A Movie Adaptation of We Happy Few is Coming

Try not to overdose on Joy.

We Happy Few, the first-person dystopian survival game from Compulsion Games, is still in Early Access, but that hasn't stopped anyone from deciding that the title already deserves a movie adaptation.

As reported by Variety [http://variety.com/2017/film/news/we-happy-few-videogame-movie-adaptation-1202020558/], Compulsion has partnered with Pitch Perfect Producer Gold Circle Entertainment and dj2 Entertainment (producer of the recently announced Sleeping Dogs movie) to bring the game to the big screen.

Guillaume Provost, head developer at Compulsion Games, said that the studio was approached "enthusiastically with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film while retaining its menace, dark humor, and central themes."

"Our commitment is to make a movie that remains true to the source material, while still surprising fans," said dj2 Entertainment CEO Dmitri M. Johnson.

There's no estimated release for the movie, but Compulsion stated on Twitter [https://twitter.com/CompulsionGames/status/848026752232378368] that "these things take years," adding that we "will see the game way before the movie comes out."

Guys, finish your candy bar before opening another one.
I was just about to say the exact same thing. Plus this is a early access game.

They do say adaption is the key to survival, clearly Hollywood thought that meant adapt various forms of media into movies. Close enough?

Uh....hated it? Not really. He just said that the survival meters seriously needed to be tweaked. And one of the first updates right after he made his video about that, was to do just that. He likes the game, he just thought that it needed to be adjusted, and he sure as hell didn't hate it.

I am not opposed to it. We Happy Few works better as a concept than as a game, as evidenced by all the people that lost interest once it was revealed that it was a survival game (like The Forest) instead of a first person narrative driven game (like Bioshock) and, unlike other video game adaptations, there is a lot of free room for a movie, instead of being restricted by following the game narrative.

I think a lot more than what we got in the game can be done with the setting... besides, this means absolutely nothing in terms of feasibility; many games sell the movie rights, even before release, and most of those projects never get pass pre-production (remember the MGS, Half Life and Dante's Inferno movies?... exactly)

This is definitely a case where a movie is actually a much better idea for the setting than the game is. While they do promise story at the end of early access, I doubt it will make up for the repeating randomly generated survival parts.

Reminds me of when they announced a movie deal for MN9 before the game was even out. I wonder if they're still going ahead with it after that game's meh reception. Whats even more absurd is that this is an early access game, the fact they're trying to make a movie out of it, just shows how Hollywood and this developer are full of it.

Apparently the newest update has a choice of modes, the easiest of which drops the survival meters entirely and the hardest of which makes it even more brutal. At least, that's what I gathered from the video put out by the games creators.

Hopefully that fixes some of the balance issues. I'm waiting for the full release regardless before I even consider buying. Some games work well even in beta, but this isn't one of them.

I'm pretty sure a drug dependent society with a dark side movie has been done before so I'm not sure how you can surprise people by doing another one.

It has movie potential. There is a niche that it would fill neatly if presented gracefully. But what about releasing the game on other platforms first?

Now if they can totally separate the survival meters from other difficulty settings i'll buy this but i don't want a ludicrously easy experience in every other part of the game just to get rid of those wretched meters...

Yeah, I'm hoping they can pull a good game out of what they have but from I've seen they still have a ways to go with balance.

I really want to see something akin to a single player campaign ALA bioshock/dishonored rather then the apparently rougelike/random generated environment survival game it appears to be, but we'll see. Maybe once it hits full release it'll be worth it, maybe not.

I have to agree, that's pretty much what i was hoping this game was going to be first time i heard about it
