Skyrim Is a Neverending Story

Skyrim's procedurally-generated quests make it the kind of game that fans can play forever.

Did Skyrim [http://www.amazon.com/Oblivion-5th-Anniversary-ed-Xbox-360/dp/B0050JN7VU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320858085&sr=8-1], the latest chapter in the Elder Scrolls series, features procedurally-generated quests that will give players an endless list of things to do, even after the game's various plotlines are wrapped up. Random NPCs will offer tasks as you work through the game and jobs will also be available from the game's various factions, even after their quest lines are completed.

"The vibe of the game is that it's something that you can play forever," Skyrim Director Todd Howard told Wired [http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/11/skyrim-infinite-quests/].

Helping make that system work will be secrets and random pick-ups that players will discover as they quest. Howard said Bethesda learned a lot about "environmental storytelling" while working on Fallout 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Game-Year-Xbox-360/dp/B001REZLY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320858299&sr=8-1] and got better at it with Skyrim.

"The world is probably the one thing that sets [Skyrim] apart from other games," he said. "It feels really real for what it is... It's just fun to explore."

The potential downside to procedural generation, as any Daggerfall [http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-Chapter-II-Daggerfall-pc/dp/B000BP3E0M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320858335&sr=8-2] veteran can tell you, is repetition. Daggerfall was a huge game with a nearly limitless supply of dungeons but once you'd been through enough of them you couldn't help but notice that they were all rather same-y. 15 years down the road, Skyrim will presumably be better, but how it will avoid that trap - or for how long - remains to be seen.

We'll find out soon enough: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim comes out on November 11 - just two freakin' days! - for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Yeaaaah. I remember seeing a video where the guy was fighting a dragon, and an NPC shows up out of nowhere to start a quest with him. WHILE fighting the dragon. It ended up getting him killed.

Ironically, just after he died, the NPC said "Don't cross me or I'll kill you!". Sorry, buddy, but you got beaten to the punch.

Wasn't the problem with Daggerfall that it was called Buggerfall or Daggerfail?

Actually, no, I never had that problem with Oblivion. See, I'm a completionist by nature, and after realising the scope of the game and how many little sidequests they'd showed into the damn thing, I just figured I couldn't be bothered. Not at all.

"Hey, I can see that you're kinda busy here, but I was wondering if you could help me with-"
"Oh god! I'm on fire! Help me damnitt!!!"
"Ok, we'll get to that but first could you help me-"
"My legs! It's eating my legs! Help me for crying out loud! Get some guards, shoot some magic kick it in the eye, something!"
"Ok, y'know what, I can see you don't want to help me. Fine. Whatever. But you just missed out on 40 gold and some [Rough Leather Shoes]."

So I guess this means I'll never get to play my roommate's copy of Skyrim. Curse you, game companies that want money for their games from everyone who plays them!

Hail, "savior of the lands and greatest hero of our time"! I was hoping you could help me with a matter of some small importance. It turns out I need to "build" a decent "hammock" for my "daughter", and that requires me finding "11" "wooden spoons". If you could find the items I've detailed, I would be happy to reward you with "50 gold" and "75 experience", as well as something I found and placed in my "bedside cabinet".

Greetings, "warrior who has not yet saved the day"! I was hoping you could help me with a matter of some small importance. It turns out I need to "destroy" a decent "deer" for my "wife", and that requires me finding "1" "warrior". If you could find the items I've detailed, I would be happy to reward you with "1 deer meat" and "1 deer blood", as well as something I found and placed in my "oak tree".

Seriously, I kid, I kid! I could not be more excited about a game than I am of Skyrim right now.

Randomly generated quests? IMO thats just lazy programming to create stuff that will have no setpieces and no bearing on the world in general. I'm personally disgusted that Bethesda would lower themselves to such a practice.

Shovelware quests, if you like...

ROFL to most of the comments above:

"Sure little girl, I will escort you to your mother's cottage...
ROARRRR...OMG! OMG, That Dragon just swooped her up in front of my eyes! OMG! He's eating her and dropping blood all over the village!"

Or,

[Guards come running over to you]" Sir, your under arrest. Resist and we shall kill you where you stand!"
"But what did I do...OMG, look out behind you, it's a Bear!"
"We shall take you to the holding cel....AHHHHHH...[throat girggling of blood]"
"Nice big black bear..."[gets on horse and rides away]

These story flukes/random adventures/incounters is what will make this game sell millions!

My favorite frightening moment in Fallout 3 with surround sound on, "Oh that looks like a church lets go check it out, OMG! [A Mutant with a Flamethrower comes out around the corner of the church and scorches me to death!]"

I don't get it. Why are people mad about this? It's just more stuff to do on-top of what you'd expect from an Elder Scrolls game.

Actually, what I was reading about this was that the NPC's would give you quests that sent you to parts of the map you hadn't explored yet.

Randomly generated quests can be lame, but if they give you an excuse to find all the places on the map I'm all for it. In oblivion there was so much I didn't see because I had no reason to go there. In fallout I did go to every point on the map but a lot of them were just run bys, I didn't stop to look around.

THIS is what I like about Bethesda games, and what I've always wanted. I don't want a quest with locations to go to. I want a world, with a quest in it. I want to explore and go goof off however I want.

I would prefer a fallout style fewer, but highly varied and more lengthy quests than endless generic ones. I have always despised quests like that as they get boring pretty damn quickly.

Bugger that.

Bugger that with a rake.
