I haven't studied haikus since high school. I expect this thread will drop far very quickly because it calls for active thought rather than off-the-cuff answers, but who knows? Maybe it will catch on! ^_^

Remind me of the rules for haikus, please.

Normally they're poems of three lines and a set number of syllables, 17 total, traditionally arranged 5-7-5. Bonus points for referencing seasons in some way. Seasons of the year mind you, not salt & pepper.

OT:
Hippopotamus
Will he sink or will he swim?
Hippopotamus

Also, actual 18th century (IIRC) Japanese haiku:
Waga oya no
Shinuru toki ni mo
He o kokite

(Even as my father
Lay dying
I farted.)

Just a monster here
On the internet, typing
Slower with just hooks.

I never got these
Haiku, why is it so great?
Poetic format.

Like Shakespeare's Sonnets
They follow a set of rules
Are they different?

I have yet to see
Haiku, layered like Donne's writings
But they contemplate.

Things like life and death.
Seasons, animals, humans
But sometimes just farts.

My last haiku sucked
But it still was a classic.
People have no taste.

Now I write some more
With originality.
Still these are easy.

Haiku is an art?
It is just basic counting.
Yet it's poetic.

Now I take my leave,
As it is a little late.
I will be back soon.

Forum Games are fun
Procrastination and stuff
I should be working.

Buskers playing songs
Same songs over and over
Hit them with a rock.

This is my Friday
I am off rest of the week
Planning to be drunk.

A snip to save space,
But it is still a haiku.
I do not break rules.
A blurry-faced man,
Confused on the day of week.
Or just got days off.

Is the blur a sign?
When drunk, vision is blurry.
Or is it deeper?

His life is blurry,
He can't make out distinct shapes...
I guess he is drunk.

Now to bide my time,
To wait for the perfect post
To make my reply.

I have spent much time.
contemplating this haiku.
I must wait to share.

I snip this post too
Because it's the thing to do
More haikus to plan.
Flattering poems
Written by a paramour
That was nice of him

See username sucks
Avatar is angry man
Don't know what he's from.

Mr Username Sucks
Where is your avatar from?
I simply must know.

Where did this thread go?
I could not find it in list
Had to go through quote.

These are my days off
Might watch Apocalypse Now
And play Papers, Please.

Ok let do this.
So we have to speak like this?
It is not that hard.

Delivery come.
A film, soundtrack and a book.
Time to read that book.

What "active thinking"?
These come to me like girlfriends...
(If they were haikus...)

Snip of the ages
To never be forgotten,
Unless this thread dies
"Angry man" avatar
Not actually angry
Just a true badass.

King of explosions,
AND EXCESSIVE USE OF CAPS!
A true gentleman.

Let me introduce,
Here now, from Borderlands 2,
He is MR. TORGUE!

Now I wait once more
To post my true masterpiece.
Need the right moment.

Till Sunday I wait,
For then I will have returned.
Don't let this thread die.

Fear my magic card,
Blue Eyes power increases,
Your end has arrived

Eyes like a forest,
Hair like a brilliant ember,
Her beauty unmatched

A axe forgotten,
A button not to be pressed,
A bomb ass hype throw

Reading these Haikus,
I wish to play Borderlands,
Zero is the best

A lone starved wolf hunts,
Without a pack for guidance,
Surely it will die

Dry like the desert,
My mouth yearns for some water,
I am so thirsty

The Escapist is,
Like a beacon to the great,
No trolls are here

The nights far too warm,
The days burn like a furnace,
I hate the sun forever

Faniction is good,
Though you must search for the greats,
Misspellings abound

All these Hiakus,
Each tell a different tale,
I like writing them

Gah, you are all fools.
I leave for four days, thread dies.
Thread,rise from your grave!

I was biding time,
But I will wait no longer
For a post to quote!

Fine, I guess I'll wait.
My masterpiece needs context.
Get posting, people!

I have returned here
For I was away a few days
But now I am back.

I feel I should write
Something about recent events
But I'm dishevelled.

As Zen predicted
This thread is rather fragile.
It won't last that long.
