Aim Away From the Face and Learn to Talk With Icewind Dale's Survival Rules

We're one day away from the end of the Survival Rules series and the release of Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. Catch the final episodes exclusively at The Escapist.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition will release tomorrow, delivering to gamers everywhere a shiny new version of one of the RPG genre's most beloved isometric classics. That won't be the only thing happening tomorrow though. October 30th will also mark the end of Beamdog and Wizard of the Coast's series <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138191-Icewind-Dale-Enhanced-Edition-Survival-Rules-Teach-Tips-for-Adventuring>of Survival Rules.

Released exclusively through The Escapist, this series of videos has, as of today, already offered nine valuable lessons to help give new players and veterans alike a leg up when the new version of the game launches. Most recently, the Survival Rules, hosted by the ever affable Alveus Malcanter, focused on the importance of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/9842-Icewind-Dale-Enhanced-Edition-Rules-Part-8-Aim-Away-From-Face>aiming your explosions and (occasionally) indulging <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/trailers/9844-Icewind-Dale-Enhanced-Edition-Rules-Part-9-Talk-It-Out>in peaceful conversation.

To find out the subject of the final Survival Rule check back in with The Escapist tomorrow.

"one of the RPG genre's most beloved isometric classics"?
Wasn't Icewind Dale considered pretty much meh by most people?
Or my memory is playing tricks with me?

It commonly gets overshadowed by the likes of Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate because of it's lack of party characters, but Icewind Dale was still pretty highly regarded when it came out.

I would say the main difference is that Icewind Dale had a fairly unimportant story compared to BG and PS:T, but in terms of making low-level D&D combat satisfying, I'd probably give it the gold medal. It's a very solid party-based dungeon crawler, and isn't trying to be anything else, but connotations with the Infinity Engine may leave modern players disappointed.

No. Icewind Dale was always a great game. It's just in a slightly different game from BG 1 and 2. IWD is more combat-centric. Where in BG 1 and 2, you had party members with personalities and motivations of their own, they don't in IWD. You party is of your own design and have no special interaction with the world or what you do. Imagine Dragon Age Origins where your entire party are mute grey wardens you created.
