My partner dying was the one that did it for me. Sure put some things into perspective.

Also surviving a really abusive relationship (not with the same person as the one who died) changed me in many ways for the better.

Near-death experiences have taught me that you can't take anything in this world for granted, and you better cherish what you have. It could be gone tomorrow.

Rio Grande river trips all of them that I've been on, from getting 'lost', to dragging the damn canoe, to camping in Mexico, to bringing the girls along, to leading the trip, to making the logistics of it

Hunting is another one as well as going fishing alot, plus camping in various desert spots. Learning to fly airplanes.

I watched my grandma die of breast cancer when I was 10. Not fun, but it was the first time I realized just how sad death was. Made things seem depressing for a while since I loved 'er so much, but I think it helped me learn more about life in general.

College jaded me pretty badly. Lost faith in people around me, educational systems and society at large, and myself. Not the best time for me.

I see, I'm sorry for your loss.

I hope things are well with you and everyone else here today atleast.

I'm interested in how people become stronger, because it's something I need to accomplish myself (My life and even my personality is in shambles and I need to "rebuild myself anew" to put it simply ).

I would like to thank everyone so far and my heart goes out to each of you.

This isn't just a sob thread, but a discussion about how things changed your life for the better and led to newer experiences. They can be happy, sad, enlightening, funny ect.

Thanks in advance to future posters.

I am a big proponent of the 'whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger' theory, myself. I didn't die from my experiences, and they taught me a lot that I've used to become the person I am today.

If you ever need to talk, Johan, I'm always here to listen. :)

When my mom started using my brother's epilepsy to push her teetotal beliefs onto him I really learned that I should expect no low to her manipulation. In general, my parents have taught me that everyone is a person first, and shouldn't be put on some pedestal. Thankfully, my sister has kept me from delving into complete cynicism.

When I lost my dad, the ensuing shit-storm taught me that you can't always rely on the people closest to you in life.

Living and dealing with all the crap my mother has made me put up with certainly changed my perspective on life. In a good way actually. It made me realize the effects that your actions have on everyone else.

Almost drowning made me more optimistic than I used to be.
I was about to say the same thing. Needless to say, I'm not ready to take up swimming for awhile (it's been a good ten years) but it's changed my mind about a lot of things.

I guess the major experiences would have been (Besides the aforementioned one):

- My grandfather's passing about three years ago.
- My Canine best friend who died two years ago.
- Graduating from High School.
- Summer Time.
- The Loss and Gain of having a girlfriend.
- Hanging out with my best friends.

There's perhaps a little bit more in the negatives than positives, but it all shapes you in the end.

I've helped bury several friends and relatives, have a large family so I've been to many weddings but I've been to more funerals than I have weddings. One friend was shot and died right in front of me, and one cousin died from an infected stab wound. And I myself have survived death many times so I have great appreciation for everything and I am incredibly thick skinned.
