Online Pass Required to Play as Arkham City's Catwoman

You'll need either a new copy or an online pass if you want to try that whip out for yourself.

When it was revealed that Catwoman would be a playable character in upcoming release Arkham City, we all stopped for a moment to nod our heads in approval. Now, however, Warner Bros. has confirmed that you'll only be able to bounce Gotham's premiere jewel thief around the city if you've purchased either a brand new copy of the game, or an online pass.

In response to questions from Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-13-batman-online-pass-unlocks-catwoman] about Catwoman's status, Warner Bros. revealed that, "Players who purchase previously owned copies of Batman: Arkham City can access the playable Catwoman content [by buying the Batman VIP Pass] for £7.99 [around $12]/ 800 Microsoft Points." The statement adds that playing as Catwoman is not required to complete the game.

Either redeeming the code packaged with new copies of Arkham City or purchasing an online pass will unlock Catwoman's missions, as well as her character in the Riddler's Revenge challenge mode. She will still appear as a non-playable story character regardless of whether or not you have an access code.

Given how amazing she looks in this trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/3359-Batman-Arkham-City-Catwoman] (those heels burn), it'll be a disappointment for second-hand buyers to learn that Warner Bros. won't allow them to pilot Catwoman around Gotham without paying up. Although having her as a playable character isn't essential, the promise of some cat-based gameplay will still have been a big draw for many fans. But hey, we still get Robin, right?

Batman: Arkham City will be released for Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 18th.

Why call it an online pass? why not just call it day one DLC and get it over with.

Well this is annoying. I was just going to get the lend of this off my brother. It looks like i'll have to buy an online pass because I really want to play as catwoman.

That's... really, really annoying. Seriously, this is not the way to do this. Just... ugh.

Yep. The precedent set is now an industry standard. Thank you everyone who said "I dont see why this is such a big deal"

This is also a reason why I typically wont preorder anything. Little bits like this like to come out right before launch. Had I not gotten my copy free with my video card and already had it applied via steam regrettably I would have to pass on this game for this.

The problem with Online Passes in single player games is obvious. NOT EVERYONE IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Older 360s require people to own a separately purchased adapter just to connect to the internet via wi-fi.

At least with multiplayer online passes, people who need it can redeem it.

Honestly who actually cares about being able to play as Catwoman anyway? Last time I checked the title it said "Batman: Arkham City"

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh...The one hero they know how to market and they even manage to fuck that up...Granted, I never planed to buy Arkham City right away or even when it was still fresh (I probably won't get mine until spring or later, if they release a complete edition). Still, this seems like something they're only doing because they know they can get away with it. As much of a dick-move this is, it isn't enough to get most people to cancel reservations or, to refuse to buy the game. Of course if any other product did this kind of bait-and-switch heads would roll.

This is exactly why I sold my 360 and got a PS3.

Well, that and the exclusives. /shot

Robin is pre-order DLC which is cool but saying Catwoman is a good 10% of the game only to declare it will be free DLC for those who buy new is a bit shity.
I suppose all game publishers feel the need to clawback some of the cash available from the second hand market.

Holy industry sanctioned neglect and disregard of consumers, Batman!

Can you imagine Skyrim pulling this? Not being able to use, say, fire magic or axes in a second hand copy unless you buy an online pass? Madness.

I'm confused, though. Didn't online passes only make any sense at all for multiplayer features? Because, you know, if you are playing online it is guaranteed that you can access the internet from your console?

I can't say I'm terribly fond of this, but I must admit this is one of the least dickish anti-used-games things they could have done.

It's a code that only affects single player and to my knowledge is a rather small part of the game as a whole. It reminds me a lot of RAGE and the sewer things it had. It's the same style at any rate.

I'd like it a lot more if publishers stopped being completely retarded and realized that used games are not a problem, but this is definitely an improvement over the other shenanigans they pull.

It's annoying but not as bad as I thought it would be. Regardless, it is becoming annoying just how much of this game (one I am really looking forward to) is DLC, or preorder only, or preorder from a particular place only...gah.

In the end as long as this stuff is all available for DLC and I can pick and choose just what I want, I can live with it. But nickel and diming is becoming a trend that bothers me more with each passing year.

I don't like it based on this fact alone. They should have revealed this at the same time they showed catwoman. I myself am not allowed by my parents to have any console online. so if I had pre-ordered this game based on playing catwoman as well I'd be screwed.
before you ask, my parents don't allow online games because they think it'll give the computer viruses.
