There have been equally silly thing through the years. This guy is representing himself, and I believe he mentioned playing a lot of Mortal Kombat VS. DC and wanting to wear a purple suit like The Joker when he went to court.
I saw some legitimacy to his original claim/case, but as this goes on it's becoming too absurd to be believe. The thing that gets me though is that he's getting coverage, even from the gaming media. I mean most nerds who suggest insane lawsuits and such don't get half the press this guy is getting so I'm sort of at a loss.
Also, when it comes to "The Catcher In The Rye" I can't help but wonder if there might be something behind mentioning that. See, that book isn't really about alienation, it's about insanity. The entire point of the book more or less is about this dude called Holden Caufield wandering around and making pointed observations about society and how superficial and "phoney" it all is. Throughout the book your supposed to be going "you know, he's right" (this was especially true when it was first written) but then at the end of the book the punchline is that he's totally insane. The points inherant in this being manyfold.
I guess he's "alienated" *IF* you consider the fact that he's nuts. But in the scope of the book he hits bars and clubs and such and hardly behaves like either an agrophobe or a sociopath.
Of course so much can be said about that book that it's absurd. Mentioning it almost seems like an admission of "I'm messing with you all".
Incidently, I had to read "The Catcher In The Rye" in school, and along with the writings of Kurt Vonnegut (such as Harrison Bergeron) I recommend everyone read it at least once. Even if you find it boring at first, in the end you'll find it rather thought provoking when you actually ponder it later.
