So they are complaining because an advertisement is successful. God I hate people.

I'd just like to note that it was my mom who gave me a pre-order of Dead Space 2 for Christmas. Also, she thought the ad campaign was hilarious. Suck it, EA marketers, I just broke your assumptions.

I'm sure EA was actually targeting that range of 18-25 year olds that still live with their parents but I still have to agree with Common Sense here. Anyone old enough to buy this game, probably really doesn't care what their mom thinks, and I should hope by that age their mom doesn't care what they spend their own money on either.

To me the ad was kind of funny but very juvenile, I think it actually deterred me from buying the game more than it interested me just on that very basis.

I do however, think it gives out a bad message; one that only perpetuates the image that videogames are for kids, regardless of content and rating.
Also, this.

I hate it when people in arguments use "in and of itself". It's just a fancy way of saying nothing and sounding clever.

Spanish tangent:
(También odio cuando usan en español "Idiosincrasia", no tiene nada que ver con lo de arriba pero para mi caen en la misma categoría)

Also i agree with Common Sense Media, antagonizing moms on purpose is something only kids could find amusing or appalling. What?, a grown man is going to call home and say: "bet you don't know what i bought today after work? That violent game you wouldn't like me to play! and i didn't washed my hands before dinner too, ha ha ha, what do you think about that, MOM!"

I hate to be the one to say it but.... the advocacy group is right. That's exactly who the ad is targeting.
I KNOW! Who, other then minors, gives a shit what their MOM thinks of a game?

These guys just see "Advocacy Group...Angry...Dead Space 2" and they light up the torches, without actually looking at the CONTEXT of the situation. I mean, they're defending the EA MARKETING DEPARTMENT. I thought we'd already established that those guys were twats,[footnote]Dante's Inferno, anyone?[/footnote] what's going on here?

Common sense tells a lot more than any proof here - aside from appreciating the advertisement method itself, nobody who's not living at home under parental authority is going to appreciate the ad as an ad. Unless understood solely as a "meta" ad, this is definitely targeted at a younger audience.

Common Sense Media is in bad need of some actual common sense. Making a good advertising campaign is not evil.

Myself, I "hate" the campaign. It's shallow and it's taking away all the arguments why would you even consider Dead Space 2.
Showing only the gruesome parts of the game, without any consistent plot structure, is possibly more harmful to the cause of game-acceptance among average adults than anything else.

Honestly, I hate those commercials. Not because of the reasons Common Sense Media does but because they go against everything we as gamers have been trying to do. How many times have gamers, as a group, had to explain to the ignorant masses that games are not just about gore and have some artistic value? These ads seem to spit in our faces.

Did it occur to anyone that EA was just trying to take a fresh approach to advertisement and not particularly trying to appeal to a demography?
Honestly, that would incriminate them even further. If they are not trying to target the older adult demographic...then who do they target? Nerds living in their mom's basement?

Making a advertisement for your game that appeals to your target demographic is something ANY company wants to make. EA is a big boy and probably has a small army of marketing people who think these things up. They don't just think "hey, lets make a funny add" they think "how can we make this product seem appealing to our target demographic". Now why would they play up a juvenile desire to spite your parents instead of playing up the horror aspect of the game? (probably because it's not really scary in the first place, hah!) These people don't just to stuff for shits and jiggles. There is lots of money involved and guess what demographic makes up a big chunk of people who play violent games...teenagers who are under 17.

did........did we tear a rip in the space-time continuum?
They're just mad that EA beat them to the punch in the very niche horrified-mothers-watching-game market.

Wait a second... I thought, from seeing the adverts alone, that it was a 13+ type game. It's 17+? Why would people going to college and above care what their mother thinks? Their mother will never see this game in the person's possession.

1) What?

2) Who in their right mind would find that ad appealing?

3) Who thinks that other people find that appealing?

4) Why are some people just so stupid?

See, if you had legally enforceable classifications, you wouldn't have this problem. Then kids wouldn't be able to get it unless they had their parent's express consent.

I said this first time I saw it, it's a clever angle for marketing, but I knew it'd attract trouble.

It's essentially saying 'Your mom won't like this' and that's exactly the kinda thing a kid would say.

Clever concept, but perhaps ill thought as a campaign.

Common Sense Media isn't amused by the campaign, not because of its nature, but because the family advocacy group feels the ads are overly appealing to kids under 17.
So, what they're saying is, that they recognize that the ad has a wide appeal because most of the mothers the organization is caring about are overbearing freaks with morals stuck in a period some century ago who's children want to do nothing more than to piss them off?

Yes. I see their point. And I fart in it's general direction. Promote better parenting, not tolerance of bad parenting.

To anyone thinking "respect your parents" while reading this, I have just one little video for you:

To those who cba watching:
"The truth is, obedience and respect should not be automatic, they should be earned, they should be based on parents' performance"

HAHA! Fantastic, im surprised EA came up with clever marketing tactics like that usually its lowest common denominator mindlessness or just adding "EA challenge everything" to the end of every game commercial.

Good to see the advocacy group hates dead space 2, i would likely hate everything they stand for so we're probably about equal. For those in this thread who side with the group of moms... hand in your gamer card guys lol...

When I saw the ad I was really annoyed by it. For one thing it's really stupid who cares what your mom thinks? Second if you do care your probably some rebellious kid who probably shouldn't play this game at all. Third it undermines the game and the medium as the only reason to partake in it so you can do stuff adults won't approve of. I've been the common sense website and oddly enough they are very sensible which is more than I can say for the things EA does from time to time.
