And actually make it available to people. That's pretty crucial too.
We have high density " slum" housing already available to the homeless here, they would rather sleep rough, and so would I. There is a reason why they refuse to go there, I addressed that already but those proposing this just throw their hands up and say " that is all you get". Many of these projects wind up getting abandoned and those ugly buildings wind up empty or demolished in the end because it doesn't work if the people refuse to live there. It just turns out to be a means to segregate the poor to keep them away from everyone else rather than actually trying to help them have a better life. They have been tearing these down in DFW for years for good reason. 1) they do not address the needs of those needing safe, healthy housing that meets their needs. 2) It is dangerous and unsafe for the people who do live there 3)Elderly and disabled have to have safe, handicap accessible buildings usually on the ground floor because you cannot guarantee the elevator will work every single day with criminals intentionally breaking it and they are trapped otherwise, with wider parking spaces with easy access to their doctors and hospitals, and with the disabled being the largest of any group among the homeless we have, they have to be a priority here. Some of the disabled actually require assisted living facilities, as they are unable to care for themselves. Since they too are also unable to defend themselves, the housing provided has to be secure. 4) Families want safe neighborhoods, playgrounds and schools and would rather live in a van or a tent than not have access to those things. This isn't just about a physical building, it is about them being able to live their daily lives, their needs, and their futures here. They build these slums no one wants, they turn into under policed disrepaired hell holes and they tear them down a few years later due to being unsafe eyesores and the cycle continues.
