Bastion 2 Not Happening Any Time Soon

Bastion has done really well, but Supergiant Games is moving on to a new, unrevealed project instead of a sequel.

Bastion was the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9060-Bastion-Review>surprise darling of this summer. Thankfully, gamers realized this and the game has now sold more than 500,000 times. Despite this success, the game's developer isn't working on a sequel.

Supergiant Games' Greg Kasavin recently spoke to Eurogamer about his company's plans for the future. Even though Bastion was a commercial and critical hit, the studio doesn't have any plans to continue milking that particular cow:

"Thankfully Bastion has performed well enough to give us the resources to create another game on our own terms, meaning we can self-fund the project and take the time we need to get it right."

...

"We always intended for Bastion to be a stand-alone game though we did aim to create a rich world for it that could potentially support other stories.

"I don't know if we'll ever go back to the world of that game, though if we do it will be at a time when the team wants to do that more than anything else. It can't just be a financially motivated decision because that's not how Bastion was created in the first place.

I can't say I'm upset to hear this. Bastion was utterly enchanting, but the ending was definite enough that I'm fine with Supergiant Games leaving things alone until they feel that they really have another story to tell in that universe. In the meantime, I'm sure that whatever the developer's next project is will be something to be proud of.

Thank our bee lords for that. I'm just starting Bastion after I got it in the Steam Holiday Sale. I like the game and was actually just thinking and reading around the Internet about the possibility of a sequel, since Bastion 2 really doesn't sound right. Glad to hear these artists will remain artists.

I am sort of glad about this. but another part of me wants there to be a another game. of course it probably won't be as good as the first....so nevermind.... The ending of this one was the first time that a game really made me shed a "single manly tear".

Considering the ending (plus the whole last level, to be honest) was the only part of the story I unambiguously liked, I can't say I'm upset by this.

...though I do hope they reuse and refine some of the gameplay elements for their next games, because I had absolutely no complaints about those.

Good. Just beat it now myself. This game doesn't need a sequel. Not because it's bad, but because it's amazing, and has an actual ending.

It simply does not need a sequel, and I'm glad this game got so successful so that Supergiant can do their own thing.

If it did have a sequel, I feel like they'd need to change genres entirely. I would totally be down for spending more time in that world, but for true success I think they'd have to do what Yahtzee's emphasized in the past---forget everything about the previous game and try something new.

Bastion was the first game in a while where I went "wait--I'm near the end? NO, NO, DON'T GO, I WANT TO SPEND MORE TIME HERE." For this, I will request a sequel. Politely. You know, when the time's right.

As much as I do want another Bastion game... I'm certainly not gonna ask for one.

Too many good games are tarnished by bad sequels, I'm gonna follow SuperGiant games though, I forsee more great things if they're really going by "These are the games we want to make, profits be damned we're making these games!"
The best games seem to sprout from these sorts of people :p

Good. And if they do make a sequel eventually (give it a couple years at least) it needs to be another story. This one's done. But you could go the Bioshock Infinite route.

Much more respect for Supergiant games now. I would not like the idea of unnecessary sequels. I look forward to whatever else they make.

Good. Bastion had a definite, brilliant ending (and entire last level, especially depending on what you choose) and I wouldn't want that tarnished by a sequel.

However, my respect for this random company I'd never heard about 'til I got Bastion in the Steam Christmas Sale has sky-rocketed immensely because of it. I will very closely look at anything they do in the future, if not buy it on principle.

I wouldn't be so crude, but I share the sentiment. Bastion put some nice cutesy visuals with "the voice," but forgot the most important part -- game play that's not clunky and unresponsive. I can't tell you how many times I pushed the "shield" button and experienced major lag, assuming the shield popped up at all.

And storywise, I played through the game twice just to see if the second ending was any better, and I still have very little idea what was actually going on. I get that the world(or at least the local area) was devastated by something-or-other backfiring, but they never explain why the ground rises up at your character's feet. What's so special about him that his mere presence can sorta-restore the lost world? WE DON'T KNOW.

It got so much praise that I really wanted to like it. But it was just not good. Such a huge disappointment. So no sadness for lack of a sequel here.

YES! Thank you! That game does not need a sequal! It will be remembered as a once-in-a-life-time-experience and that's exactly what it deserves. Not a silly franchise.

Bastion 2 would be a horribad idea. Good thing indie devs don't suffer from sequelitis.

Good riddance, it was the first RPG/Casual that actually bored me. I can't believe critics preferred it to From Dust; but opinions...
I suppose one thing I would like to see more to add surrealism to games was the narration style, how he narrated everything you did but in the past-tense. That was something I would pat the devs on the back about. But aside from that the gameplay and story bored me.

I also hated Dead Island & Borderlands. What's wrong with me?!!?

Why does this sound like a big surprise, releasing a good game should not result in a sequal. Why would you want to limit yourself to one IP.
If remember corectly super giant started up they wanted to be one of those small developers that makes great small games.
There could be a bastion 2 but not for a good while, Come to think of it I am not even shore how a sequal would work without doing something like the same plot just a different carracter and different levels. Unless the bastion does other things...but no I do not want a bastion 2 the one we got is good and I look farward to the next world super giant creats for us.
