This may be off topic, but hell it was a problem that bugged the crap out of me for a while, and it kinda sorta has to deal with gaming.

First off let me say that I remain a proud PC gamer despite the lack of titles for the PC. My own PC is far more powerful (and less buggy) than an Xbox 360 or a PS3. That said... I did encounter a problem.

For those of you running windows XP with a high end sound card you may have noticed that in some games (or all of them) that the game no longer registers voice acting. For those of you really paying attention this came after installing directx 9c. To fix this problem all you have to do is type dxdiag, and set hardware acceleration down to 'basic'. Then it works... however this can induce a bug known as ping storming, which will crash your games and the fix is to raise hardware acceleration... Have fun with that.

For vista users who have the same problem, and tried the whole dxdiag thing you may have noticed that vista no longer has hardware acceleration. I certainly did and exhausted hours on google trying to find a fix, before hitting upon a lesser known forum which suggested several things. I myself began doing diagnostic testing, and to make a long story short... you need to uninstall whatever custom driver is associated with your sound card, and allow microstupid to use it's generic HD audio device.

To accomplish this simply right click 'my computer' -> select manage -> select device manager -> find your audio device and right click that -> select 'uninstall' -> reboot your pc. NOTE: if you do not reboot your pc and instead 'scan for hardware changes' it'll just reinstall the previous broken driver and make you want to shove glass in your eyes, cause now you have to restart twice to fix it all. And I'm not going to help you with that.

Oh and before I get flamed for this, posting a fix when no one asked for help, I'm posting this on a popular gaming site (which oddly doesn't have a 'fix it' area) and I'm putting in googleable terms in this post in the vague hope that others will find this useful when doing their own google search for this odd happenstance.
