I'll be honest here. I'm an aliens fanboy.

Not just fan. Nononono. Fanboy. The moment aliens or even just colonial marines are involved I become like a ten year old child seeing a firetruck; I'm still going to think it's cool, even if it turned up to fight a massive fire at a bunny orphanage.

So, a kinda meh game, but I still think I'll enjoy it. Worth a try, in any case.

Called it?

I can't actually remember if I called it, but I bloody well should have.

Ah well, this was never going to be more than Steam sale fodder anyway.

EDIT: It's getting its arse comprehensively whooped on Metacritic [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/aliens-colonial-marines]. Even Jim, such a hardcore fan of all things Alien that he defended Alien 3, absolutely hated it [http://www.destructoid.com/review-aliens-colonial-marines-244276.phtml].

Also, turns out I did call it, kind of [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.399882.16416521].

Never really got why this game got so hyped up.

I watched some gameplay and it looked a bit generic to be honest. Not to mention the fact that Gearbox is known for releasing generic, uninspired games (read: Duke Nukem).

Duke Nukem Forever Syndrome. Was almost cancelled, if I'm not mistaken, four times. Five different developers have had their hands on it, with at least three at once this time last year. Hell, the actual staff from Duke Nukem Forever's development was probably working on this game. Its hard to tell if they just can't catch a break, or they're miserably incompetent.

I have a hunch that SEGA is trying to milk the game into essentially a $90 retail cost. They strung people along for three months with having details about Survivor mode being very vague, possibly deliberately, leaving the impression that it was a wave survival/horde mode. Its not. I bet the only reason they announced that it wasn't, which was only three days ago, might I add, is because it was leaked from a Wal-Mart pre-order voucher. When people would be inevitably disappointed to find that its not horde mode (and there are still people who will find that out the hard way), they would go "Hey, you want that? $15." I've read, I've counted now, eight times, that the game doesn't have a "real" ending, and every time, whoever is saying it thinks that a real ending is going to be sold as DLC. Guess what? SEGA announced that they'd be have story missions in future DLC as well.

To the fans of the Alien franchise out there, from a fan of the IP, let me say, you'll be fairly disappointed and just insulted by some of the plot. I've read most of it, and I have that the contributions that it makes to the Alien lore is probably worth borrowing from a friend, not even renting, because there are a lot of gaping plotholes.

Well, that's a little bit disappointing. Aw well, don't have that much cash at the moment anyway.

Can't say I'm surprised since everything I've seen of the game has looked mediocre at best.

By the sounds of it, Gearbox may have only made the multiplayer. Just a rumor though.

Gearbox makes decent games most of the time, and they only worked on the multiplayer. TimeGate Studios did most of the campaign, and their record is... less than stellar (considering all they've ever done are F.E.A.R. spinoffs)

I know that it's an old theme, but what's up with the star rating?

The review is almost entirely made up of negatives (or could be good... buts), yet it's worth 3/5? That's (literally) not half bad, but the review says it's almost all bad. Needs more consistency!

As for the game, you no it's not good when there's no video review.

That really pisses me off to no end. Why would they outsource it? That's kinda stupid since most of what I've been hearing from them is how it's Canon and authentic it is. Despite this, I'm still picking it up (since I preordered the game) and will try to enjoy myself.

Because of the four times the game was abandoned. New team had to cobble together enough working parts to try and make some profit on the game. Needless to say, that never ends well.

I've noticed the only times a game gets a 1 is when the game is completely broken to the point of unplayability (Amy, Steel Battalion), and 2 goes to games that only marginally function and barely entertains. 3 seems to the baseline for games that work, but aren't very good.

Right. The game *functions* just fine. It's not broken by any stretch of the imagination. The mechanics that are in place, while antiquated, do work as intended. There are some good bits here as well, and at times you'll actually feel like you're playing the Aliens game you always wanted, but it doesn't last long. The multiplayer is great, the music is superb, and there are a few tiny details and nods for Aliens fans that I will not spoil.

However, the graphical issues, the non-existant plot, and the seemingly wanton slaughtering of Aliens canon brings it down quite a bit.

You run around locations on LV-426 after Aliens?

Ok, the derelict spaceship could have been way, way away for all we know, but otherwise everywhere else on the planet they went to...um...no.

