Sadly, Master Chief Will Not Be Seen In Street Fighter X Tekken

We came this close to watching Marcus Fenix punch a farting bear in the snout.

Weird headline, right? Is it any weirder to hear that it almost happened?

Apparently, Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono's original plan for the game would have seen the title feature big-name exclusive fighters in each of its various iterations. The Sony versions have them. The firm's feline mascots, Toro and Kuro, appear in the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions of the game, alongside the wildly generic, superhuman protagonist from Sucker Punch Productions' inFamous series.

Yet the Xbox 360 version of the game strictly features fighters from Capcom and Namco Bandai. Why? Because Microsoft and Capcom couldn't come to a timely agreement on who should make a special cameo appearance.

"We do have the exclusive characters for the Sony platform. We have Cole, the two Sony cats, Kuro and Toro. But basically for the Xbox 360, we were in discussions with [Microsoft] for which character to put in as an exclusive, but we weren't able to decide on a character because of differences in timing and things like that," Ono told Xbox360Achievements.com.

"So unfortunately for Street Fighter X Tekken, only the PlayStation family will be getting the exclusive characters, but it's something we wish could have happened. It's just too bad, basically."

When asked which characters the Xbox 360 iteration might have featured, Ono name-dropped some of the biggest characters of recent years.

"In terms of characters we wish we could have put in the game, Master Chief or Marcus Fenix from Gears of War would have been really cool, but it was just really difficult," Ono said.

Would Master Chief or Fenix have been a silly gimmick? Most likely, but let's be honest, in a game like this, that blatantly refuses to take itself seriously, they could have worked. If nothing else, those two may have served to entice a lot of Xbox 360 fans to pick up a title they might otherwise ignore in favor of the latest first-person shooter.

Sad news for those of us who enjoy beating the stuffing out of newbies to inflate our fragile egos, huh?

I'm sorry, I thought the game was called Street Fighter X Tekken, not Outdated Genre Needs to Retire Gracefully and Stop Milking Other Franchises.

You want to watch Master Chief punching stupidly annoying candy-colored mascots? Play Halo and pistol-whip some Grunts.

They could always be added as some free DLC or something like that. I mean, come on Microsoft, you're letting Sony corner the fighter fans since their version has more characters.

this is the second time Sony has exclusive characters in a fighting game, Kratos in Mortal Kombat anyone? I'm feeling that Microsoft just doesn't want to have exclusives, I'd like to see RAAM in Mortal Kombat as he would have fitted the game perfectly.

Meh, it would definitively be a silly move to sell more copies, like the failed attempt Microsoft did with Sega's Mario Kart clone by including Banjo. Also, I fail to see neither Master Chief, nor Marcus Fenix as serious characters to play competitively. They would've made more sense in Mortal Kombat (as if anything in that game made any sense), but not in a "serious" and "competitive" game like Tekken vs SF.

What's this? Microsoft childishly clinging to their assets so tightly that it actually hurts everyone involved? Shocking!

I'm surprised they didn't just say "Master Chief, now." It would have been good for a little more publicity for Halo 4.

Not surprised that Fenix is a no-go though, considering that Gears of War is done (unless there are plans I haven't heard of, that isn't a series I follow).

Didn't they already use a Halo Spartan in Dead or Alive 4 as a hidden fighter anyway?

Or has everybody forgotten about that?

Tecmo owns Dead or Alive. Namco-Bandai does not, nor does Capcom.

Why isn't Ezio in this game?! :tf:

Well how inappropriate to even consider John and Marcus in this game! As if it wasn't stupid enough to put Pac-Man into the vita version >.<

Uhhh...sadly?

Yeah, that IS a weird title. Look, 95% of the people who will buy Street Fighter x Tekken will buy it to, well, watch Street Fighter and Tekken characters beat the living crap out of each other. Few will say "Fuck that, I wanna play as Master Chief/Marcus Fenix!"

Same thing with the Sony cats and Cole (And this is still news to me). They're already there, but do we really need them?

See, I was fine with a few flash cameos at first because it was crazy, yet innovative. Link in Soul Calibur, Okay, I guess that's new. Yoda and Darth Vader? Um...alright, I'll roll with it. Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat? Wait, what? Why? Ezio? Cole? Kratos?!

I think it's about time fighting games stop doing that "It's a-me, a Cameo!" act. It's getting pretty old. If anything, may I suggest just doing a mash-up fighting game with all the characters in the world? Much a-la Smash Bros? Or even MvC? Hey, at least MvC respects its limits (Only Marvel and Capcom character) despite the amount of new characters added to the roster.

Come on, we've talked about it. A SSB game by Sony? Or Microsoft? You know it would sell.

Maybe Microsoft knows that porting a FPS character into a fighting game isn't going to make those FPS fans buy one of these boring fighting games.
Well, that is certainly some impressive petulant narrow-minded affection for videogame genres.

Would either of you like to rail against the concept of the "action RPG," or maybe go back in time and burn down Interplay before it could publish Carmageddon?

While not a fighting game, the PS3 got Joker in Arkham Asylum, too. PS3 gets all the cool stuff.

Yeah, but it wasn't Master Chief.

I hope that irony was intentional. *Smirk*

I don't even like Halo, but I know the Master Chief has better things to do than prop up a genre that was getting Rolling Stones jokes before the Rolling Stones. Hey, maybe you could fight Don Dumpster in Street Fighter X Tekken? As a krogan! In front of Disneyland! Once you've played through game mode "X" 30 times with your left hand to unlock Don, of course, and you can only play him in survivor mode.

Because the fundamental flaws of a genre that have lost all relevance since the end of the arcade era in the 1990's can be ignored if players can finally decide if Master Chief can beat up Marcus Fenix outside of fan-fiction forums, right? That would freshen up the genre, right? Right?
