Back to the doctor thing for a minute: Let's say the Janitors have aaaall disappeared from the hospital, that's a *****, right? But not a game over situation. Anyone could help clean the hospital with a 20 minute crash course, and plenty of people willing to help - Hell, if needs be, the on-call doctors (Or even ones with the day off) could do the cleaning and be paid extra.
But if there were no doctors, no amount of Janitors are going to be able to perform the surgery, prescribe the pills and diagnose the illness.
So your saying that if there were no janitors than they would just hire someone to be a janitor? That logic makes no sense because then there are still janitors. If you are trying to make the point that they are more easily replaced I will agree but if you are saying they are less important I really have to disagree.

Education does not make a job more important it just means it takes more knowledge to do.

Just like a company owner is not more important than his workers because without them nothing gets done they are what makes the operation go sure his job is a one man thing which makes him unique but more important I disagree.
Yes, it's saying they're easily replaced - I didn't say that no-one could ever be a janitor, I said that the current ones disappeared.
The education required for a doctor makes the individual person more important, as few people can do what they can, while many many people can do what a janitor does. Even if anyone can be a doctor, like anyone can be a janitor, the job itself is still more important, as each doctor has great significance to each patient's life.

Another one is that if someone is suffering from a mysterious illness, and a mediocre doctor can't do anything, because they cannot diagnose it, while a fantastic one can, then the potential for the job (As in, when you are really skilled at it, then you can have a very large impact on the world/people) has a wide range. But a really good janitor.. what can he do? Be slightly faster? That job has very low potential.

With your company idea, you're comparing a single man to an entire staff - If that one owner had never been born, then the company would likely not exist now, because it rests solely on him. If he dies, then there's a good chance the whole company goes into turmoil, or goes bankrupt, or simply just suffers a big setback.
But if a single worker was never born, or dies, it really doesn't matter to the company either way.
The owner has great significance and value to the company, which is the very definition of important. The worker has very little.
If the owner of the company dies most times the person below him simply takes over especially in large companies usually it is a bunch of people who all own it and run it. I am arguing about the importance of jobs not the people doing them there is a difference. The work a janitor does is just as important because without the janitor the doctor would be unable to do his job. Also the way our society is set up if doctors were in a low schools would start to push kids to that field just like how they are with trades because of the lack of people going into the trades. So ya the doctor would just get replaced just like the janitor. You want to know why some schooling is so extensive it is to eliminate potential doctors not always to educate them that much more. It is so there aren't to many doctors. Hell my I got friends who have to do extensive schooling to get there job but fact is they are just going to repeating stuff they already learned again in order to eliminate students who can't afford it or deal with the amount of work anymore so the schools can make more money and the work force doesn't get to many because those jobs tend to pay more so more people try for them.

Everyone has cool sounding jobs ¬_¬ I can't make mine sound cool. Working in a bakery, where people think you're a piece of shit because it's one of those jobs that people look down their noses at you for working at. like working at McDonalds, even job-less people think they're better than Maccy D workers. (I may as well go work at McDonalds then!" *sigh*)
It's getting quite depressing actually. Today I had to dash to the back because I randomly broke down crying for no reason. ;-;

Any and all of the following: bookkeeping, marketing, recruitment, sales, admin, IT, support, event management, a little legal, credit control and if I feel like a walk I take the cheques to the bank. A fairly random job, but it will hopefully will look good when I decide to get a more focused one!

There's always going to be a hiccup - And the owner has more significance and value to the company in both the past and future, therefore IS more important. You can't argue that.

Without the single janitor, who gives a damn? Without the single doctor, there's more of a chance that something will change, but it's still pretty low. Each single job is very likely completely un-important in the whole grand scheme.
But if all the janitors disappeared from the world suddenly, it'd be bad, but not a catastrophe (other than losing that amount of people). If all the doctors suddenly disappeared, that WOULD be a catastrophe. Death rate would increase by a huge amount, a lot of knowledge would be lost, it'd be very very hard to train to be a doctor.. Because they're significant in the world, and have a lot of value.