Ummm.....I'm actually enjoying it so far. Could have been better but don't think it is deserving the bashing it's getting. Not disapointed in my pre order and having fun playing co-op. Have owned every Aliens game since my Amstrad 464 days. Would have preferd Ai like in the original AVP 1 and 2 but it's not as good. Am I the only one who's enjoying it or what?

well, never had a huge interest to play it. 6-8 hours long is not worth my money. and from the sound of it, its mainly shooting aliens down.
so i will give it a pass and wait till its really cheap to get and when i have nothing better to play.

I actually did see that, there's always one of these reviews floating around for every bad game, but I'm pretty sure this guy has been payed off or something, since he calls it a "loving homage" while everyone else is saying it decimates the Aliens continuity

Such a shame. I wasn't expecting the game to be great or anything; if it were just decent I'd probably be playing it now. I'm not saying I'll never play it, but I don't think it's worth the price of admission right now

Regardless of the bombing reviews (they never usually ever sway my view or opinion) I'm still going to grab this on Thursday and give it a go.

Besides I like AVP 2010 even though their multiplayer felt shoddy and the marines campaign felt it could have done with more weapons.

Actually, there's a four-star review here but they do seem to be few and far between. Still - the Escapist star ratings system is fairly clear - three stars is appropriate for a game that's fun in places but flawed without being actually technically broken.

Fair enough, from what I've seen most people are saying that it is broken, for example
That's supposed to be an enemy soldier... Of course, that type of thing might not have been what this reviewer experienced.

There's a saying I learned: "Someone pick up the phone, because I fucking called it."

I kind of expected it, there are things that we expect from movie based games and then there's what the developer wants to do. They are two different things and it disappoints me. Aliens will always be a good movie to me, but as a game I always pass on them.

Apparently they retconned Hicks' death somehow. This is a move that I am just fine with, but I can easily see how someone else (especially someone who liked Alien 3) would regard it as a terrible attack on continuity.

Oh wow.

I actually pre-ordered this when I woke up this morning. Mostly out of boredom, I figured it would be an average game with flaws. Seems its just a flawed game. Meh.

It's getting slammed from everyone, one of the worst Metacritic averages for any "popular" game I've ever seen.

Mike and I spent much of the day discussing this game. There was rage. So much rage.

The multiplayer is a lot of fun, though, so as long as you're fine with the game COMPLETELY BETRAYING CANON, you'll have a fun enough time.

Oh, and the AI is really fond of walking in front of your gun.

Even as a huge Aliens fan I took the recommendation of a friend of mine who worked as a bug tester, he said don't buy it and I am glad I trusted him. It looks like yet another half arsed game trying to get by on the reputation of the series rather than putting any effort into it and making it stand out as a game on it's own.

Disappointing. I'm sure I'll still play it. I'm a budget gamer anyway with a back log of games so I was never going to pick this up soon. All the more reason to wait for a steam sale. Especially if it only lasts 6 - 8 hours. I dislike it when I can potentially beat a game in one sitting if I have nothing better to do that day.

I have a great love for Alien and Aliens... but everything since then, and I do mean EVERYTHING, has been disappointing. Aliens 3, Alien: Resurrection, Aliens vs. Predator, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, Prometheus...

Would anybody care to tell me how Aliens: Colonial Marines ruins the canon? Because, at this point, that's a mighty impressive thing to accomplish.

normally I wouldn't judge a game on its multiplayer (in conjunction with the single player, see devs of Spec Ops The Line who lamented about such), but as a fan of Gearbox who apparently really only touched the multiplayer in this game...guess that's all I have to judge on

still planning on grabbing the game from Redbox, but I'm not the biggest Aliens fan anyway :c

You didn't seem to like Aliens: Colonial Marines, and had a lot to complain about. Why did you give it a positive 3/5 stars then? That's still a decent score, by no means great, but still decent.

Some other people are saying Jim started a conspiracy theory that the devs made a good level just for the press that wasn't even in the actual game.

I wanna see Angry Joe's reaction after he made a video of 10 reasons the game will rock.

Honestly, I saw this game at E3 2011 and it looked amazing. It was a live demo, hands-off but live, and it was fantastic. The final product looks like a turd by comparison to what I remember seeing.

