My favorite part of akira is easily Kaneda. Whereas most anime have the main character be the one who get the super power, Kaneda never does even when his friend and girlfriend (in the manga) do. Yet he always stay relevant in the story by his action, he doesn't just feel like a boat caught in the current with no direction (like most other anime/manga lead), he always stays active and take action.

It's one of the "First Anime" a lot of people used to recommend when I was younger, along with Ninja Scroll, and a few others. I think that's a pity, because while its a visual masterpiece, it's just sort of OK otherwise in my opinion. There is a lot of interesting and varied anime out there, and this is a part of it. I don't think it deserves to be quite as revered as it is though.

I like this. Never thought of it that way. Its similar to how my favorite side character in the Pirates movies is Norrington. He is what I call in most movies, The Suitor. The suitor is usually old, ugly, lecherous, corrupt, or some combination of those, along with being in some position of power, usually a high advisor or some form of constable/lead assassin/spy. He is always usually the one the father wants for the main female to marry. Norrington was none of those, he deferred to Will in the end, always held up what was right, never abused his station, and was honorable to the point of giving everyone a day of rest at the end when Jack ran off. And in the second film sacrificing himself to atone for his actions making him a pretty unique character.

Kind of like C.J. in the Dawn of the Dead remake.

TBH, I found Akira somewhat disappointing. I was already very familiar with anime in general by the time it was made, and I had read the Akira manga several times through at that point. Though the movie was fun it simply did not live up to the manga at all, which had a far more interesting story and room for much more character development. I'd give the film three stars out of five myself, maybe three and a half.

I like Akira. It's a relentless two hour assault on the senses, but in a good way.

Small fun fact. Kaneda's bike was the basis for the Nod Recon Bike featured in the original Command and Conquer.

TBH, I found Akira somewhat disappointing. I was already very familiar with anime in general by the time it was made, and I had read the Akira manga several times through at that point. Though the movie was fun it simply did not live up to the manga at all, which had a far more interesting story and room for much more character development. I'd give the film three stars out of five myself, maybe three and a half.

Call me a heretic, but I like the film a bit better.
For me, the manga drags on a bit too much in the middle section, where Tetsuo has revived Akira and is holding his fortress in the middle of the destoyed city.There is not too much happening in this quite long part of the books neither concerning action nor the characters.

Well, fair enough. Each to their own. I don't recall it dragging, myself, and I felt that Kaneda and Kei got a lot of development during this period that the anime missed out on.
