Yamauchi Confirms Gran Turismo 6

Gran Turismo 6 is coming. Hopefully within your lifetime.

Speaking to IGN, Polyphony Digital CEO (and massive car geek) Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that the developer is working on Gran Turismo 6.

"Of course we're working on GT6 already," Yamauchi said, before explaining that the firm hopes to offer players the kinds of things that just aren't possible with simple downloadable content updates for Gran Turismo 5.

Gran Turismo fans will recall that GT5 recently received a massive swath of downloadable content (dubbed Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/113498-Huge-Update-Headed-For-Gran-Turismo-5]) including new tracks, cars and gameplay options. The size of the update, it's $0 price tag and the fact that it arrived almost a year after the game's launch was a shock to many, but seemingly serves as evidence that Polyphony Digital is committed to giving its fans their money's worth, instead of churning out new sequels merely to pull in a quick buck.

"Things that we can provide through DLC we will, so that's really the market difference," Yamauchi says.

Fans should also be pleased to hear that there is more DLC planned for Gran Turismo 5.

"It's been about a year since we've released the game and in the interim we've had about 15 updates that were performed on the game. These set up the basic platform for the system," Yamauchi says. "Now that we have that out of the way, we're ready to release more expansions and content to add to the game. I think that will include cars and trucks that we'll be releasing maybe once every two months or so from here on out. What we do from here on is also really dependent on the reaction of the users to this first DLC that we just released because this is the first one. Now we have the feedback from our customers and we'll see how that will affect what we will do from here."

Hopefully this upcoming stream of DLC will be enough to tide fans over until Gran Turismo 6 hits store shelves in, best guess, 2024.

Hopefully GT6 won't need a year's worth of patches to fix all its design flaws. Then again, Yamauchi-san is like the head of the School of Illogical Game Design, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Big props to the GT5 team for putting out that huge free DLC. It's a shame that it was basically essential to do that for GT5 to actually be worth the money though.

Well, I've never been a fan of the GT series. That said I've owned all of them. GT5 was a bloody nightmare and still is. The load times while lessened with the 2.0 patch are still atrocious, the menu is still slow to navigate, and the used car lots! Screw the used car lots and online shops. Don't make race series (like the truck one) without having the correct vehicles available at the ready to buy! I swear the only games with worse load times are the Codemasters games and even then it's so close it's hard to tell.

One can only hope they actually get some competent people to optimize the next game.

Oh god, I had pleasantly forgotten about the fucking trucks... I had purchased/played the game every day for 2 and a half months before I FINALLY saw a friggin truck in the used car selection. A true moment of controller throwing in relief that was!
