Hey, what's wrong with Hawk_of_Battle??!! That article is crap! No one's ever had trouble deciphering my name, they can shorten it to Hawk for ease of use and it sounds cool.

Also it's what my real name translates as, which is even more awesome.

Oh and it's fairly original, because I've never once not been able to use it on anything.

I've broken a rule on accident. I didn't realize that so many people had a hard time pronouncing popdafoo until I heard people trying to say it out loud. So then I tried making a name that's easier to pronounce for Xbox Live which is Phage325 and people still have a hard time pronouncing it...

I thank you for these tips. If only everyone would follow them, right?

Crap wait I have a story. I was on MapleStory trying to think of a name. I had gone through every name I could think of, including household objects and extremely obscure gaming references and they had all been taken. So when all else fails, just choose the name JonLovitz. It was the only name not taken.

First, I'd like to say these should be followed not for Aion exclusively, but for any game that requests a named character. Second, allow me to add a fifth and sixth you most likely thought of but forgot:

- No Numbers - It's a name, not a postal code. You're not witty, funny, intelligent, original or anything other than stupid for substituting letters for words. "S4Suk3 - LOLOLGEDIT?", "SASUKE92". Using numbers in your names should carry the death penalty in real life... I guess this is implied in "make it pronounceable", but still.

- It's a name, not a flag. Keep the decorations out ("xXLOLZERXx", "[Onix]", etc). When anyone sees those they don't think "now there's an aesthetically pleasing name!", they think "now there's a 12 year older...".

I'd like to add that you should not use accents on letters in your name. Has anyone here ever tried to /invite a person to a group and spend a few minutes trying to make an Ö. How do you even ask the people around you to type that if you don't know how?

My typical naming gripes are:

1> The special ASCII character. Nothing like trying to type a /tell to someone and finding that the f is actually an ? (Which is Alt + 159).

2> Adding X's or some other letter multiple times. Adding xXx before and after your name doesn't make you cool.

3> Spelling a well known character a slightly different way so you can use that name too. Someone else already used the name Sephiroth, Gandalf, ? Just spell it a bit different. Sephoroth for instance. My aren't you original.

4> Making your name a mis-spelled sentence. Names like 'ikillzu' , 'imdagraytest' , 'ipwnyou' etc.

5> Having a really long name. If your character name is more than 12 characters, I would suggest not using it. It is probably difficult to type or difficult to pronounce.

6> Using 3 or more vowels or consonants in a row. Again, difficult to pronounce.

Now every now and then there are exceptions to these things. For the most part these are the things that bug me the most.

It was always kinda funny...to see my plain real world name ranked higher at the end of the match then "Godsmack" or whatever badass identity people wanted to choose...
R4pt0r_0 was reduced to ashes by Fishcake.
R4pt0r_0 quit the game.

I have a dictionary of botanical names on the shelf that I use now for any character names - they're interesting, and pretty much never taken. It's way easier than trying out phonetics to come out with something cool.
Dionaea is taken. She's an NPC Monster Plant Lover.

Does it bother you when newspapers get bacterium, bacteria, virus, viruses, virion, virions and germs all mixed up, too?

My long-time gaming name (Main_E_ak) breaks some of these rules, namely on being unpronounceable, which is kind of odd given that it's just a regular word spelled differently. Some people shortern it to 'Main', others get caught at the 'E' whilst trying to pronounce the whole thing as it's written. Mind you I did make it when I was playing on dialup so speaking it wasn't an issue, though typing it always has been.

I've been meaning to switch to something easier on the typing/speaking side but at the same time it's been completely unique ever since I started using it nearly 10 years ago now, so I'm loathed to give it up. I also have a fitting habit of living up to that name....

I agree the first one here is just dumb.

But something like SASUKE92... or whatever is pretty much a standard suggestion made by computer systems when a name is already taken.

Go ahead. Try it. Choose some really common name, then see what you get as an alternate suggestion...

Heck, I just use the names Owen or Callister. Somehow, there's always people that can't spell Owen though :/

Nicely done, CFTF. I think the best part was seeing names I actually recognized from a certain gaming session in Aion.

Also, I endorse these rules wholeheartedly and will always be thankful for the ridiculously brilliant naming system they used in Champions.

Huginn. I use names from mythology. All my taunts are from little known series.

Only problem, people pronounce it hug-in.

Don't get me wrong, final fantasy gives me a hardon, but holy crap everyone and their cousin has a onewingedangel or sephiroth or cloud. :p

I write stories and base my names of the names of characters in my stories :p. So someday I'll be extremely unoriginal when I start getting these published.

That's assuming more than my family reads them ;).

Luckily MMO's seem to avoid the name Ultrajoe for some reason, probably heard about my sweet Ultrarage.

Still, I know a druid called Shapeofa. Cool guy, fun name. Owes me a Raven lord.
That name made me smile. reminded me of wonder twins.

I create my character names from scratch. It's a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because the odds of "Balthior" being taken on any given server is pretty slim, but it's a curse because it can sometimes get hard to create names.

Bonus points to anyone who can figure out how I created the above example. Hint: Think alchemy with names.

I've always gone by the name of Tannen. It's surprisingly unique (tends to get used when we're talking over a million users but otherwise is mine for the keeping) and is not referential, borrowed from anywhere or offensive to anyone.

And if you steal it, I'll hunt you down.

Tell me about it. On my server (Vaizel) there's a legion running around called "Mudkipz". IF there is a God they will crash and burn.

As far as names go the worst I've seen are the gold spammers, who aren't even trying when it comes to this kind of thing. I'm pretty sure most of the spammers pick their character names by vigorously headbutting their keyboard. At least it makes it obvious for the GMS who these folks are. They might as well be wearing a scarlet letter or be in fire if they want to stand out any more.

Hey, you, get off my cloud.

Actually I don't have a character called Cloud and as far as I'm concerned Cloud is a My Little Pony.
