be desired sometimes.....

I think the games lost their Benny Hill quality and just became seedy around the 3rd game.

As hot as that girl in the picture manages to be in 16 colors or less I have to wonder if these games are going to manage to keep things classy at all. The skuzz factor is potentially off the charts.

I've been interested in playing one of these games before but apparently the later games aren't good.
The originals are quite good. If you can imagine Phillip J Fry trying to get to out with Leela, rather than the Custer's Revenge images of sexuality in the later ones.

Leather Goddess of Phobos is also very good - though purely text.

No, really, I like that idea.

OT: Consider me intrigued, but I'll judge it when I see it.

That's been done actually: Quest for Glory 2: Trial by Fire (by AGDInteractive) [http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/homepage/homepage.html]
If you want to play the first installment, the VGA version Sierra made is widely available [http://www.abandonia.com/games/174/QuestforGlory1.htm].
That's just to get you started, after that, you're on your own (tip: use Google. ;) ).

I played the original LSL in the Land of the Lounge Lizards back when I was 10 or 11. It was kinda hilarious, retrospectively, that your dear old dad let his two dearest daughters play such a game, but then again, I did walk away with some important sex ed lessons (always wear a condom, even if it is a "smooth, colored, lubricated, plaid, peppermint rubber"). After that, well, we played the entire series, but what appealed to us was the puzzle-solving which had always been so prevalent in the Sierra games. LSL7: Love for Sail was hilarious, though, and worth it, if only to feed Julia Child a pie laced with orgasmic powder. After that, well... Completely lost interest since Al Lowe wasn't truly on-board the projects. Magna Cum Laude and Box Office Bust held absolutely no appeal for me. I might take a peek at this new project, especially since Paul Trowe started out with Sierra.

Incidentally, the quintessence of Al Lowe's brilliant humor can also be found in Sierra's Torin's Passage [http://www.allowe.com/Torin/], which was absolutely awesome, and did what Shrek did years before the green ogre came to the silver screen: wit for both young and old(er?).

I want to believe, but those 3D games they made were so blargh. My life hasn't been the same all these years without the guidance of Al Lowe. I'm not the man I thought I'd become. Err. . . Anyway. Please, bring back the 2D animated look, yes?

FINALLY. I would've lost my faith in... uhh.. I mean, my faith would've plunged few more meters underground if I found out they would keep making terrible Larry games without Al Lowe.

Loved the first 6 games (if you're a fan you'll understand), hated what they made with the two last ones.

Whaaaaaat no way! I love this game as well! Unfortunately I have no idea where the bloody CD-Rom is, as I would've played it again now that you played the Nostalgia Card. Despite Polish version I remember it being incredibly fun and witty, even though I was about 12 or 13 at the time of playing.

...Or even younger, hell if I know...

With the current prudish nature of the ESRB, they'll have to walk a VERY fine line to avoid an AO rating.

Also, Sierra released a second edition of LSL: MCL that was a full AO version. But, it was only available for PC's. I only ever saw it for digital download, because no store wanted to have an AO game on its shelf.
