Alice Madness Returns Error Code 1638

I recently got an Origin key for the Complete Edition of Alice: Madness Returns off Amazon, successfully redeemed it on Origin, and tried downloading it. I got the above error code. I whitelisted Origin in Avast and my firewall, and deleted the Crysis 2 registry key (dunno why that apparently works), yet the error persists.

As I don't want to have wasted $30 just because I wanted both the game & it's prequel, can anyone help me with this error?

It's not the Crysis 2 registry key you have to delete. You need to delete the registry key for the game you're trying to download, in this case Alice Madness Returns. The reason people were told to delete the Crysis 2 registry key was because they were having problems installing Crysis 2 and error code 1638 is a universal installation error.

Tried it, no dice, am I screwed?

You can try getting a refund but I'm not sure who you would get the refund from.

I have no idea how Origin handles refunds or if you would even be eligible for one since the game code came from amazon.

One last thing you could try would be to manually enter the registry files for Alice Madness Returns and see if that helps.

Uninstall Origin, delete any leftover files including registry files, reboot your pc, then re-install origin by running the installer as an admin. I'd suggest installing it to somewhere like c:\games\origin, instead of your program files folder.

Then set origins exe file to run as admin.'After that, add origin's path as an exception to your filewall, the built-in windows firewall and also check if your router has a firewall that's running. Finally, you might need to forward some ports in your router. These ones specifically:
UDP - 443
TCP - 80, 443, 8080

If after all that it still doesn't work, refund it and grab it on steam or gog.

Refund may not be an option, since I got the key off Amazon. Steam's not an option either, since it was pulled from Steam a while back.

This is weird, but I had the same sort of problem when I wanted to reinstall C & C The First Decade a while back. I had to pause my firewall (Comodo) and it installed fine.

Instead of whitelisting try pausing both Avast! (which I also use) and your firewall. If that doesn't work, try shutting them down entirely while downloading. I'm fairly certain your PC will be safe for a little while, unless you think you may have downloaded something not-so-nice recently.

Oh right, and don't worry too much about getting a refund. This is Amazon we're talking about; they bend over backwards for customers, unless like in my case you order something a month prior and they don't want to do anything yet because I foolishly bought something that was shipping from India and blah blah blah fml.

Eh? It's still available for purchase on steam. I'm looking at it's page on my alt account right now.

Did my other suggestions not work though? It was what I had to do when I was having problems with origin and DA:I.

I just checked the Steam page, and the buy link is still removed from the page. Also, I haven't tried it because I don't want to risk screwing up the registry (as I don't remember the registry path, and I don't know how to turn that code into a key).

I'm getting upgrades on friday (and will have to do a full factory reset, as two of said upgrades are a new motherboard & my first SSD), so think I should just wait till Friday to try again?

Also, think it might have something to do with the fact that I previously bought it off Origin the same day? (and immediately refunded because it wasn't the complete collection).

Hmm, if you're going to be completely doing a factory reset, then yeah. unless you want to download it now and back it up along with your other stuff to an external drive or something.

If that's the case, then just open regedit as an admin, use the "find" option to look up Alice: Madness Returns, then delete the key it finds.

Okay, I deleted every single instance of Alice2, and Madness Returns, that the Find function could find, yet, no dice. Could there be something I'm doing fundamentally wrong?

Hrmmm... that's really bizarre. Is it still giving the same error code?

Ok, so, it's almost friday, and at this point you're probably better off just waiting until after your upgrade is done to reinstall origin and try downloading Alice again, but...

Uninstall origin, downloaded the latest version and install it as an admin. Then make sure that it's added as an exception in all of your firewalls & anti-virus apps (windows, 3rd party and router). After that, make sure the following ports are forwarded in your router:
TCP: 80, 443, 9988, 20000-20100, 22990, 17502, 42127
UDP: 3659, 14000-14016, 22990-23006, 25200-25300

After all that, make sure you disable any cloud-based options in origin, and when installing, choose somewhere other than the default option that origin gives you.

If all that fails, find out where origin is trying to install it to, download a pirate copy, install it and then transfer all the install files to the place origin thinks it should be installed to.

origin really is a clusterfuck of a program, trying to diagnose its problems is like trying to comprehend anti-matter through existential poetry.

Makes me wish I was in TotalBiscuit's position when it comes to Origin. He apparently has fewer problems with it than the much older, much more popular Steam.

The weirdest thing is that, when I previously bought the regular Alice 2 on Origin, it installed first time without a hitch.

That's the thing with origin. It either works perfectly, or it's an absolute clusterfuck. There's no middle ground.

You also tried to install the one you got from amazon on the same night, yeah? That might have caused origin to become more confused than a creationist staring at dinosaur bones.

Have you uninstalled origin, run ccleaner, rebooted and reinstalled the latest version of origin?

Nope, but I'll try today.

Edit: Just tried it, no dice....

Did you run the registry cleaner part of ccleaner too? (Don't mean to sound condescending, I've had too many friends forget that bit so I always check).

Don't worry about it, and I did.
