A Game to Restore My Faith in Games?

I own a PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, PSone and Gameboy Advance.
Any games you folks could suggest? I want a GOOD game to help me out in these dark times, one that might even restore faith in my favourite pastime.

I have but one parameter: Only games that are available for these aforementioned systems count.
Oh, and no PC games please - unless they are incredibly lightweight and/or free. The reason being that my Samsung Netbook simply cannot play even the most basic of titles, for it sucks.

All that being said, fire away! Just make sure to include the platform(s) for which your game is available, thanks.

Depends on what you are looking for. Outright and unapologetic fun? Power or predatory fantasy? Cathartic story?
Any and all.
Just a game that you think someone should play, one that stands out for whatever reason. Heck, it can even be a remarkably BAD game if you want. As long as you think it would leave a POSITIVE impact on the gamer once they walk away from it.
Like I said, as long as it's available on PS3, PS2, PS1, Xbox 360 or Gameboy Advance then anything goes.

I haven't. What console is it on?

PC. Planescape: Torment is an RPG from 1999, so I guarantee you that your computer can run it.

It's an unforgettable game. And very highly acclaimed. [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/planescape-torment]

for the PS3 I have the perfect recommendation:

Journey

<youtube=_mF8KkDiIdk>

<youtube=7QC4dksgiIY>

you can DL the demo to see if it's for you
In my opinion, it was my 2012 GOTY.

Appreciate the suggestion but I already have this game. FLower's better in my opinion.

Hmm

How about the first three spyro games for the PSone? the gameplay is a bit dated, but still holds up well as a platformer.

FOR PC

Deus ex:hr, the walking dead, anarchy reigns (with friends), spec ops the line, bastion, bioshock infinite, driver: San Francisco, Lara croft: guardian of light (coop), ICO, shadow of the colossus, Okami, infamous/2, sleeping dogs, limbo, batman: Arkham asylum/city, super meat boy, portal 1/2, red dead redemption, far cry 3, just cause 2, the witcher 2, braid, resident evil 4
FOR CONSOLES

I'll edit in this post if I can think of other titles. Your criteria is a bit vague, and I don't know what you've played already, so uhh sorry if those games seem all over the place. Also, I don't really know if you're willing to tolerate emulations on your consoles.

Edit: oh wait, you've got a GBA too. New list incoming:

Castlevania: aria of sorrows + harmony of dissonance, final fantasy tactics, tales of phantasia, golden sun, fire emblem
FOR GBA

Those games were my childhood. Terrific suggestion, though.

Awesome, I'll buy it on The Pirate Bay right away.
You can buy things on the pirate bay? Uhhh...

Anyway, Ninja Gaiden Black can be played on the xbox 360 but you might need to download some kind of patch (I did). Best game ever! No bias whatsoever!
Those animations are so nice, mmmmmmmmmm. I now have a hankering for some ninja action.

you know its not exactly espensive its on £10 on amazon, no need to pirate it at all, not to mention people are often punished on this forum for saying they will pirate

OT without saying what games you have tried and what sort of games you would like to try its difficult to recommend

Emulate? On consoles? What do you mean?
Older retro stuff like streets of rage (from sega genesis) or crazy taxi (from dreamcast) are available on stuff like the PSN and xbla. They're not ports, technically, they run virtually on your machine through emulation. I can't explain it well in technical terms (think of it as your PS3 trying to run the exact same programming code with all the inefficiencies and restrictions of an older machine, but on a system that wasn't made for it), but what this means is the game is not very optimized and might have a few issues running on your machine like frame drops or unresponsive somewhat laggy controls. This is not always true, and generally how well the game tends to run feels... kind of random, honestly.

It's a deal breaker for some, but barring piracy or overpriced eBay auctions, you're not likely to be able to play those games on modern machines without emulations.

Unless you want older PC games, which gog has done a fantastic job of being able to run on newer PCs.

Hmmm... Gameboy Advance, eh?

Why not play Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga... It's an RPG (akin to Super Mario RPG) with Mario and... well... Luigi[footnote]Although there is a run-on joke involving no one actually knowing Luigi's own name...[/footnote]... It's a fun little gem that basically jump-started the "Mario & Luigi" series... and it shows...

And since you do have a PS3, if you want a good (recent) platformer, why not try out Rayman Origins? In my opinion, I find it to be better than some of the more recent Mario platformers with a really decent challenge that doesn't punish you as much as what a Mario platformer would do[footnote]You see, Rayman Origins has the "no-lives" system, yet if you die you always start off at the last place you entered during the level... and never at the beginning... unless you died in the first section of the level, that is...[/footnote]... (Also, every character speaks in Pig Latin...)

Overall, a Mario RPG for the GBA and a Rayman platformer for the PS3... You can't go wrong with either one... especially with both of those game's humor...

You probably already have/had these, but what the hey.

Xbox/PS2 Era:

[li]Simpsons Hit and Run for Xbox/360 backwards compatible, also on PS2. Best Simpsons game ever.[/li]

[li]Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. This is the very first Mercenaries game. Recommend Xbox version, 360 backwards compatible.[/li]

[li]Sid Meier's Pirates: Xbox, 360 BC. Just a fun little game with a couple of mini-game concepts integrated. It has a beginning and an end. And isometric ship warfare! Totally worth it.[/li]

[li]Ghost Recon: The first one. Even played on easy, this game may surprise you with the AI. Frankly, it's the only Ghost Recon game I enjoyed playing. Choose up to six team members with any combination of riflemen, machine gunners, snipers, and combat engineers. And you *GASP* actually get to control them individually! What a strange and alien concept![/li]

[li]Burnout 3: Takedown. Surely you must have played this already. It's a shame to think that only back then did we get to load music onto a console and play it in-game. Oh, and I highly recommend not driving in real life after an extended play session. Things get...twitchy.[/li]

Current Era:

[li]Beyond Good and Evil HD. I already have this on disc for Xbox. I bought it again digitally for PS3 in a pointless attempt to send Ubisoft a message. Aside from one camera glitch in the sewers, the game was flawless.[/li]

[li]Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena (360/PS3). Yeah, the graphics look dated even in the updated version, but this game was just so...visceral. Tilt the camera down and--holy crap, my character actually has legs! Get into a fist fight, escalate into fights with contraband ice picks and--oh Jesus, I just stabbed that guy in the eye six or seven times. I love this game.[/li]

[li]Crackdown for 360. You've probably already played the first Crackdown. If not, then you, sir, are wrong.[/li]

Psychonauts.

Why does no-one mention Psychonauts?
I'll let Yahtzee explain

It's funny. It's art. It's a classic. It will restore your faith in the medium.

I second that recommendation, with the condition that it be played on Original Xbox/360 backwards compatible, or downloaded for 360. OP, since you have a netbook, I'd stick with a 360 download instead. For $10 you can't go wrong.

I'm not one of those types who goes for graphics over game play, but in the case of Psyconauts, if you're playing it on PS2, you're missing out on a complete experience simply because the graphics are very fuzzy. Even the digital download version on Playstation Network is non-HD and doesn't measure up. As someone who has three versions (on disc for Original Xbox, PC, and PS3 download), I have to recommend it for 360.
