So i was just having a shower thougt. After what time is it no longer socially acceptable for an adult to be seen is his pjs?

I noticed i really see people in pyjamas, and i was wondering of there is some kind of unwritten societal norme as to what time it's no longer appropriate to be seen in pyjamas.

After thinking about it, unless said adult is sick or really old ( like retired old), i came up with 10 am. I can see people sleeping in and making breakfast between 9 and 10 am, but if i see someone in their pjs pass 10, I'm judging the fuck out of them, and will forever seem them as a lazy bastard. Even if you aren't going out, put on some proper ( and comfortable) clothes once the clock hits 10.

In public or in private?

In public, never. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EEEEVVVVVEEEEER. Seriously, it absolutely baffles me that people think PJs are something to be worn in public (Note: This is assuming an able bodied adult so people who might not be able to do it like the elderly, toddlers or disabled are exempt from that rule).

In private, I suppose that's on you. I immediately get dressed in the morning (then again, I don't wear PJs as I just go boxers and now that image is stuck in your head and no, no amount of bleach will wipe it away, sorry) but in the privacy of their own home, people can wear whatever they want. I suppose if you have guests on you should probably put on some big boy clothing but if you're home alone (or with kids/spouse/the gimp you met last night who is chained to the radiator), then whatevs.

In public.*

There is no age limit...unless they are footie pajamas.

*Exceptions made for emergencies, pharmacies when buying medicine, and "fuck, out of eggs/milk* when making breakfast and just buying that.

Edit: Misread a bit, but I stand by my comment. I dont think there is a time, really, cause not everyone sleeps on the same schedule.

Adults wear pajamas in order to quietly inform anybody who disturbs them "I was still asleep, you asshole!".

Depends on what you wear to bed as well... I'd be jailed if I wore my pyjamas in public

I mean, time is relative to your schedule. My schedule, I don't sleep until about 5am and I wake up around 1Ppm. So your time is being unfair to me.

But it's okay because I'm not going out in public in my sleep wear anyway. I don't think anyone reasonably should, unless whatever they went out for calls for urgency, or like others have said, they are physically/mentally incapable of changing themselves.

If you see someone out in their pajamas in public, judge the fuck out of them. It takes seconds to put on real pants. You don't need to dress fancy, but it will come off as sloppy and lazy if you go out in what you slept in. You can brush it off all you want and say you don't care. That's fine.

Define pajamas.

My pajamas consist of shorts and old Star Wars shirts. I would be totally be fine with wearing them in public. Maybe not in some fancy shmancy place, but to the convenience store why not.

as long as you're not going to the shops in them then wear those badboys as long as you want!
I have noticed though that if I wear my PJ's all day on a sunday (my day off) I rarely get anything done so there is a down side :(

Having seen all sorts in their PJs at 2AM at my job it utterly baffles me how a person couldn't take 5 minutes and throw on a shirt, jeans and some shoes. It's not so much inappropriate, just...awkward. Beyond your front yard grabbing the paper, put some actual clothes on!

As a person who never wears pyjamas, I can't answer that. I do however wear a dressing gown at all hours of the day, and would wear it to work too if I could. My wife puts on pyjamas the second she gets home, which is both a lady thing and an Indian thing (hence the name). I think society judges people who are still wearing pyjamas by 11-midday, with the assumption that you should be showed and dressed for the day by then.

I believe it is only unacceptable if your pajamas are sleeping in underwear or nude, otherwise at least here in Mexico it's not uncommon to see people shopping in their pajamas and I don't remember anyone ever making a fuss over it, other than me thinking "Those people haven't showered today, disgusting".

As for myself, I can't get anything done if I haven't showered and dressed, so it's never acceptable, if someone is delivering a package to me I won't come out to pick it up if I'm not showered and dressed, so that's that.

It's only unacceptable if the adult in question isn't cool. Otherwise you can do whatever you want and call it being ironic.

If I'm having a day where I'm staying at home the whole time and realize I need to go out to buy a single thing, or maybe go get some sugary snacks, or if it's just 1 stop that will take only a few minutes to get what I need... I say fuck it and wear them anyways. I don't care, personally. If I'm gonna be out for longer than 15 minutes, then I'll bother with putting on everything else. If it's 10 minutes or less, I don't really feel the need. I at least put on a hoodie or something so it's not 100% PJs, just my pants are what's visible

I don't know? I generally fine seeing an adult wearing his or her pyjamas. Granted I don't expect them to wear it in public perticually outdoor during the day. Maybe I can get if it was at night and they were just lazy.

Wear whatever the hell you want in your own home. Go naked for all I care, or anyone else should care. In public though, never imo. Unless your PJ's are regular clothes you just use for sleeping that is, then it doesn't matter.

I see young women wearing pajama pants all the time during the fall and winter months---they're warm. I've seen old women do the same but with the tops as well.

I've occasionally gone out wearing pajama pants because...they're warm and what I had available. If folks want to judge me then you can be sure that I'll lose sleep over it. /s

This is an amusing topic. It somehow reminds me of the time my teenage nephew acted like an adolescent twat when he saw me hug my octogenarian mother: "Ew, P.D.A.!"[footnote]I had to ask him what that meant. Public Display of Affection.[/footnote]

I flatly told him that I loved my Mom and she was old enough to die any year now and I was darned well going to get as many hugs out of her as I could in the meantime. She was right there and didn't so much as blink.

Not being reacted to like he expected (he expected me to shy away as if I was a high school kid--long past that) he shut his mouth and never mentioned it again.

Kids.

I don't really think you should really be wearing pajamas out in public no matter what time it is. Although I've done so when I've needed to quickly run to the drug store or something. Of course my "pajamas" consist of a pair of lounging pants and a t-shirt.