I'm enjoying it thus far! Granted I'm only at the 3rd mission thus far, perhaps the bugs (err, glitches) start coming out a little later on. As for the story, I'm following it so far. Perhaps I'm just ignorant enough of the entire series' lore, but I haven't encountered any major plotholes yet. But I will say....

Yyyyeeeeaaahhh...I really gotta wonder what the point of always taking point when opening a door is when every time you do and start shooting at what's on the other side, your AI rushes right through the door and into your fire.

STILL! I would say I'm enjoying it thus far...sadly I won't have any friends to play with until Thursday, unless one of the random jackasses on my friends list from Left 4 Dead picks it up or something. :p

I didn't need this review to tell me the game was a let down.

Finished the campaign in a whopping 4 hours on soldier. Watched all the cinematics, found most of the hidden stuff.

Bland, generic and outdated mechanics. Having the "right loadout" is bullshit since you have all the weapons available to you at all times (once you unlock them), you just have to go to a 2-tier menu to "equip" them in your weapon slots. Except you can do this at any time in the game, so it's just a minor inconvenience.

Except for the smart gun, weapons are boring, bland and unsatisfying. I wound up using the Pulse Rifle about 90% of the time.

On Solder difficulty ammo and armour are so common that I never ran out (plus you have your whole arsenal at hand IF you'd ever run out of ammo for a single weapon) and the big, stompy Loader sections that were hyped are just bullshit. You spend 15 seconds opening a door, and about a minute fighting some big dude (and that just involves left clicking until it goes down). That's it!

Enemy AI is very bad, you'll often see xenos jumping around in place (though the first time it happened was worth a laugh - retard alien jumping up and down going "omg guys, I found them, I found them!") or human soldiers using stuff like a tiny railing as full body cover.

Also, for a game designed with co-op in mind, actually playing it with another person destroys what little atmosphere there is. The first encounter with a xeno was tense and fun at the same time alone, but throw in another player and it's just a sad joke. The whole motion tracker mechanic is just completely unnecessary. Quite honestly, co-op feels like a cheap, least minute addition to the game.

Story made me facepalm over and over and over, it's so incredibly bad.

Very disappointing, totally not worth a full price purchase.

You'd be surprised...

I thought AvP 2010 was ok. I finished it, which is more than I can say for a lot of games these days. It was a decent game, I had some fun with it, and I moved on.

Colonial Marine on the other hand... the first 15 minutes of the game are awesome. The other 3 hours and a bit are absolute shite. The only enjoyment I got from the game was abusing it with my co-op buddy.

I know rating structures are totally arbitrary, and subjective, but I have to ask,

Why in the name of all that is logical do you give 3 out of 5 to a game that you spent 2 pages tearing apart?

I haven't read a SINGLE review of this game that puts it above 50 out of 100. Every review says this game is shit. I can't understand your justification of 3-5. This game is shit. It's ok, you can admit it. Gearbox isn't going to cut off relations with the Escapist, and other companies aren't going to pull their product line. Hell, even IGN claimed this game was the biggest pile of dog crap in the last 5 years, and IGN is KNOWN for choking down the long hot salami of whatever production studio gives it a free AAA game.

Be honest with your rating. This game is shit, you know it, we know it, hell, I bet even Gearbox knew it. This game is BARELY 2-5, and more likely 1-5. The ORIGINAL AvP is better than this. (Anyone who remembers being in rooms with ZERO light and only having 3 or 4 flares, with aliens all around you, HIGH FIVE).

Honestly, I never really saw what set this game apart from the last AvP game. Now, don't get me wrong, I rather liked AvP (or at least the multi-player - lots of fun), but considering that most people apparently did not, I never quite understood the interest this game seemed to have garnered, as it more or less looks the same, minus Predators.

While not a great game, I've enjoyed playing the coop with my girlfriend all day today. Fun enough, and as an Aliens fanboy there is plenty to make me grin and bear it.

It definitely isn't perfect, but at least give it a Redbox rental before you decide to shit all over it. I think in the coming weeks when more people actually try it and take the reviews with a grain of salt, the community may be a little more divided over the game. It's not as bad as most reviews make it seem (not to me, at least), and a decent way to waste an afternoon and evening if you're a total Aliens geek. If you've seen the film a multitude of times and get all teary-eyed nostalgic, searching out the easter eggs alone is worth the price of a rental, or even the price of the game once it hits bargain bins. Definitely not a $60 game, but at least worth a look.

