A Few Ways You Can Fail in Alien: Isolation

SEGA shows us some of the horrific ways you're likely to fail and die in Alien: Isolation.

other Alien games we've recently played [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/alien%20isolation]. The game focuses primarily on the Xenomorph, and your goal is to avoid it as much as possible. Anything you do can set it upon you, and SEGA is making sure to showcase all the different ways you can fail.

The "How Will You Survive?" series, which has six videos so far, details the interesting ways the Xenomorph can track you down, and how simple yet scary walking down an empty hallway can be. In the latest video, "Nowhere is Safe," Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda is in an adjacent room observing the alien through a glass pane. As the alien walks away, Amanda is likely taking a sigh of relief, but then sees the alien walk near a door that automatically opens. The Xenomorph catches her within its sights.

It was nice while it lasted, Amanda.

Other entries in the series show how Vents are also not your friend [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7fFy_vzfdQ]. The short trailers definitely demonstrate how important it is in the game to be astute and aware of your surroundings.

Alien: Isolation is set to release on October 7th.

My god...they know how to use doors!? D:
I'm really interested in how this game goes, especially since my LP of Colonial Marines left such a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to the Aliens franchise.

The more I see of this, the more it feels like Amnesia but with an Aliens aesthetic. Not that there's anythin wrong with that and obviously Amnesia wasn't the first game to have that sort of vibe, but its the first one I think of nowadays.

I...

I don't know if I'll be able to buy this game, let alone play it. That's just... YIKES.

(Though the death scenes look like they could get repetitive.)

One thing I don't like, and I know I'm splitting hairs: the Alien's footsteps. Yes, it's a seven foot tall monster with a big head and tiny feet, but making it stomp around like that doesn't seem right. The Alien was supposed to be silent and ambush its prey. I don't mean make it impossible to detect the alien, but having loud clanging footsteps follow it around seems to miss the point.

Not saying it will be a bad game, but I'm still not impressed enough to buy it even if it is the first good thing out of the Aliens franchise in over a decade (still waiting for AVP2 to hit Steam). I'm not a survival horror fan, so I'll say it has too much darkness. That worked in the movies, but in a game I'd like a little more light.

Yeah, that's bugging me, too. The loud steps in this video kinda (not very much, though) make sense since the xeno saw her see it and knew to move fast, but in most of the other videos it's less subtle than Jason Vorhees, Freddy Kruger, and a chainsaw revving Leather face fused into one lumbering, one-liner-spewing monster. Jeesh, even in the first movie, the creature was calm enough to move slowly closer to Lambert while she screamed bloody murder and Parker screamed from across the room. It didn't even go after Ripley when she ran into it while trying to get to the shuttle. It went to take a nap and try again later.

What happened to "nothing is scarier"? The loud galloping just tells me I'm gonna be watching a (possibly repetitive and) gory cutscene and reload at a checkpoint. Making the player think the coast is clear only to kill them a few seconds later is more truer to the spirit of the franchise.

I'm still not feeling this game. It's just you walking around with an Alien running after you. They might aswell just put a tiger there; Sure you don't want it to get you, but it's hardly a spine-chilling experience.

I'm going to wait until this has been out for a while before I buy it, preorder dlc notwithstanding. I just don't trust Sega anymore nor games based on Alien

I really, really hope this is good. I won't be buying it immediately, but it sounds like a game I'd love.

So, downplaying the human enemies are we?

Though if I could somehow anger the xenomorph, lead it to the human baddies, and let them duke it out I'd be pretty happy.

She's a clever girl ;)

OT: I'm in "skeptical enthusiasm" with this one, it looks like something I'd definitely enjoy, multiple times even, BUT... yeah, it's sad when I need to be in constant skepticism, too many dissapointments in the last few years, including this year too :/

Still pretty pissed about the pre-order DLC, the lack of decent horror games makes me watch closely anything that looks promising these days. If I had massive disposable income getting a PS4 just for Silent Hills would be considered.

Hopefully, the knowledge of everything that went wrong with Colonial Marines positively informed the developers of Isolation of what NOT to do in an Alien game. We can't know either way until the game has been out for proper reviews. I bet Jim is going to tackle this one, so we'll get a review with the proper balance of criticism and fun seeking.