And you're saying that there's just so much schooling, because that way they make more money? Well of course they want to make more money, but that isn't going to be the sole reason. If I'm dying and need a heart operation, I want a surgeon that's gone over everything three damn times, rather than one that's missed out something important!
Also, there are too many doctors. That's a problem. But there aren't too many great ones. There are far too many that were intrigued by having a lot of money and being seen as important. Luckily, most of those people that don't give a flying fuck about the human life and won't put in the extra mile to help someone get pushed out when they realise just how much work is involved, and so go to do something easier with less of an impact on our lives. Something less important.

Are you a 20th century Russian communist? Because you seem to be agreeing with them that everyone's equal and the government/state is just evil, wants all your money and doesn't care about anyone but themselves.. :p

Unemployed, been looking for a job for the last year, getting qualifications that appear to have been useless for the last few years before that.

Right now I don't have a job but I'm searching for one. My main source of income is my dad because as long as I do well in school and stay off drugs he'll give me money when I need it.I'll probably end up joining the Edmonton police Force when I graduate though.
All we three are unemployed! Freakazoid! Freakazoid!

Sorry, couldn't resist... :)

Just finished my MSc, but unemployed. So i feed my habit by borrowing games off of employed friends once they've finished with them! Although I don't always get to play the games i want to, it passes the time inbetween job applications!

I literally just stand around and tell people when it is safe to use the waterslides/make sure they are using them properly. I work as topside patrol in the World Waterpark, not such a great job but it pays money...

I am a Electrical Engineer at Beaver Valley Nuclear Plant, outside of Pittsburgh PA.

I would rather be a Tron: Legacy Imagineer at Disneyland, Florida; or a NPC Simulation GRID Master Programmer...wonder where i could apply for that, better yet how to get investors for my new company.

My average budget is about $240/ year for my gaming hobby. 4 games, so i make sure they are online, replayable with online friends, and worth the money.

This Year's winners so far, Tron: Evolution for $10, BF3 @ $48, Skyrim @$51, and Halo Reach @ $41. I only rent games with free Family Video Game rental coupons :)

I create games as a hobby with Unity 3D and Maya, next frontier is game publishing with the Android Marketplace.

I was a lab assistant. Lab ran out of funding. I was going to probably do a PhD... but seeing so many supervisors lose their jobs because they can't get increasingly rare funding made me realize that just being a scientist is not enough to secure your livelihood. Make no mistake, I love the hell out of science, and I wish to continue in the field... but until you amass a quantity of papers and become a known name in a particular field, you will find yourself moving around A LOT, looking for any lab that will accept you. I can't take that lifestyle. So after a year of lab assistant work (which was dead simple but paid surprisingly well), I am now going to study to become a Doctor/Researcher. Get my MD and my PhD - become a specialist and then not only do I have more knowledge, a safe alternative job (Australia is always short on Doctors - if you have an MD and haven't killed anyone, you WILL get a job) and the opportunity to apply any future research to patients themselves.

It will mean another 5~6 years of my life will be spent studying... but It'll be worth it.

Does 18 qualify?

I get a student loan; 70% of it goes on the education, car insurance to get there and fuel to get the car getting there. The other 30% makes up videogames, alcohol (pub or otherwise) and extra fuel in the car for when I pile my friends in the car & we go for a big drive to Cardiff, the valleys, etc.

But I have spent a large portion of my time since May looking for a job... I must've applied for something close to a thousand jobs in Newport, Cwmbran, Cardiff & the internet. I attained a week long temp in August where a built a database for a company who teach primary school children externally; other than that I've only had 2 interviews, both of which failed as 100% enthusiasm isn't enough to get me the job over the absolute kiss-arse, 110% next to me.

It's quite ironic because if I had passed either interview and got a job, I would be working full time / nights in [undisclosed supermarket] for my gap year as my lazy self had wished for, luckily I failed and now I'm studying Computer Forensics at University following an abrupt, rushed enrolment.

[small]You're gonna do what to my xbox, dude I just won against? Hack it? I THINK NOT, YOUNG SIR! - ANTI HACKING AWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!![/small]

Nope, no nonesense like that, just some stupid teenagers trying to go down headfirst on slides that are practically a nintey degree drop. I've seen a fair number of guys hitting on some of my coworkers though, but that's completely unrelated.

I am a public safety dispatcher for 911/Police/Fire. I am working the overnight shift right now and if I couldn't bring my laptop with me to work, I'd go insane. People need to break the law more around here.
I also do computer maintenance work on the side and build custom gaming rigs for people. That is about it.
