Poke: Easy Cheating at Most PC Games

One altruistic programmer has released a free program for manipulating any PC title into letting players edit game data.

Poke [http://codefromthe70s.org/poke.asp], a freeware release from developer Márton Anka, could open the PC gaming world to frustrated or bored gamers everywhere with its simple ability to manipulate a game's memory.

The software, which was originally a paid program and has been recently offered for free, exploits the random access memory (RAM) every program running on a computer uses to store temporary information. Programs store pieces of data in the RAM; for games, this would include the number of bullets in a gun or the amount of money a Sim has in his pocket.

Using a straightforward interface, players can pause mid-game, submit the value of whatever information they're attempting to edit, watch as Poke digs through the game's RAM and changes the stats so the gamer is fully funded with Simoleons or armed to the teeth with unlimited ammunition.

Poke works with most computer games from the past, present and future, as long as the software uses RAM to store constantly changing and heavily used numbers. It only applies to single-player games, disallowing any questionable cheating in online games. The entire tool is squeezed into a tiny 170 kilobyte download [http://codefromthe70s.org/poke.asp], making it an easy install even for those put off by the idea of dealing with RAMs, integers and impassable boss fights.

These programs are old, numerous, and most games are designed in such a way to avoid being beaten by these. I guess it might help with some single-player games but don't expect it to work on a multiplayer one.

It's like a game genie, or game shark. Nice.

Well, it does say that it is not made for multi player games and will only work for single player ones.

Uhh, this is defiantely not new, as said above. There are tons of 'better' programs out there...
And quite simply, that type of program will work on virtually ANY single player game. (Trust me, I know! :p)
Multi-player though, it won't. Because all the data 'like health/ammo/ect' is all stored on the servers memory, and not yours...
Though, if you were hosting a lan.... :p

And while I have never participated in a lan, I knew people who did, and one person mentioned that while at a lan, someone was 'hacking' there just to F**K with people!
Mind you, they were playing CS 1.6, I believe the guy was basically running 2 instances of the game, one with a hack bot, and him playing on the other one, just to screw with the other team. It was a funny story at the time, and mann... If it were a non-serious lan, it could be a hella funny prank to pull. ;)

Seriously, ever heard of ArtMoney? That's another software that I've been using for ages, does the same thing. I use that to edit values in Dwarf Fortress (best pseudo-ASCII game ever, by the by). But you need to be careful with those, you can crash your game pretty easily.

Also, to cleverlymadeup, why in the world would you sue someone over that? It's not like there's anything a player can do from it that would have a negative impact on the revenue of a game publisher.

It all started with Cheat O Matic in grade school, WinHack in high school and ArtMoney all the way after that (AM is insane, you can search for all kinds of data, including numbers stored in memory in reverse and text, and you can even save and re-use found values for games that keep shifting them around in memory). Seriously, programs (and methods) like these have been around since Doom 95. There are even things called "trainer makers", with which anyone can make a trainer for any game, so this article is almost like introducing GameFAQs "for when you're stuck".

Haven't managed to cheat in Fallout 3 yet though (no normally attainable carrying capacity would ever be enough for me :p).

Bahh, cheating is for the weak.

And I really hate those 12 year olds who want to hack a multiplayer server and ruins everybody`s experience. They should be put to sleep, permanently.

In this case, it enabled you to skip to any screen in the original, Bug Byte release of Manic Miner.
Do I still get that cookie even though I used google or is that cheating? ^^

Way way way old... my friend. in 92 I was using one to crack the dnd characters stats to 25's (on max of 25 days in 2nd ed,not this 58 max foolishness)

Unlimited cash, health...You put in life 100, get shot, tell it to compare and search. I got shot it went to 90, get hit again, by search 4 your done...all trainers and cheats are based off alot of these programs.

And oddly it helped me in coding in my younger days. Play through it one fair, then cheat your brain out for fun.

These programs were made before multiplayer existed.
Still I used to make my own in games like Civ 1 where the computer cheated anyway.

There is no excuse for multiplayer cheating other than to show just how baddly you do suck...

but does it work for diablo 2? I don't like diablo's progression or my inability to murder people with hundreds of teeth.

Unfortunately the only character editors i've found work WITH the game, and wont give me superpowers without pretending i've beaten the game before
