Uncharted Movie Studio Taking on Assassin's Creed

The studio bringing Uncharted to the big screen is picking up another videogame franchise, one that focuses less on snark, more on hidden blades.

According to a recent report by Variety, Ubisoft is in the midst of finalizing a deal that would allow Sony Pictures to adapt the massively popular Assassin's Creed franchise for the big screen. Full details of the agreement have yet to be announced, but for now it seems like Sony will be co-funding and distributing the upcoming film, while Ubisoft will be maintaining creative control of the project.

The Assassin's Creed movie's green-light has only just begun to shift from flicker to healthy glow, but Ubisoft had already been thinking about this and other game to screen adaptations for months. You may remember that back in March, Ubisoft started poking around [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108531-Ubisoft-Probes-Interest-in-Assassins-Creed-and-Ghost-Recon-Film-Adaptations] the minds of Internet users (always a dangerous maneuver) with online surveys, asking what elements players would like to see included in a hypothetical Assassin's Creed screen adaptation. Whatever opinions it gleaned from the unwashed virtual masses are still a secret, but at least, on some level, it looks like the company is doing its best to deliver what its fan-base actually wants, instead of just making it up as it goes along.

Sony Pictures has reportedly beaten out Universal and "other major Hollywood studios" for the rights, and Ubisoft may have gotten lucky that the company willing to fork over the most cash is the same one that's already gaining experience with other high-profile videogame titles. Sony is currently handling the inFAMOUS and Uncharted films, and while we've yet to see the final results of those endeavors, Sony has already shown us that it's willing to make large changes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111517-Uncharted-Movie-Bags-New-Director] in support of the fans and original source material. It's also been recently involved with the Spider-man films and the Daniel Craig Bond movies, so it's got at least a little nerd-cred there, too.

Obviously, with the film at such an early stage of development (so early, in fact, that you can't even call it development), there have been no announcements, rumors, or lively forum wars about the movie's cast, story, or expected release date. Still, that's no reason not to get an early start. I'm throwing in my vote for Nathan Fillion as Ezio. He's completely wrong for the part, but I'm always rooting for that guy to actually land something worthwhile.

Win?

...I dunno, if they want to sell the gimmick that people can access the memories of their ancestors through a machine they better work pretty hard. I explained that plot point to my father, and he just laughed....

Not going to lie, my very first thought was 'Ohhh no...'
This will either be great or a disaster, I personally can't see Ass. Creed translating into a movie very well at all.

I have a feeling that Bradley Cooper would make a fine Ezio. He's a good impersonator, that's why I think he could pull of the accent.

I'm not sure it's any dumber than most major movies out there, though.

The real question is whether it'll focus on Altair or Ezio. I'm guessing Ezio.

"Actually land something worthwhile"??? I'm guessing you haven't watched CASTLE? That's a corking show! Done well there. Firefly was worthwhile, just Fox are morons. If Fillion gets chosen for Uncharted I will be so happy... but he's getting a wee bit chubby being on the TV circuit, doesnt look quite right for it now. David Boreanaz would be good!

Actually, that was one of the questions they asked in their survey. Do you want Altair, Ezio, or a new assassin. I'm with you though, it'll likely be Ezio.

Okay here's what they could do and would be awesome;

Do an Assassin's Creed film about a brand new Assassin in a new time period fighting the Templars, plenty of Stabbings with hidden blades, the usual.

That's it.

They could totally do a new character and have it fit nicely into the universe. No need to tread on the toes of established characters, plus it would mean they could appeal to a wider audience who might not know all of the ins and outs of the universe.

Maybe they will do it. If so that'd be cool. And so forth.

Interesting... I don't know if I can be happy, and here is why. You can't say that the movie will be good based on a movie that isn't out yet. This may be a horrible horrible thing. This may be a good thing. I'm not inclined to think Uncharted will be a good movie, just like so many other video game movies are really lousy. It's really just random chance, as pointed out by Leonard Mlodinow in the Drunkard's Walk. He points out the Tomb Raider films directly in his book. The first one Grossed over $400 Million, world wide. The second one flopped hard. Green lighting these projects doesn't mean they will be any good. I hope they are good. I wouldn't mind there being a video game movie renaissance, like what has happened in the last decade or so with comic book movie adaptation, with rare exception (Damn you Green Lantern!!!).

A movie based on an Ubisoft game? Will we have to be online to watch it?
Haha, that was my exact thought, "how are they going to work in their stupid ass DRM?!?".

I'll just cross my fingers and pray that the movies will become a reality and not suck.

Nathan Fillion and Bruce Campbell, one of them is a future subject that isn't Desmond but might even be Subject 16. They explore the past of an ancestor, say in Asia, and make a story entirely accessible to new audiences while making references to Ezio and Altair and the actual game series.

We could see people like Guan Yu or Wu Cheng'en or other people from different time periods through assassin's like Shao Jun in China.

Then again, that's really just wishful thinking. We're unfortunately still in the world where Asians aren't well-liked on the silver screen.

Oh for goodness sake...

I'm at the point where I really don't care whether these upcoming videogame movies will suck or not. As far as I'm concerned, they're all hopelessly redundant, and obviously nothing more than a cash in.

Case 1: Uncharted- the games are already so cinematic in their approach to gameplay (some would say too much), that a movie adaption is simply going to be little more than the Uncharted game without the user input. What sets Uncharted apart is its interactive nature, and by removing that it can only stand as a treasure-hunting adventure, something already overdone in Hollywood with the Indiana Jones and National Treasure films.

Case 2: Assassin's Creed- the entire schtick with Assassin's Creed is that you're playing a game within a game. The plot gimmick is that you're actually controlling Desmond as he relives his ancestor's past in a reality simulator. In short: the entire plot of Assassin's Creed is informed by, and indeed is a play on the fact that it's a videogame. It's a story informed entirely by the nature of the medium which it's in.

Honestly, what's the point of adapting a videogame into a movie? Videogames now are so advanced graphically that there aren't any stunts or special effect-stuff Hollywood can produce that videogame developers can't. Videogame adaptions of films are little more than a Let's Play video done with real actors. Entirely pointless, and usually shit beyond all belief. The sooner they die off and videogames can stay as videogames, films as films, then the better off we'll all be.

i think the video games won't crumble into oblivion because a movie is being made off of them.

OT:

well at least sony got the rights for it, so they either are going to rock all these movies and they will be nice popcorn flicks, or it's gonna suck ass and they lost on a big gamble.