Never really got why this game got so hyped up.

I watched some gameplay and it looked a bit generic to be honest. Not to mention the fact that Gearbox is known for releasing generic, uninspired games (read: Duke Nukem).
A single instance of rescuing the flaming wreckage of another studio and releasing it does not establish a pattern.

That said, Colonial Marines has a long series of problems. The core issue is simply that the game doesn't seem to have any idea what kind of game it wants to be. It pretends to frenetic action, likely a grab of that Call of Duty money and while that is certainly a viable route to take the game simply does not have that absolute perfection of narrow mechanical set to make it work. Firing a weapon isn't terribly satisfying; indeed, firing a pulse rifle at an Alien barely seems to register until it keels over dead. And while one might attribute that to their alien physiology, that human enemies will happily absorb a burst of a half dozen rounds designed to penetrate their fancy body armor before having any reaction. If one wants to build the game around the left-trigger, right-trigger concept, there is much to be said about making that pull of the right trigger do something satisfying.

At other moments the game seems to really want to play the horror angle. Rather than simply gun down hoards of aliens, the game simply places a handful in the area that are seemingly faster, more aggressive, more durable, and more lethal than their fodder cousins. In these moments, the game actually shines even on a cooperative front.

But, seemingly in an effort to enforce a negative opinion, the game then commits egregious sins. It forces stealth sequences with, in many cases, instant fail mechanics. While such a sequence might be useful for building tension, the game manages to make it simply tedious as it simply becomes a game of red light, green light.

And, even from a narrative front there are problems. In one example, I encountered an alien and the game cut to black. In spite of being in the company of a half dozen other marines, in the next sequence I found I had been captured and cocooned. While it may be possible that I suffered a minor stroke, there was no explanation how I jumped from moment to moment. Such narrative leaps happen more than once and the only explanation I can conjure is that a segment was unceremoniously cut. When the game has little else to lean on, introducing these plot holes all but ensures that few will manage to find any enjoyment.

Still, if there were a single problem to point to, it is the Human opponents. While it is all terribly fun to assume WY is a menace to the world (and fairly well justified all told from what we know from the core movies), there is absolutely zero possible explanation for the PMC's actions. I'll spoiler tag the next section as it does involve plot discussion:

That WY wants to cover up their actions is perfectly understandable. But considering that the cover-up is being conducted by people, presumably with a working brain between their ears, one must question just how they hope the whole event will play out. They engage in pitched firefights with the Marines while Xeno's overrun everything. They open fire using the Sulaco's weapons while positioned perhaps 60 yards away which eventually results in the apparent destruction of both vessels. At every turn the human troops express the survival instincts of bacon. The marines have trouble putting the good of humanity before their own lives. The WY troops appear to have no such dilemma placing the interests of a company that is every inch a comic book level villain (complete with mustache twirling) before their own lives
.

I wanted to like the game. I wanted to like it enough that I managed to actually have some amount of fun playing it. There is some enjoyment to be wrung from this husk. But I can't for a moment suggest you pay 60 dollars for the privilege. There are plenty of similarly priced games that do every single thing better and don't ask you to wring before they offer fun.

I need a video review before I give my opinion. If its anywhere as awesome as the previous AvP game was, I'll love it.

What? I love the aliens universe.

And that 'review' was really, really brief. I could type that in like 2 minutes. *hint do video reviews hint*

It actually isn't anywhere near as awesome. AvP had a handful of questionable design choices that in many cases undermined people's opinions of the game. Colonial Marines has a handful of good ideas bound together by bad choices.

Not saying you won't enjoy it at all. You'll just have to really dig.

For example, as a huge fan of Aliens, I was delighted getting to finally explore key locations from the film; some of them are faithfully recreated. When the door to Hadley's Hope opens for example, you're treated to a near perfect remake of the scene from the film.

Possibly. There are segments that really turn the nostalgia knobs especially once you reach planetside and there are plenty of call backs to the film. The game is is a functional shooter that, from time to time, actually manages to entertain through mechanics but mostly ends up being little more than tedious. Without the desire to consume all things Aliens, I don't think you'd actually want to struggle through all the boring bits.

