Hear "Little Drummer Boy" Courtesy This Robot Orchestra

A scanner is a kind of robot, right?

In the spirit of Christmas -- and more specifically, in the spirit of this awesome technojunk cover of The Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114568-Mechanical-Trash-Plays-House-Of-The-Rising-Sun] -- I present this video in which a drum-playing robot and a repurposed Hewlett-Packard scanner play the Christmas classic "Little Drummer Boy."

Granted, the scanner is a bit heavy on the treble, and the drummer lacks any sort of jazzy improvisational skills, but given that these mechanical horrors have no ability to feel joy during this holiday season, they do a pretty solid job in recreating the song.

If anything, this serves as a reminder that even broken down technology can find a purpose spreading joy and cheer to its fleshy human masters. Which, in itself, is a reflection of the message of the song; that regardless of one's social standing, monetary wealth or value to humanity as a whole, we all have something to contribute to the world.

Am I stretching to find meaning for this clip? Absolutely, but it's in the spirit of the season, so anyone who disagrees with me is a godless heathen.

Happy holidays everyone!

Ugh, the one Christmas song that I hate is Little Drummer Boy. Onomatopoeia is fine, but that song rapes the dog with it. There also was no drummer at the Nativity, so this song was probably made in the 1960s to make some rock n roll drummer feel special.

Oh sure, first they play our songs...

Next they'll be taking our jobs, then our women!
We don't need to worry about the latter, chances are their little black books will just contain a list of Sarah Connors.

Granted, being named Sarah Connor will probably suck.

I'm not particularly religious but I don't think there were any musicians at the nativity. It was Mary, Joseph, the wise men and some barn animals, to my recollection. Unless your referring to like choirs of angels and what not. and if that is the case who says angels can't play drums.

Pretty much, except the 3 wise men didn't come until two years later. I was about to say that Jesus did not associate with any kind of musicians in particular, but I don't quite know the Bible that well to say so.

"Are you trying to tell me that my God was born in a barn?"

"Well, yeah. He was."
