Activision Announces Modern Warfare 2 - UPDATED

Call of Duty [http://www.activision.com] wheel, will hit store shelves in November of this year.

Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: World at War [http://www.callofduty.com/CoDMW], but Activision has now confirmed that the follow-up release will be a new Modern Warfare.

"Everyone on the team is laser focused on making the most gripping experience we've ever created," said Infinity Ward [http://www.infinityward.com/] CEO Vince Zampella. "No detail is too small and every finishing touch imaginable is underway to make Modern Warfare 2 our best ever. We can't wait for our fans around the world to play starting November 10th."

One can only wonder how the numbering system is going to work with this one. Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2? Or will Activision follow the World at War trend and forgo the Call of Duty sequel number altogether? I suppose Call of Duty 6² might work but that would lead to no end of confusion when Call of Duty 36 is released. We'll have to see how that plays out.

Modern Warfare 2, as mentioned, is scheduled for release on November 10. In the meantime, more information, which at this point consists of a wholly uninformative trailer, is available at modernwarfare2.com [http://www.modernwarfare2.com]. Well, not entirely uninformative; I'm pretty sure I saw the Cristo Redentor on Corcovado in there...

UPDATE: So much for Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2. VG247 [http://www.vg247.com/2009/03/26/gdc-modern-warfare-2-drops-the-call-of-duty-bit/] reports that Activision has dropped the Call of Duty part of the title completely. The sequel will be called simply Modern Warfare 2.

I think I read somewhere that they may be dropping Call of Duty all together and just calling it modern warfare 2.

Either way I couldn't care less about this game unless they really change a lot of stuff.

This will either be amazing...or terrible. I guess we'll just have to wait and see the fan reaction.

I think a lot of developers and publishers planning to release their games have either "finished early" and are trying to get their game out before November, or are delaying their game for 2 months.

Well, as long as it's being made by Infinity Ward, I've got some optimism.
I agree, but it's going to be hard to make a sequel that lives up to it's predecessor, especially since the first Modern Warfare got such great reviews almost everywhere.

Cant they just use Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 instead of Call of duty 6 or Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare Part 2: It's time to shit rainbows.

Frankly I won't be upset if it only just matches its predecessor. That may be because I don't own its predecessor so I won't notice. Frankly I think a game with this much attention on it will have the developers on edge to at least meet par. Even if it's not good, it's a safe bet that it will do good early on because of how much people loved the first. 5th? XXIVth?

And as i review the final post before this one right before i click post, a brilliant idea hits me. Let's stop numbering our games, and just have ridiculous tag lines on the box. That way we'll force the makers to be original in at least the name of the game. And even the violent games will at least help the memories of the gamers because they'd have to memorize ALL those tag lines for any sort of conversation.

COD 4 is probably one of the best FPS games that has come out for a while, the storyline was gripping and it was good to see a developer mainly portraying a force other than the US, and in such detail as well (The camoflague worn by the SAS forces is British DPM, the current uniform, and the headsets are replicas of PRR headsets used by british forces.) It would be good to see them bring in a few more varied weapons (British SA80's with SUSAT optics, Steyr AUGs for maybe an australian SASR team, M16A1's/AR-15's for a guerrilla force in south america for example)

That's like saying "I prefer cheese pizza that tastes just like regular cheese pizza but looks like it's from the 40's and is made by different people."

Yay, I was kinda hoping they'd drop the CoD name. Without it hopefully those more casual gamers who don't realise it will now know that the CoD games are Treyarch's property, and the Mondern Warfare games are the good ones developed by IW. And dropping the first title worked for the Jedi Knight games when they shifted from Dark Forces.

I like that they dropped the Call of Duty part. It's kind of silly that they juggle a franchise between two people, and the more infinity ward can do to seperate itself from Treyarch is A-OK by me. I'll always know who the real call of duty is anyway.

I was slightly dismayed when the final shot of the trailer showed it would be released on the 11th October, and then I released it was the 10th November, due to the whole 'American date-writing' shenanigans. Cue much jubilation, as it is released on my birthday and during the half-term break of the 09 academic year's winter term. Plenty gaming will be had!

I wonder who they're going to make as the antagonists this time around.
In the teaser trailer, during the lift segment, one of them says, "Remember - no Russian", so I'd assume that the Russians are involved in some way or another. Also, when IW sent out the promo teasers, the file name was "Siberia". Finally, some say the language at the very end of the trailer is Russian, and it says "You cannot have a revolution without a revolutionary state". If the Russians aren't in it, I'd be surprised.