Everyone's ragging on about the campaign but how is the multiplayer? And yes, I know about the AvP games but in AvP2, multiplayer wise, the predator is overpowered and the first one is just too old.

The 1999 version of AvP had the most egregious example of unbalanced gameplay I've ever seen in a game. Every weapon the predator had could kill a marine in a single shot. Of those, two were auto aimed and one couldn't actually be dodged in most circumstances (the Disc). Combine that with fact that no weapon a Marine could muster could claim the same level of power and it gets really scary. That marines also had to either decide to use a single type of weapon or rely on simply collecting them around the level was just a nail in the coffin.

In all the time I played (dozens of games) I only managed to get two kills against a predator. The first had a predator following me through complex terrain as I hit him with grenade after grenade (it took about a half dozen hits from the weapon). The second required a few dozen smart gun rounds, six proximity detonated grenades, a 30 round burst from my Pulse Rifle and a final killing shot from the grenade launcher attachment to actually kill him.

Still, in answer to your question, I've yet to delve into the multiplayer offering. Balance has always been the franchises weak link however so I'm not particularly optimistic.

If so, remain calm: It's apparently quite a natural reaction to this game.

What makes the Alien franchise great for the silver screen is the emotional personal struggle of Ripley, and while the massive firefights are a nice backdrop, putting the carnage front and center - such as in Aliens: Colonial Marines - is not as compelling as you might want to believe.
The only problem with that it's that we already know that it can be compelling. AvP and especially AvP2 managed it very successfully. Clearly there's nothing inherent in the franchise that makes it unable to translate to an action/horror game, it's simply that recent attempts to do so have sucked.

seems about right for a predator, they just needed a marines vs predator mode one pred vs your squad to balance it.and that actually sounds like fun mp mode. do one for the alien also while we are at it.

Ok, the derelict spaceship could have been way, way away for all we know, but otherwise everywhere else on the planet they went to...um...no.
That was supposed to get explained why Hardleys Hope isn't a smoking crater. Not sure if they did as I still have to play the game myself...

The multiplayer is a lot of fun, though, so as long as you're fine with the game COMPLETELY BETRAYING CANON, you'll have a fun enough time.
That statement has been true for me and my friends.
I and my social circle bought this game for the coop and multi, and we have been LOVING this game.

Like seriously, we played it in isolation from reviews and the general net opinion (though a glance at steam forums showing page after page of "worst game of 2013?" style topic titles clued me in), and we really enjoyed the game and did not regret our purchase.

If anything our own complaints were campaign was too short and ends on a cliffhanger which is dlc bait and when playing coop campaign you can only play 1 out of 4 predetermined marines rather then playing the one you made for multiplayer.

We weren't really bothered with the "cannon breaking" moment in the game, but admittedly im the only one of my friends who has dipped his toe in the aliens extended universe and frankly.... There are much siller things in there, so this games controversial moment got a shrug of indifference as being unnecessary, but no worst then some of the stupider stuff from the extended universe.

So yeh me and my friends enjoying this game and well... Lets just say we have been a bit taken aback by the general hate.
Heck we've even had people joinning our multi games not to play, the guys character would just stand there, and he would spend entire game spamming in chat about how much he hates the game, its a betrayal to the franchise and bladiblada.
Oh well, guess will be adding this to my list of controversial gaming opinions.

You know, this is one of the few games I'm interested in that I genuinely couldn't give less of a shit about having good single player. I wasn't looking forward to this game because I thought I would be getting an engaging narrative experience, I was looking forward to it because the older games in the franchise had some of the most entertaining multiplayer I've ever played.

I'll wait for a PC-specific review before I decide to buy or not, but it sounds to me like the multiplayer aspect is everything I was hoping for, so bugger Metacritic, and bugger disappointed fanbois of the films.

I'm sorta at a loss for words, I know devs touch up screen shots sometimes with antialiasing (gears of war did this plenty) but this is all kinds of bullshit.

