Here's a quick and easy test to see if you are a dick or not. (Wish I could put it into Flowchart form)

STEP 1. Check if there are any short curly hairs on your feet, if yes, go to 2. If no, you are not a dick
STEP 2. Check if your head secrets a clear or white liquid, If yes then proceed to step 3. If no, you are not a dick.
STEP 3. Check to see if you grow bigger if you rub your mid section If yes, you are a dick, If no, you are not a dick, but should probably see a doctor about the whole head thing.
Two out of three means I'm clear, right?

I don't forward these texts, and the people I love haven't died yet. (YET- my dad is going in for surgery this Friday.) I ignore all the ones that say, "If you don't forward this, then you don't love God." God loves ALL his children. (my family is religious, lol.) Those text messages are fake, but I do know of one about a missing child awhile back. His picture was in a magazine of mugshots & he was missing for awhile.

So some texts might be real, & most are fake. Absolutely NO MONEY from your bill goes toward ANY foundation if you forward it unless it's a government-sponsored organization, like they did with Haiti. So don't feel guilty about not forwarding that text, and no, you aren't a dick, cuz then I'm one too (though I'm a girl...) xD
Yea, but I definetely have this one pegged as fake. But thanks for siding with me.
(Also, hope all goes well with your father.)

Thanks for not sugar-coating it.

Whoever sent the chain mail was a dick and you should murder them in their sleep.
I'm gonna get right on that.

Absolutely not. If someone sends me a text message, expect a response, and if its not what you want, too fucking bad.

Regardless of what the text deals with, I don't think you're a dick. I personally would have just said No, and why are you sending me these texts?

A fellow classmate died in my grade. I never really knew this girl, and nor did I particularly care for her. When she passed away, the school tried to sell patches for 10 dollars a pop. If it was like, a dollar or something, I would've done it, but 10 dollars? The family wasn't even accepting the money so where the fuck was that going to? I didn't buy one, does that make me a dick?

No, no it doesn't.
I love you Mr. Pandah.
you're welcome & thanks.

Everyone using the term Chain Mail makes me think of the blasted armor.
Anyway, I think what you did is entirely reasonable and I do the exact same with these scams. I mean, if I was going to ask for money for a child with a disease, the LAST medium I would use is a chain letter.

Yes. Because of you, a six-month child is dead. You could have saved her just by forwarding that email, and the healing properties of spam would have shrunk the tumours down to an easily operable size. No wait, she'd have just passed them out her next nappy.

You're a monster.

No, you're a dick for replying to a chain letter. Most of us got that down back in the AOL days.
Have you just come of internet-age, sir?

People need help with Cancer? START A CHAIN LETTER. Excellent way of spreading the word. But please, don't donate to them in any way, it might seem like you are helping them. We can't have that.

Not responding to a chain-letter is not a sign of being a dick, but of having a clue about how the internet works. Just like skepticism towards requests from Nigerian royalty.
Well of course the Nigerian royalty ones are fake. I just got a request to help Armenian royalty, though, and I'm pretty sure it's legit.

OT: People have already said it, but repetition is a great study aid: chain letters are a waste of time that are either for laughs or scams.

Wait. You mean my mother won't die in a fire because I tear up this chain letter?

No, the text is very tactless and pretty awful in itself. Seriously, cancer isn?t that uncommon. A receiver might actually know or have known someone else who did have cancer.

If they wanted to raise money there are better ways than trying to create a piece of chainmail. I mean come one, there are few things in life that give of such an air of insincerity the way a piece of chainmail does. I?m sitting here doubting the existence of this young child with cancer; you don?t want that if they actually trying to raise money for something like this.

Your friend is an idiot for believing chain mail. I hope he didn't give anyone his bank details.
If they wanted money, they'd probably make an online or televised appeal, not asking people for dosh over text.

I've died 476 times thanks to not passing on chain mail, it gets quite boring.

Yeah, my mother has an email account, and I pretty much deal with it for her, she doesn't get ones like that, but she does get about a dozen of the similar ones about how if you're a true friend you'll pass this 'flower' on to grow on the power of friendship..yadda yadda whatever.

I of course don't want to act on her behalf by replying and saying 'can you quit forwarding this shit, we are all friends, but this crap doesn't help anyone, and no-one's ever found their true love by sending it to a hundred people.' but I do delete em all, so that when she gets around to logging in once a month there'll only be 5 relevant messages instead of 50 pointless ones.

I watched QI and they estimated that 99% of the internet is not in fact porn but spam, and if we all educated all the other users we know about stupid stuff to ignore, we could probably drop that figure a fair way, because it wouldn't be getting forwarded by well meaning but essentially foolish people.

so in future, just don't rise to it, I wouldn't say you're a dick tho, but just ignore and delete in future.

If you want to help, find a registered charity and donate, don't just give your bank details to the first yahoo that emails you saying they're dying.

She won't, but my mother will. Do you want that on your conscience? I accept mastercard and paypal. No donations under $20.

To the original.. I guess you already know it, but no, you're not being a dick. Not succumbing to emotional blackmail is hardly being a dick. I think it's even perfectly reasonable to lash back at people who try to guilt you into shit, so sending a reply was pretty much justified in my books.

Then again, my moral compass has always had troubles pointing north, so maybe I'm not the perfect authority on this one.

Definitely shouldn't have responded, let alone with the tone you used.

That's the only real problem I see here...
