Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Join Marvel (Comics) Universe in Variant Covers

Coulson and company leap from hit TV series to Marvel Comics Universe.

Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson became the first original character of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/marvel%20cinematic%20universe?from_search=1&&os=marvel+cinematic+universe] are set to join him in Marvel's first big new title of 2015 (or last big new title of 2014, depending on how you count).

Set to debut in a series on December 31st mainstream Marvel Universe [http://marvel.com/news/comics/23647/marvel_welcomes_you_to_level_8_for_the_shield_1_launch_party] (aka "Earth 616") and feature comics incarnations of the aforementioned Coulson along with Melinda May, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons. In a departure from their television status quo, the series (from fan-favorite author Mark Waid and a rotating art team) will framed around Coulson using his encyclopedic knowledge of the world's superheroes to recruit specialized teams for key missions.

A series of variant covers, depicting the Agents interacting with various Marvel characters (plus Deadpool riffing on the compulsive alien writing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/reviews/12601-Agents-of-S-H-I-E-L-D-Review-Season-2-Episode-7-The-Writing-on-t] storyline) has been released, along with preview pages offering a glimpse at Coulson's personal history.

Really excited by the prospect!
But Coulson and May don't look very much like they do IRL on those covers... :(

Have to say, the actual pages look real positive storywise!
But the Coulson depiction on them? Not so. :(

So... What this is going to be is, essentially, Agents of SHIELD, except far better connected with the rest of the MARVEL universe and without the presence of Skye and Agent Ward?

...

This actually has the potential of being absolutely great.

Oh my gaaahd! The Escapist's 90's retro, horrible, clunky image gallery gave me cancer!

Given that Skye is the only cast member of Agents of SHIELD that existed in the comics before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a thing, those two statements are slightly at odds.

Who the HELL let Rocket drive Lola?!?!?!

Also I think they either missed something or Deadpool is working with an odd chimichanga recipe in that writing on the wall cover. At about waist height on his left, it says 1/2 teaspoon cum...Obviously this is supposed to be cumin, but I feel they should've caught this or they did it on purpose. Hell, they've got the terrigen mists and gamma radiation up top.

All I'm saying is, maybe deadpool isn't the best purpose to get culinary advice from.

Eh, female comic book characters being drawn in painful, spine-disintegrating poses is kinda normal to my knowledge.

Wait, Ftiz has a monkey? Fitz doesn't have a monkey. Fitz should have a monkey. Fitz NEEDS a monkey, no.

Get on it, Marvel.