3 Stars? Huh, this is the most positive review I've seen so far. Everyone else is setting fire to the thing. I'm disappointed myself, I was hoping this would be a great game, but I guess not.
In some ways, a 3 star rating is its own punishment. I know the Escapist sees 3 stars as being better than most reviewers, but 3 stars tends to imply an utterly mediocre, insipid, boilerplate, painfully average game. A bland average game is probably worse than a game that's so bad you can end up laughing at it, or a game you outright hatr. In the former case it becomes fun again, and in the latter case you can easily stop playing. If something is unobtrusively average though, it not only takes more of your life away, but it also leaves you feeling unfulfilled.

im skipping this.
What the fck happened in the dev cycle?

combined with the mind jarring declaration that more levels woudl break consoles in BL2, Gearbox seriously has voided its good will budget with this turd.

AVP from a decade ago felt more like aliens that this thing.

Hicks survived and appears in game, even joins your squad at one point. Sadly, he isnt even that interesting in the game, hudson would have been more fun if they truly wanted to bring back a supposedly dead character xP Also when you ask him whose body is it that is went with ripley and newt he simply says "its a long story" as convenient way of not explaining :p

The fact that you can level up in the single-player campaign is the only thing that catches my eye about this game. I don't know much about the Aliens movies (and have fallen asleep during two of them) but I'm willing to give this game a try

The single-player is really short. You unlock stuff as you go, but it's not spectacular. It's mainly used for multiplayer. I wouldn't recommend you go out and pay $60 for it if that's your main draw..

thanks for the info. sounds awful and pointless.

OT: I'll probably wait until this is on sale on Steam, I'm not a big multi-player fan and the solo doesn't seem worth the price tag

I played through it all last night and enjoyed it for the most part. It was way buggy and needed 3 months more dev time but I bet it was pushed out etc.

At no point was the game ruined though. The story was predictable and in places silly but it was an action movie story so I took it with a pinch of salt.

The cameo character was a poor choice and they explained it away poorly.

So yes it had deep flaws but I had a decent amount of fun with it, wouldn't say it was worth full price but defo a reduced price.

The voices and sounds and atmos where decent enough, the guns were fun enough, The missions were pretty cool, graphics weren't that bad but were sloppy in places.

overall though I think I'll play it again and try the MP out etc, defo not the worst game I have bought. That was probably Wet.

3 out of 5 stars suggests that this game is average. That this is an acceptable, average, release worth being on the shelves - neither terribly good or terribly bad. And that is absolutely wrong. This is not an average game. In an average game the AI enemies would function, at all. In an average game the AI squad mates would function, at all. There are times when you're fighting xenomorphs that your squadmates will literally STAND THERE DOING NOTHING. Sometimes your squad mates will block off a path, THE ONLY PATH, to where you need to go and WILL NOT MOVE. The aliens have no AI other than rush head on at you, if, and I mean IF, their AI functions at all. I've had hordes of Xenomorphs just standing there while I walk by, and other stuck in the terrain unable to move at all.

The large assortment of weapons would be a plus, if any of them outside of a very few were actually worthwhile. The smartgun is something all of us wanted to use and you end up using it for the barest miniscule amount of time possible.

The graphics go between decently impressive, usually the background, to little bits of black and alien sludge that have terrible modeling and texturing - all the way to black holes in the terrain that aliens pop out of that have NO TEXTURING OR DEPTH AT ALL.

Crashes. A multitude of glitches too numerous to properly recount. Terribly character models, bad texturing, faces on your squadmates that look like plastic dolls virtually no lipsyncing in a game that comes YEARS and YEARS after Half Life 2 got lipsyncing right, and had facial expression that were actually Human. The gameplay could have been saved with several months more of development time, in theory, but after the development hell that produced this nonsense I highly doubt it.

We were lied to. The promised features, the supposed "demos" the shown graphical complexity and more were all shown and promised to us . . . and a great mass of them are not here, at all. Not just in lesser forms, but in many cases these things are outright NOT IN THE FINAL GAME AT ALL. When you show a several minute long demo of a game that has visual complexity not in the final release, enemy AI that is not in the final release, squadmate interactions and character building that are not in the final release and more . . . then there is no other conclusion than what was shown to us was a lie.

This waste of time and money doesn't even deserve one star. Let alone three. It's an outrage, and every person that was sad and sorry enough to pay for this fecal matter should be reimbursed, especially if it kills the studio that thought this was an acceptable release.
